1 Making an application for the Professional Diploma in Post-Primary Education (PDE) If you are considering making an application for the PDE programme, following is what you need to do: 1. Meet the minimum entry criteria Hold a Level 8 degree (this is an Honours Bachelors degree) the grade you achieved is not relevant Have Leaving certificate English to a grade C at Ordinary level or grade D at Honours level Meet subject-specific criteria as detailed below 2. Make sure your degree and the subjects contained within it is included in the Teaching Council s list This list is on the Teaching Council s website, and a link to the relevant page is on the Hibernia College website 3. Select your teaching subjects Hibernia College require you to select two teaching subjects from the 13 offered: Accounting; Biology; Business; Chemistry; CSPE; Economics; English; Gaeilge; Geography; History; Maths; Modern Languages; Physics Only one of these will be considered your main teaching subject, so if, for instance, you select History with Geography as your second subject, you will study both methodologies and complete professional practice in both, but you will be considered a History applicant/student You need to ensure that your main teaching subject constitutes a minimum of 54 ECTS credits, which is approximately one third of an Honours Bachelors degree Your second teaching subject must have been an element within your degree. If, for instance, you took an Arts degree of English and Music with Gaeilge as your first year subject, you could (assuming you meet the credit requirements) select English and Gaeilge as your teaching subjects. If your second teaching subject is a smaller element within your degree, you may not receive Teaching Council registration in that subject. 4. Ensure you meet Teaching Council criteria for registration Applying for, being accepted onto and completing any PDE in no way implies or guarantees that you will receive Teaching Council registration. It is the applicant s sole responsibility to check and verify that they will be registered. Hibernia College takes no responsibility for any student who does not receive registration having completed the programme (assuming they meet the minimum entry criteria). 5. Complete the application form before 31 st August Application forms are available from the Hibernia College website for print Applications must be received in hard copy and be accompanied by certified copies of transcripts for each of the years of your degree and your Leaving Certificate results plus the 75 application fee

The College cannot accept photocopies. Transcripts must be original or a certified copy. Please also note that going forward, if the institution that you studied at offer online verification mechanisms to authenticate documents, we will accept this as a method of verifying your transcripts. Please ensure that you enclose the unique identifying codes and usernames to enable us to do so. A certified copy is a photocopy of an official document certified as being a true copy of the original by either a Garda or solicitor. To obtain a certified copy, you should make a photocopy of your original document and bring the original and the copy to a solicitor or Garda station. The solicitor or Garda will look at both, confirm the two are identical and stamp and sign the photocopy, which is then the certified copy (you need not do this for each of your 4 versions of your transcripts you may submit photocopies of the same certified copy). In doing this, we have verification that your qualifications or results are correct and legitimate, and you will keep your original documents. 3 of 14

9 SECTION 9: FEE PAYMENT - COST OF PROGRAMME The Hibernia College tuition fee for post-graduate programmes in initial teacher education leading to recognised teacher status is 8,950. Tuition fees may be eligible for tax relief at the marginal rate. Additional fees payable over the course of the programme: Graduation - 60 (this was the fee for 2011) A non-refundable application fee of 75 must be included with your application form. A non-refundable deposit of 10% of the tuition fee (i.e. 895) must be paid to the College on successful admission to secure your place. The remainder of course fees must be paid prior to the course commencement date. All fees are non-refundable. Cheques, drafts and money orders are payable to Hibernia College. You may also pay by credit card by completing the form below. 12 APPLICATION INFORMATION SHEET Note 1: Applicants selected for interview will be contacted by and/or phone during working hours. Please provide a daytime/mobile number for this purpose. Applicants will be required to confirm their availability to attend for an interview within a number of days of being notified and as such, it is important that you check your and voice mail at regular intervals during the admissions process. The certified copy must be stamped and signed by your local Garda Station, a solicitor or peace commissioner. Bring your original transcripts plus a photocopy to any of the above. If you have a letter of recognition from the DES or the Teaching Council, you must submit a copy of this. Please also include details of any postgraduate qualifications you hold and include a copy of your transcript of results. 13 Note 5: Entry requirements Applicants should have: A Level 8 degree, which either: o Satisfies the curricular subject criteria published by the Teaching Council and is included on the Teaching Council s List of Degree/Teacher Education Programmes Recognised for Post-Primary Registration Purposes o Has been previously assessed by the Registration Council of the Department of Education and Skills or the Teaching Council for the purpose of post primary teaching. A copy of the letter confirming recognition will be required. Hibernia College is in no way responsible for the assessment of qualifications for the purpose of registration. Whilst we will make every effort at the time of application to notify applicants if we believe there may be a concern with their qualification, the fact that they are accepted to the PDE does NOT mean their degree will be recognised for entry to the Register of Teachers by the Teaching Council. Hibernia College will not be held responsible if a graduate of the Higher Diploma is refused admission to the Register of Teachers on the basis of an erroneous declaration at the point of application and admission to the programme. In addition, applications are required to possess: Minimum grade C (ordinary level) or grade D (higher level) in Leaving Cert English Or For students who sat the GCSE and GCE A Level examinations: Minimum grade C in GCSE English Minimum grade C in GCSE English Literature The following will also satisfy the minimum requirements in English: an equivalent qualification and standard in English. Students who are unsure of the level of their primary degree should contact the conferring college or university or contact the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland at Note that there are no concessions for mature students. All applicants must meet the same minimum entry requirements to be considered for admission to the programme and all applicants who meet those requirements will be called for interview. All students entering the programme will be subject to Garda Vetting. Students successful in securing an offer on the PDE programme will be advised that all offers are subject to a satisfactory Garda Vetting. Entry to the programme will be a two-stage process. All applicants satisfying the academic entry requirement will then be called for an interview. Interviews will be carried out by an experienced panel. Note 6: First Teaching Subjects Each student teacher will study recognised post-primary subjects that were taken as a major component of their degree programme as per Teaching Council regulations. Applicants should refer to the Teaching Council s General and special requirements for teachers of recognised subjects in mainstream post-primary education and the List of Degree/Teacher Education Programmes Recognised for Post-Primary Registration Purposes. Alternatively, those students who have a letter of recognition from the DES or the Teaching Council will study those subjects for which they have been recognised for registration purposes. 13 of 14

14 Note 7: Second Teaching Subject Students may be registered by the Teaching Council in their second subject provided their degree is also recognised for this subject for the purpose of registration as a post primary teacher (see Note 6). Any student who has only studied one subject at degree level or does not have a second subject recognised by the Teaching Council for the purpose of registration as a post primary teacher will be offered the opportunity to undertake a second curriculum methodology. Suitability for a second subject methodology will be assessed by the Programme Director. In some cases, substantial work experience and/or alternative study (for example at Master s level) in a second subject may enable the student to choose this subject as a second methodology. Note that evidence of experiential learning to demonstrate subject knowledge and competence may be required and that such claims will be assessed on an individual basis and that experiential evidence provided must be validated by the School Principal or Head of Department as appropriate. All students are required to study a second methodology. Students can only register with the Teaching Council as a teacher of this second subject if their degree satisfies the Teaching Council s recognition requirements for this subject. 14 of 14
