4 a word of welcome from dunboyne college of further education It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to Dunboyne College of Further Education. Every attempt has been made by Dunboyne College to provide current and anticipated Award Titles and course content in this prospectus but it is possible that the published Award Titles and module titles may be altered as current FETAC developments evolve. Students need to familiarise themselves with the appropriate Award and Module titles prior to applying for courses at the college from September In the event of any doubt, applicants should consult with the FETAC web-site The college cannot be responsible for course alterations that may be required by FETAC or if for any reason due to rationalisation we need to change the content of any of our modules. In line with the development of the Accreditation and Quality Assurance process for Learners FETAC has, since 2009 been developing a Common Awards system for all of its FETAC certified awards. This means that all awards previously issued by FAS, NCVA, Teagasc, and Fáilte Ireland will be issued by FETAC only under Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). 4

When I left school I had a place in DIT to do Hospitality Management which I did for two weeks and I had no interest in it. Then I reapplied to the CAO and had a place in ITB to do Business and again it was not for me, so knowing time was in short supply I phoned around different PLC colleges and Pre-arts in Dunboyne appealed to me the most. I made lots of friends doing the course and I really enjoyed it. I got 9 distinctions and a pass which was enough to get me into Maynooth to do Arts. I did my three years of Arts (Geography and History) in Maynooth and I just graduated in September gone. At present I am doing an MA in Military History in Maynooth and I am enjoying it. If it wasn t for Dunboyne PLC somebody like me who only got 285 points in their Leaving Cert would never have got the opportunity of further education. jean deehan, past pupil and college lecturer Making my first step through the door of Dunboyne CFE, that was the hardest part. I really doubted if education was for me but I exceeded my expectations by completing my FETAC Level 5 in Social Studies in 2003 and then going on to achieve a BSc honours degree in Education and Training at DCU. Now I find myself teaching people like myself who have taken that first step and I am excited for them as I know the many doors of opportunity that are now open for them. No matter what your experience of education has been Dunboyne College of Education can help to you get on track to fulfil your potential. sorcha weafer-smyth, past pupil My name is Sorcha and I attended Dunboyne College of Further Education from September 2009 to May After missing my CAO course by five points I was faced with the prospect of not being able to go to college that year. I spoke with my career guidance counsellor at the time and he recommended I try Dunboyne CFE as there were FETAC links with many universities around Ireland. In Dunboyne I studied Pre-University
37 Business and Marketing as that was the career avenue I wanted to pursue at the time. The college encouraged self motivation and discipline in the sense that it was up to you to submit assignments on time and to attend lectures; however in saying that, each teacher went out of their way to assist every student in achieving their goals. I graduated with nine distinctions in October 2010 and am currently in my second year of Economics & Finance in NUI Maynooth. I would like to accredit Dunboyne College of Further Education for helping me in a time of great stress and panic; while also making the transition from secondary school to university an easy adjustment. kate gallagher, past pupil My name is Kate Gallagher, I attended Dunboyne College of Further Education from September 2010 to May All through school I found the exam system did not suit me, as I tend to freeze under exam pressure. I really wanted to go on to do Event Management in DIT but unfortunately did not achieve the points required. After I got over the disappointment I sat down and looked at my options. To begin with I did not consider further education but following discussion with my parents and some of my previous teachers I embarked on a Pre-Business and Marketing course in DCFE. One year on I am in DIT studying Event Management and really enjoying it. Looking back, my year in DCFE was one of the best decisions I ever made. I not only matured during the year and grew in confidence but have also made friends that I know I will keep in touch with. The track record of students studying in the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown after taking a FETAC level 5 course is particularly impressive. Students entering the Institute through this route generally obtain excellent results and attain high academic standards throughout their third level course.
