Keep yurself and thers calm. Quickly prceed utside the building t the annunced safe lcatin using the planned evacuatin rute. Clse drs as yu leave. Instructrs will take the Attendance Sheet/Bk fr crrect head cunt. Reprt immediately t the designated safe area lcated either at the treed island in the frnt parking lt r the dumpster enclsure in the parking lt. Check with Vice President/Campus Directr wh will take a head cunt frm the instructrs. Wait fr instructins frm emergency respnse persnnel. D nt re-enter the building until tld it is safe t d s.

4 4 P a g e Safe Area Lcatin The safe area fr the staff and students is designated as the parking lt island cntaining the small trees tward the frnt f the Cmfrt Inn in the frnt parking lt and/r the dumpster enclsure area at end f the parking lt area at the back f the campus clse t rear f the Shepherd State University building. This will prvide rm fr emergency vehicles in the frnt f the campus and back f the campus. Planned Evacuatin Rute Faculty and students will fllw a planned evacuatin rute when exiting the building. That rute will be frm the frnt classrm exit r frm the inner class rm and lab areas thrugh the hallway and ut the frnt main entrance dr bearing t the left t the treed island in the frnt parking area. If that escape rute is blcked by fire, students and faculty will exit thrugh the hallway r CNA lab and ut the back dr behind the CNA lab turning t the left and prceeding t the end f the parking area near the dumpster enclsure. Students in the rear sectin f the building will exit ut the rear dr between the HVAC cmputer Lab n the right and the Medical class rm n the left, turning t the left and prceeding t the end f the parking area near the dumpster enclsure. ALL EVACUATION ROUTES ARE CLEARLY POSTED AND MARKED BY EXIT SIGNS THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. Building Safety Systems The schl building lcated at 287 Aikens Center and has the fllwing safety systems: Alarms: Fire alarms are lcated thrughut the building. Smke Detectrs: Smke detectrs are lcated thrughut the building. Fire Extinguishers: Fire extinguishers are lcated in varius lcatins thrughut the building and in the HVAC lab. First Aid Kits: First aid kits are available in the administrative ffice area and in the HVAC lab.

5 5 P a g e Evacuatin Persnnel The fllwing staff will serve as evacuatin persnnel. Emergency Annuncer: Carriss LaBelle, Evacuatin Warden r, Wesley Mackall, Alternate Warden Annuncer will annunce any disasters t all areas f the building. Evacuatin Warden: Carriss LaBelle Alternate Warden: Wesley Mackall Wardens will: Supervise evacuatin prcedure Check with searchers t get an all clear reprt r find ut any prblems. Reprt t the Cmmand Center if areas were unsearched due t lack f persnnel. Ensure that all peple frm the area prceed t the designated meeting place t check in and wait fr all clear which will cme frm the Cmmand Center. Reprt any prblems t the Cmmand Center. The Cmmand Center will be the Fire Department. Searcher: Martin Easley Searcher: Jeremy Miley Searchers will: Check all rms including restrms, cnference rms, and remte areas, clsing all drs behind them. They will advise remaining emplyees r ther persns n the flr abut the emergency and the requirement t evacuate. When the area is clear they will prceed ut f the building. Date f Last Evacuatin Drill The last evacuatin drill at the Martinsburg Campus f Valley Cllege was held n The next evacuatin drill is scheduled fr

6 6 P a g e Fire Emergency Plan If yu discver fire r see smke d nt panic. Call 911 and prceed with the fllwing: RACE Remve/Relcate individuals away frm danger; if pssible withut endangering yur safety. Activate Alarm: Call 911 Cnfine/Cntain fire and smke by clsing drs and windws. Extinguish fire nly if trained and fire is small by using the nearest fire extinguisher. Fllw Instructins fr the Building Evacuatin Plan Check drs with the back f yur hand t ensure it is cl befre pening. Walk quickly D Nt Run ut f the building t the designated safe place. Instructrs shuld lead students t the designated safe area at the frnt r rear f the building. Instructrs shuld take the Attendance Sheet/Bk with them. Instructrs shuld take attendance nce at the safe area and reprt t the Evacuatin Warden. D Nt Re-Enter the Building until the ALL CLEAR is issued by the FIRE DEPARTMENT

