3 PLENARY PROFILES Debra Jarvis is not your typical hospital chaplain, said the people at TED when they produced Debra s 2014 TEDMED talk given in Washington, DC (tedmed talk given in washington, d.c). They are right. Debra has been a hospital and hospice chaplain for more than 30 years. She is also an international speaker, producer, cancer survivor and author of It s Not About the Hair: And Other Certainties of Life & Cancer, and other books. Before completing a sabbatical in Geneva this summer, Debra worked at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, as a writer-in-residence for the University Congregational Church of Christ in Seattle and as a pastoral consultant for volunteer groups caring for people with AIDS and MS. Debra values humor as a survival strategy for patients and families and for hospice and palliative care professionals. Debra will inspire you to discover strengths you never knew you had. Jennifer Kennedy, MA, BSN, CHC is the Director of Regulatory and Compliance for the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization. She has nearly 30 years of experience as a leader and nurse in diverse healthcare settings. Jennifer has worked in hospice care for more than 16 years and at NHPCO for over 8 years as one of the leads for hospice compliance. She has a Bachelor s degree in nursing, a dual master s degree in health education and case management, and is currently working on a doctoral degree in health care education and policy. Jennifer speaks at national and state conferences, writes articles for trade journals, contributes to health care publisher materials and develops education and resources for hospice and palliative care providers. Jennifer is a trusted colleague and resource for Oregon s and the nation s hospices. Jason Malcom is the Coordinator of the VA Portland Health Care System s (VAPHCS) Bereavement Program, the Clinical Social Worker for the Palliative Care Consult Team, and the Clinical Social Worker assigned to the Department of Geriatrics. Jason serves as a board member for the VA NW Network s Social Work Professional Standards Board, clinical preceptor for VAPHCS Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship Program. He been a guest lecturer on traumatic grief at Lewis and Clark College s Graduate School of Counseling and is an adjunct professor at Portland State University. Ryan Weller, LSCW, is the Director of the Portland VA Medical Center s Interprofessional Fellowship Program in Palliative Care, the Palliative Care Program Manager for the VA s Northwest Network (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington), and Coordinator of the PVAMC Palliative Care Consult Team. He is a member of the Oregon Hospice Association Board of Directors. He is a mentor in New York University s Palliative Leadership Fellowship, and a columnist for the Journal of Palliative Medicine s social media portal. Ryan s commitment to hospice and palliative care began in 1995 when he started a year of training with Wellspring Hospice-At-Home in London, England. He is a member of the Oregon Hospice Association Board of Directors. David R. Grube, MD joined Compassion & Choices as one of its two Oregon and National medical directors in He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and retired after practicing for 35 years. He continues to teach medical students. Dr. Grube has been a leader in the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians and Oregon Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. He was honored as Oregon Medical Association Doctor Citizen of the Year in He was appointed to the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners (now Oregon Medical Board) in 2001 and served seven years, including two years as president. He was honored as Family Physician of the Year in 1986 by the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Grube currently serves on the Board of Directors for Benton Hospice Service in Corvallis. 3

Other states legislatures and their communities struggle with whether aid in dying should be a reality in their state. Oregon s reality has evolved over 17 years of experience. Dr. Grube will discuss the history of the Death With Dignity Act, the basic elements of it, and the integration of aid in dying with hospice and palliative care as providers strive to meet the needs of Oregonians who make this choice 93% of whom are hospice patients. Dr. Grube will also discuss the requests Compassion and Choices regularly receives from Oregon hospice and palliative care professionals. 5
