Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) Utility Energy Efficiency Opportunities Discussion & Demos July 2, 2013 Ted Brown Sr. Energy Management Analyst Data Center / IT Energy Efficiency ted.brown@seattle.gov
OVERVIEW Introductions Background on Seattle City Light (SCL) What is DCIM? DCIM & Energy Efficiency BPA SCL Dashboard Monitoring Pilot DCIM System Live Demo
Seattle City Light (SCL) Background Data center efficiency efforts delivering energy savings, meeting utility expectations Small # of customers / incentive projects Relatively large kwh & incentives per project Primarily HVAC equipment measures Most participation in facilities with >500 kw IT Load Tracking for MWh in data center energy savings for 2013 SCL Data Center Program Activity % of C&I MWh % of C&I MWh Totals Project activity Number of Cust. Projects N/A N/A % 0.8% % 3.6% % ~3% 12 * Does not include data center measures included in larger projects Conserving Today. Sustaining Tomorrow.
What Is DCIM? Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) 1 DCIM tools monitor, measure, manage and/or control data center utilization and energy consumption of all IT-related equipment (such as servers, storage and network switches) and facility infrastructure components (such as power distribution units [PDUs] and computer room air conditioners [CRACs]). Environmental Monitoring Asset Management Space / Capacity Planning 1 Gartner Research definition
What Is DCIM? Existing DCIM systems tend to serve IT or Facilities very well, and be less than optimal for other stakeholders in the data center Typically provide snapshot dashboards of key metrics for the audience implementing the system Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) Key environmental metrics Temperatures, humidity, Power use Alerts
What Is DCIM? Small sample of some stakeholders in the data center, metrics that they re most concerned with, and some DCIM applications that tend to serve each group the t best. Trend is for consolidation of these silos for one DCIM system to serve all needs eds IT / Operations / Finance Asset Management Capacity Management Rack Utilization Network utilization Power & Environmental monitoring Alarming FieldView Nlyte Raritan DC Track Emerson Trellis / IBM APC - StruxureWare Facilities Power & Environmental monitoring Alarming Control of HVAC / Power infrastructure Trending of data points Bldg Mgmt. 20 Preliminary Conclusions Dashboards are very effective tools for facility managers Simplifies participation in utility incentive projects Participants are using systems primarily to optimize HVAC systems Effectiveness dependent on the people operating the data center IT equipment efficiency measures are likely to emerge in the future. Monitoring of IT power usage will likely be a key component for validating these measures.
