2 Dr. Oscar Miller ( ) was one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the Southeast. He and his mentor, Dr. Michael Hoke, opened the first Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children - beginning the Shriners Hospital movement throughout the world. In 1921, Dr. Miller became the Director/Surgeon-in- Chief of the N.C. Orthopaedic Hospital in Gastonia. He established the Miller Orthopaedic Clinic in 1923 (which later merged with Charlotte Orthopedic Specialists to become OrthoCarolina). He served as the 10th President of AAOS and was instrumental in starting Instructional Course Lectures. He also developed the Miller Flatfoot Procedure. Dr. Miller was one of 10 doctors who founded Charlotte Memorial Hospital (currently known as Carolinas Medical Center) and their orthopedic residency program. 5 Target Audience: Orthopedic surgeons, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals involved in the treatment of orthopedic patients. Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: Identify, understand and manage common foot and ankle problems (i.e. plantar fasciitis) Evaluate and treat common foot and ankle injuries in the athletic population (i.e. Achilles ruptures, ankle instability) Compare and contrast the role and indications of biologics (i.e. BMP, amniotic tissue) in foot and ankle surgery Learn how to diagnose, manage, and treat Charcot arthropathy Accreditation Statements: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the North Carolina Medical Society through the joint sponsorship of The Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence (CCME) and the OrthoCarolina Research Institute. CCME is accredited by the NCMS to provide continuing medical education for physicians. On I-77, take exit 9B for the John Belk Freeway/I-277 North/East. Follow North until exit 1E. Follow the street signs for Caldwell Street. From Caldwell, turn right onto Stonewall Street. The next traffic light is McDowell Street. Turn left onto McDowell Street. Go through the Second Street intersection and turn right into the Sheraton Charlotte Hotel s third driveway.
