4 BOMB THREAT If yu receive a bmb threat by telephne, try t remain calm and btain as much infrmatin as pssible frm the caller. Recrd the time f call, sex f caller, phne number (if caller ID present). What did the caller say? Ask: When is it ging t explde? Where is the bmb? What des it lk like? What kind f bmb is it? What will cause it t explde? Did yu place the bmb? Why? What is yur name and address? Write dwn infrmatin abut the caller: Man r a wman? Apprximate age? Unusual speech traits? Tne f vice and attitude? Freign r reginal accent? Dictin? Backgrund nise? If the threat was delivered r left in yur area, try t recall a descriptin f the deliverer r any suspicius persn(s) in the area. Immediately ntify Crnell Plice by calling 911, using a Blue Light Phne, r dialing (607) frm a cell phne. Reprt the time, lcatin and cntent f the threat, as well as yur lcatin and phne number. Stay n the line with the 911 dispatcher until the 911 dispatcher terminates the phne call. Take n ther actin unless directed by Crnell Plice. D nt create a panic situatin. 5 BUILDING EVACUATION Evacuatin is required: any time the fire alarm sunds, r an evacuatin annuncement is made, r a university fficial rders yu t evacuate. In the event f an evacuatin: Alert thse arund yu wh might nt have heard. Turn ff equipment and secure hazardus peratins if pssible. Take yur keys, jackets, and any persnal items with yu, yu may nt have access t them fr hurs r lnger. Clse drs and windws. Leave rm lights n. Remain calm and walk t nearest exit. D NOT use elevatrs. If yu are unable t leave the building due t a physical disability: G t the nearest area where there are n hazards. Use a telephne t call 911 r Crnell Plice at (607) Be sure t give them the rm number s they can send help t yu. If pssible, signal ut the windw t n site emergency respnders. One persn may remain with yu if they wish t assist yu. D nt re enter until given an all clear signal by emergency persnnel. CRIME Call 911 t reprt a crime in prgress r criminal behavir t Crnell Plice. D nt apprach r attempt t apprehend the persn(s) invlved. Take nly actins necessary fr self defense. If yu are safe, stay where yu are until the plice arrive. Otherwise, try t mve t a safe lcatin. Reprt as much infrmatin as pssible including: Type f crime. 6 EARTHQUAKE Earthquakes are rare in the Ithaca area but knwing what t d culd save yur life. DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON Minimize yur mvements t a few steps t a nearby safe place and if yu are indrs, stay there until the shaking has stpped and yu are sure exiting is safe. If Indrs If Outdrs DROP t the grund; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table r ther piece f furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stps. If there isn t a table r desk near yu, cver yur face and head with yur arms and cruch in an inside crner f the building. Stay away frm glass, windws, utside drs and walls, and anything that culd fall, such as lighting fixtures r furniture. Stay in bed if yu are there when the earthquake strikes. Hld n and prtect yur head with a pillw, unless yu are under a heavy light fixture that culd fall. In that case, mve t the nearest safe place. D nt use a drway except if yu knw it is a strngly supprted, lad bearing drway and it is clse t yu. Many inside drways are lightly cnstructed and d nt ffer prtectin. Stay inside until the shaking stps and it is safe t g utside. D nt exit a building during the shaking. Be aware that the electricity may g ut r the sprinkler systems r fire alarms may turn n. Stay there. Mve away frm buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. Once in the pen, stay there until the shaking stps. The greatest danger exists directly utside buildings, at exits and alngside exterir walls. Wait fr trained persnnel t assist yu frm the elevatr. If yu hear smene calling fr help frm a stalled elevatr car: Call Crnell Plice at (607) r use a building emergency phne. 8 FIRE, SMOKE, EXPLOSION In the event f fire, smke, r an explsin: Alert thse arund yu t the hazard. Evacuate the rm, clsing drs behind yu as yu leave. Manually activate the fire alarm system as yu exit the building. Exit and mve away frm the building DO NOT USE ELEVATORS. If yu encunter smke, stay lw and if necessary use yur secndary escape rute. Call 911 (r (607) frm a cell phne) frm a safe lcatin. Tell the dispatcher: Name f the building Lcatin f the fire Descriptin f the fire ALL fires must be reprted t Crnell Plice, including thse that have been extinguished. If yur clthing is n fire Stp Drp t the grund r flr and Rll t smther flames. Smther flames using a fire blanket. Drench with water frm a safety shwer r ther surce. Seek medical attentin fr all burns and injuries. If yu are trapped in a building If pssible, take shelter in a rm with an utside windw. Clse all drs and windws. Fire Extinguishers If yu have been trained and it is safe t d s, yu may use ne extinguisher t attempt t extinguish the fire. Only attempt t extinguish small fires. 9 HAZARDOUS MATERIALS EMERGENCIES Fr spills r incidents requiring training, prcedures, r persnal prtective equipment beynd the abilities f the persnnel present, take the fllwing actins: Alert thers in the immediate area and evacuate the rm. If building evacuatin is needed then manually activate the building fire alarm. Clse drs as yu leave the rm. Call 911 (r (607) frm cell phnes) frm a safe lcatin and prvide the fllwing infrmatin: Yur name, telephne number, and lcatin Lcatin f the spill Name and quantity f material spilled (if knwn) Any injuries r persnal cntaminatin Use eyewash r safety shwers as needed t wash spilled chemicals ff yur bdy. Flush the affected areas with cpius amunts f water fr at least 15 minutes. Call 911 t reprt hazardus materials spills and persnal cntaminatin. If yu are cntaminated d nt spread the material r cntaminate thers. Tell respnders yu have the material n yu. MEDICAL OR MENTAL HEALTH EMERGENCY A medical emergency may exist fr many reasns including trauma, alchl r ther drug verdse, serius mental health issues, r medical cnditins like diabetes r cardiac arrest. Call 911 D nt mve the persn unless they are in immediate danger. Prvide first aid if yu are trained t d s. Reassure the persn that help is n the way. Students (r anyne cncerned abut a student): Cnsultatin regarding medical and mental health cncerns is available by phne at all times. Call the Faculty and Staff Assistance Prgram (FSAP) at (607) If yu are immediately cncerned that smene may harm themselves r thers, call the Crnell Plice at (607) HEART ATTACK Knw the signs and symptms f a pssible heart attack Chest discmfrt: Mst heart attacks invlve discmfrt in the center f the chest that lasts mre than a few minutes, r that ges away and cmes back. It can feel like uncmfrtable pressure, squeezing, fullness r pain. Discmfrt in ther areas f the upper bdy. Symptms can include pain r discmfrt in ne r bth arms, the back, neck, jaw r stmach. 12 WORKPLACE VIOLENCE Yur actins may help calm a ptentially vilent situatin, r they may escalate the prblem. Behave in a manner that helps calm a situatin. Stay calm and dn t be in a hurry. Be empathetic. Shw yu are cncerned. Try t have the persn and yu sit dwn; sitting is a less aggressive psitin. Try t be helpful, fr example, schedule an appintment fr a later time.