7 7 P a g e Severe Weather Plan Severe weather includes trnads, severe thunderstrms, vilent snw strms, and flding. Trnads/Severe Thunderstrm Watch: If a trnad r severe thunderstrm watch has been issued in an area that includes the campus: Mnitr lcal emergency alert weather statins r the Natinal Weather Service. Faulty and staff shuld be alerted t infrm students f building s safe areas and be ready t relcate t thse areas in case the Watch is upgraded t a Warning. Definitin f a Watch: A severe thunderstrm r trnad watch is issued by the Natinal Weather Service when the weather cnditins are such that a severe thunderstrm, a trnad, r bth, are mre likely t develp and yu shuld be prepared t mve t a designated safe area. Definitin f a Warning: A severe thunderstrm r trnad warning is issued by the Natinal Weather Service when a thunderstrm r trnad has been sighted r indicated by weather radar. At this pint the danger is very serius and yu shuld mve t a designated safe area. If a trnad r a severe thunderstrm WARNING has been issued in the area that includes the campus: Mve students and staff t safe areas IMMEDIATELY. Clse classrm, labratry, and ffice drs. Instructrs shuld take the attendance sheet/bk t the safe areas with them. Remain in safe area until warning expires r until the all clear has been issued. Schl Clsings and delays will be decided by the Executive Directr and Campus Directrs. Annuncements f such will be made n Face Bk, n/thrugh Prtal, n WHAG televisin statin, and thrugh SMS texting. A phne tree has been established if calls need t be made t staff in emergency situatins. Carriss LaBelle/Pam Divel will call r text the admissins reps, financial aid reps and Online staff. Carriss LaBelle/Pam Divel will call/text the instructrs and Faculty Aid, the Directr f First Impressins, Placement Directr, and Placement Advisr.

8 8 P a g e Safe Area Lcatin The classrms, cmputer labs, file rm and interir staff ffices, with the exceptin f the ffices f the Campus Directr, are the safe areas fr bth students and staff since these rms, labs and ffices d nt have windws. The receptin area, and all staff ffices and the MCA cmputer lab at the very frnt f the building are nt t be used because f the number f windws and class drs in thse areas. Interir crprate ffices and rms are safe areas fr crprate persnnel with the exceptin f the Vice President s and President s ffice, Michelle s ffice and the frnt entry and rear kitchen area because f the windws and glass drs lcated in thse areas. Hstage/Intruder Situatin Plan If an intruder enters a classrm r enclsed area with a weapn and threatens t sht r injure persns the fllwing guidelines shuld be fllwed: Respnsibilities: Campus Directr/Designee Immediately ntify plice (911) Initiate Actin Secure Building Lck dwn building and d nt let any students that are nt in class enter the building. Alert all rms f the event. Instructrs will lck classrm drs. If the Vice President/Campus Directr is nt present, ntify the Vice President/Campus Directr f the situatin. Mnitr hstage situatin the best yu can withut ding anything t exacerbate it. Fllw instructins f law enfrcement fficials wh will take ver when they arrive n site. Staff Remain calm. Talk with the individual in a lw-key, nn-threatening manner. D nt argue with r antagnize the individual in any way. Keep yur distance. Give the intruder ample persnal space. D nt attempt t deceive r threaten the intruder. D nt buy int the delusins f the intruder. Suggest marching the students r staff quietly ut the back dr. Back ff if this apprach angers the intruder. Be cnstantly alert and prepared fr vilence. Initiate Actin Duck, Cver and Hld if the intruder pens fire. DUCK dwn and take COVER under a sturdy desk r table and HOLD this psitin until the all clear is given. Nte: If the schl becmes invlved in a hstage situatin the primary cncern must be the safety f the students, staff, and faculty. Individuals wh take hstages are frequently emtinally disturbed and the key t dealing with them is t make every attempt t AVOID antagnizing them. Cmmunicatin must be handled in a nn-jking manner; always remembering that it may take very little t cause such persns t becme vilent.

9 9 P a g e Vice President/Campus Directr/Designee Infrm staff supervising students in the classrm t initiate Actin Duck, Cver & Hld. Immediately ntify plice by calling 911. If the Vice President/Campus Directr is nt present, ntify the Vice President/Campus Directr f the situatin. Wrk in crdinatin with supervisrs f law enfrcement until the situatin is reslved. Initiate student release prcedures and r evacuatin prcedures nly if it becmes necessary. Staff In classrms, maintain Actin Duck, Cver & Hld until the situatin is reslved. In pen areas, mve the students t safer areas as quickly as pssible. Only in extreme cases shuld it becme necessary t initiate Actin Duck, Cver & Hld. This shuld be dne nly when there is n chance fr the students t reach safer areas.
