1 Lake-Sumter State College Course Syllabus Course / Prefix HIM1211 Course Title: Basic Health Information Technology Number CRN: 681 Credit: 1 Term: Fall 201 This course introduces the student to the role of health information and technology in all healthcare settings and in the continuity of patient care. The course provides an overview of accreditation, regulation and HIPAA requirements in healthcare. Fundamentals of Information Course Catalog Systems and Electronic Health Records are presented. Healthcare code sets, transactions and Description: billing systems are also introduced. Subsequent courses in the health information technology program develop these concepts to mastery level as assessed in the professional practice experiences and the capstone health information technician review course. The Lake-Sumter State College website, Blackboard, Blackboard Collaborate Web conferencing utility, Microsoft Word, a high-speed internet connection, and access to the textbook companion website is required to attend the course. Visit and select Browser Check to ensure that your system is ready for use. It is the students responsibility to have an alternative plan if their main computer system fails. Computers are available in LSSC s Libraries and Learning Centers on each campus. You may need to arrange your schedule to be able to use on-campus computers to complete your assignments. By the end of the first week of the term, the instructor will assume students are well acquainted with the Blackboard environment and have become proficient at the following: Navigating course content in Blackboard; Attaching documents; Creating discussion postings; 1

2 Submitting assignments; Browsing the Internet; Creating and formatting documents in Microsoft Word. Course Objectives: (what the course will do) Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Assessed in this Course: (what the students take with them beyond this course) Academic Integrity: By the second week of the term, all students should have resolved all technical issues with the LSSC Helpdesk and should be ready to fulfill the requirements of the course. This course is designed to help the student succeed in subsequent technical courses by providing an introduction to those health information management and technology concepts that will be developed throughout the HIT and medical office programs. After the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Use technology, including hardware and software, to ensure data collection, storage, analysis, and reporting of information. (HIM ) Use common software applications such as spreadsheets, databases, word processing, graphics, presentation, , and so on in the execution of work processes. (HIM ) Explain how networks work (HIM ) Explain the process of obtaining and EHR including evaluation of functions (HIM ) Apply policies and procedures to facilitate the electronic health record (EHR) Participate in the planning, design, selection, implementation, integration, testing, evaluation, and support for EHRs. (Introduced- only) Apply confidentiality and security measures to protect electronic health information. Define the HIPAA requirements for compliance with systems security rules (HIM ) Protect data integrity and validity using software or hardware technology Apply departmental and organizational data and information system security policies and describe the methods of cyber security (HIM ) The successful functioning of the academic community demands honesty, which is the basis of respect for both ideas and persons. 3 Attendance / Withdrawal Policies: This is a fully online course; therefore, students are not required to meet on campus. The Final Exam is proctored; students must make arrangements with the LSSC Learning Center to schedule a time to take the Final Exam. Students will not be dropped from the class for lack of participation but are expected to withdraw by the deadline listed below or receive a grade of F.
