3 Principal s Welcome New Ross Vocational College of Further Education has been consistently meeting the educational needs of students and adult learners in the New Ross area for over forty years. From small beginnings in the Adult Education Department in Michael Street in the 1970 s, the college has expanded its Further Education programme to meet the challenges that the current economic climate has presented. The college has always had solid links with local businesses and industries through our work experience programmes, which provide valuable employment opportunities and experiences for our students. By gaining the relevant qualifications, students have been introduced to a range of employment opportunities in the areas of Information Technology, Office Administration, Childcare and Horticulture. With excellent facilities available, including up to date computer rooms, laboratories, workshops, horticulture tunnel and a green house, many of our adult learners have achieved qualifications in FETAC and ECDL and have used these qualifications to progress to third level education in Universities and Institutes of Technology. Many of our students progress to employment in Work placements related to their courses. Each year we review and modify our course structure to reflect the needs of our local population and the challenges of the current economic climate, with new modules added when the demand presents itself. Our commitment to excellence in education has enabled us to deliver the highest standards of teaching and learning in a caring, supportive and professional atmosphere. We offer flexibility in all our programmes, with full time and part time courses designed to cater for the needs of our student body. I hope that you find your time here in New Ross Vocational College of Further Education enjoyable and productive, and wish you all the best for your future career. Suzanne Barrett, Principal. page 2

6 FETAC FETAC was set up as a statutory body in June 2001 by the Minister for Education and Science under the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act As the national awarding body for Further Education and Training in Ireland, the Further Education and Training Awards Council gives you the opportunity to gain recognition for learning in education or training centres, in the workplace and in the community. There are forty one higher education institutes including Universities, Institutes of Technology and private Third Level Colleges offering places on a variety of courses. Courses leading to FETAC Awards are made up of modules or components. For each module / component in which the required standard has been achieved a candidate gains credits or a Minor Award. To obtain a FETAC Major Award (formerly known as a full Certificate) certain numbers and combinations of modules / components must be successfully completed. Module Descriptors for each module are available from All of our courses lead to either a FETAC Major or Minor Award at Level 5. Major Awards This is the main type of award which represents a significant volume of learning. This is a combination of minor awards. Learners may accumulate the minor awards over time in order to achieve the major award. A Certificate will be awarded to all learners who successfully complete the major award requirements at Levels 1-5. Advanced Certificate will be awarded at Level 6. Minor Awards Minor Awards form part of a major award but are smaller than the major award. Achievement of the Minor Award provides recognition of learning that has relevance and value in it s own right. Note: FETAC is currently going through a transition period. Course content/availability may vary to reflect these changes. Useful Website: page 5
