KERRY Kerry Counselling Centre, D17 Edward Court, Edward Street, Tralee Tel: Foundation Course in Counselling A basic introduction to counselling suitable for carers, educators, parents and all who are interested in relating more positively to themselves and to others. Applicants must be over 25 years of age. Diploma in Counselling*. This course is scheduled to run in Please check with the Kerry Counselling Centre for details. The Centre also offers many workshops over the year which may be of interest. Please check with the Centre for details. OUTSIDE KERRY Cork Institute of Technology Bishopstown, Cork Tel: ; fax: ; website: Certificate in Counselling Skills One year, part-time (one evening per week, plus an additional evening per month, plus 10 Saturdays spread between October and May). This course aims to meet the needs of people who require an introductory training in counselling for use in their existing work. Additionally, the course aims to provide a foundational introduction in counselling for those students who wish to pursue further training in counselling. Applicants must be over 23 years of age at the date of registration. Application must be made by mid-august

2 Higher Certificate in Arts in Counselling Skills One year, part-time (two evenings per week plus weekend workshops). Offered to students who have successfully completed the Certificate (see above). The course aims to facilitate interested students to reach the level of training and development required to seek entry into the professional practitioner training programme in counselling which is offered in the BA, years 3 and 4. Applications must be made by mid-may. Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Counselling and Psychotherapy Two further years, part-time (two evenings per week, or some Saturdays, plus weekend workshops). A professional practitioner training course in counselling. Students will be required to carry out 100 hours of counselling work with clients during the training. The prospectus states that the BA is a fully validated professional counselling training programme which satisfies the training requirement of accrediting bodies; to obtain this accreditation a substantial period of supervised counselling practice will be required after completing the degree. The course consists of 9 weekend (Saturday and Sunday) workshops and one residential weekend. It also prepares people for entry into the Professional Diploma in Counselling. Diploma in Counselling* Three years part-time. The training groups meet monthly for residential weekends and extended workshops from September to June. Following the two years, students are generally ready to start their practice hours. They work with individual clients and attend supervision at the centre in Cork. 2

It is also of interest to those who would like to learn counselling skills to enhance their work practices e.g. human resources personnel, nurses, gardai and teachers. Furthermore, it would be of interest to practising counsellors and therapists who would like to complete a formal professionally recognised qualification counselling and psychotherapy. Two to four years, part-time. In years 1 and 2, teaching takes place on one evening a week for 12 weeks. During weeks 3 and 4 teaching takes place on one evening a week for 24 weeks and on 1 weekend a month for nine months. In addition, students attend Process Group Work on one evening a week for 30 weeks of each year. Additional hours are also required in years 3 and 4 for research workshops, client work, personal therapy and individual clinical supervision. Students who successfully complete year 2 and exit the programme, will receive a Higher Certificate in Arts. Galilee House of Studies Athy, Co. The course is intended for mature persons (minimum age 25 years) who are or who wish to become involved in the caring professions. The course provides systematic training in counselling theory and practice at a level that will prepare participants to counsel in a variety of settings and to use various counselling approaches. The course is of two years duration. The first year is full-time and residential from Monday to Thursday, from October to May. 3

Sc. in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy* Three-year part-time, runs over one weekend (Friday evenings, all day Saturday and Sunday) each month from September/October to May/June. Students who successfully complete the graduate diploma and meet certain criteria may continue to the MSc year 4. Candidates selected for interview will normally have a minimum of five years postgraduate experience, and have a degree or equivalent professional training in the medical or social sciences, humanities or related fields. There is also a provision for a number of mature students who do not fulfil the academic requirements. The graduate diploma is recognised by the European Association of Psychotherapy as having met their training requirements and prepares students for accreditation with the IACP. The three to four year training programme involves three five-day workshops and an intensive ten days each year. A training group meets with the trainers for a minimum of 130 hours each year. Outside the formal training programme each trainee is required to be in on-going personal therapy for at least an hour every two weeks. An individual must have completed the Personal Development Programme (one year) prior to being accepted onto the Diploma course, be at least 25 years of age, and have a basic understanding of psychology and psychotherapy. 5

Application is limited to mature students with an established interest in and commitment to counselling. Preference will ordinarily be given to applicants holding at the time of application the Certificate in Counselling Skills awarded by NUI Maynooth, or an equivalent qualification. 6

In other courses it works with other accrediting institutions including universities or other appropriate third level bodies in regard to validation and certification. All courses are October to May. Schedule for all Foundation and Degree Courses commencing October 2007 The full-time degree programme will commence in October 2007 in Limerick. The part-time degree programme is completed during the period from October through to the end of May. Courses are run based on a minimum of 15 students per class. Dats, reginal venurs and times will be finalised before commencement of courses, which normally begin on the 3 rd and 4 th week of October. Foundation courses are presented regionally and are on a part-time basis only. These courses will be run in various locations throughout the year. Details will be listed on the Foundation Courses web page. *Please phone for more up to date part time and on going courses in counselling NUI Maynooth (Department of Adult and Community Education) Maynooth, County Kildare Tel: Certificate in Counselling Skills Extract from the prospectus: seeks to meet the growing need that people are experiencing in their personal and professional lives for a course concerned with introducing them to the communication skills central to human relationships. Whereas the course may serve, in some instances, as an entry point to a variety of further education options, it does not aim to train people in the field of therapeutic counselling. Participants must be 23 years or over. The course is 100 hours over one academic year. It may consist of 25 x 3-hour sessions together with 4 Saturdays, or 20 x 3-hour sessions together with 6 Saturdays. The course is held at 24 different venues. This includes Rathkeale (Tel: ) and Ennis Tel: ) which are closest to County Kerry. Please phone for details. 7

The weekend course takes place on Friday nights and all day Saturday. It is planned that the weekend group will convene, on average, at two-weekly intervals throughout the year. Courses commence in October each year. The College teaches courses in Dublin, Belfast, Kilkenny and Athlone. Three-year part-time course. 10 weekends in the academic year commencing in October (Dates to be provided.) Students meet bi-monthly in small peer groups and are also expected to have at least 100 hours of weekly personal therapy on an individual basis during the course. Students must also complete 150 hours of client work. Graduates of the Diploma course are eligible to apply for an MSc programme with the University of Sheffield. This is a non-cao course, so applicants are required to obtain an application form. Two-year part-time programme. Formal training for anyone who provides counselling, personnel or employee assistance services as a regular part of their work. Prospective candidates do not need an undergraduate degree but must have experience working in the counselling field for at least one year prior to application and guaranteed for the duration of the course. (TCD also offers an undergraduate Diploma in Addiction Studies). MSc in Counselling Psychology A postgraduate course open to those with a 2 nd class Honours degree in Psychology or equivalent. The course is designed to equip students to work with young people and adults, individually and as group facilitators, in health, mental health, educational, private practice and business settings. 9
