4 B E S T B U D D I E S Best Buddies is an international organization to promote one-to-one friendships for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Best Buddies at ARMS is a group of students with and without special needs. Our goal is to get to know each other and have fun together. Come and make a friend and be a friend! First club meeting is Monday, October 5th. Mondays- 3:00-3:50 Ms. O Donovan & UMASS Boltwood students L A T I N C L U B Latin Club is a place for students to have fun with the Classics. We play games, build our knowledge of Latin and the ancient Mediterranean, and put on a crazy play at Pioneer Valley Classics Day. If you want to have fun with Latin and mythology, join us!. First meeting day is Monday, October 5th. L E O C L U B The Leo Club is the youth branch of the Lions club which is dedicated to meeting humanitarian needs throughout the world. The Leo Club at ARMS is a community service club dedicated to helping our community. We have volunteered at and raised money for local service organizations such as Shriner's Hospital, Not Bread Alone, Amherst Survival Center, and NEADS. We even painted welcome in 24 different languages outside our school. Come and join us if you are looking to help others and have fun! Come and be part of deciding what we can do for our community this year! First meeting day is October 8th. Ms. O Donovan C-5M Mondays 3:00-3:50 Mr. William C-15A ART CLUB S C I E N C E C L U B In Science Club this year, we will be working to identify and help solve a real-life science related problem in our community. Maximum number of students in this club is 12. First Meeting: October 15 Page 4 Ms. Welborn & Professor DV from UMAS, Amherst, will be co-advising this club C-1 Join us in art club, where we will work individually and collaboratively to create unique and interesting works of art! We will explore a variety of materials, practice our art skills and techniques, and develop our artistic voice. Maximum number of students for the club is 12. 5 LEADERSHIP CLUB The mission of the ARMS School Leadership is to provide leadership opportunities for students at ARMS. The club will plan and organizes school events, discuss issues they feel are important, and provide information to administration that will guide decisions that are made at ARMS. First Meeting: October 6 Mr. Sadiq C-1L DIGITAL GAME DESIGN CLUB Digital Game Design Club is open to all students who are interested in video games and game design. Club members will become part of "Gamestar Mechanic," an online community where they can play games to earn the components they need to design their own games. Club members will be able to play, review, and comment on each others' games. No programming is required. Level up from player to designer! See the short video at to learn more. Maximum limit 25 students. First day October 19 Mondays-3:00-3:50 Peter Riedel The Library THEATER TECH TEAM Learn how to operate the sound board, lights and audio/visual equipment in the auditorium. Theater Tech Team plans and sponsors a monthly "Open Mic" for the school on the last Thursday of the month for students to sing, dance, play music, read poetry, twirl a baton or what ever talent they want to share. Tech Team members also help out at Class and School Meetings in the auditorium and special events (on a voluntary basis). Please note: To be a part of the "Tech Team" attending two training sessions October 15 and October 22 is required. First Meeting: October 8 Ms. Wilson Auditorium C-6M SONGS FROM THE HEART This club will be run by Mr. Lawrence-Riddell (aka Mr. L-R or Mister El -Are). For most of his young adult and adult life, Mr. L-R has been an educator and a Hip-Hop artist. He has traveled all over the United States performing rap music and spoken word poetry. In Songs from the Heart you will have an opportunity to experiment with writing your own songs and learning the basics of how to record original songs. Our ultimate goal will be to record an album of original songs by ARMS students. First day October 13 Mr. Lawrence-Riddell C-7A Page 8 Page 5

6 MATH COUNTS CLUB This club is for those who enjoy working on and solving challenging math problems. Work will sometimes be individual and sometimes collaborative. We will also be in "training" for the math counts regional competition which is generally held in February. (Last year we came in 6th at the competition and we aim for even better this year). The state competition is optional, so you are welcome to join us after school on Thursdays whether you plan to participate in that or not. No limit to number of students in this club. First meeting is Thursday Oct 15th. Mr. Zakon-Anderson (Z-A) C-4 L G B T Q A N D F R I E N D S C L UB LGBTQ & friends is a group where ALL ARE WELCOME. We are made up of people concerned with the issues and rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning community. We are allies, people with friends and family who identify as LGBTQ and people who identify as (or think they might be) LGBTQ. All are welcome. We have discussions, make art, take action, and educate ourselves and others. Please join us for acceptance, fun and good conversation. First meeting day is Tuesday, October 6th. Ms. Tippett, Mr. Riedel & Ms. Nye C-1M ROCK AND ROLL CLUB Do you like to play rock n' roll? We like to play rock n' roll! The Rock n' Roll Club is a musical club that meets weekly to practice and perform music. We select songs that seem like they would be fun to play, learn them, and rock out! Last year, some of the songs we worked on included "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osborne, "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes, and "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns n' Roses. We are excited for another year of rock! I M P R O V C L U B Learn a dizzying array of theater improv games and performance styles, including "Short Form" and "Long Form" improv. The club starts with warm up group games followed by practicing different styles and structured games for performance. New this year: The club will be in TWO SECTIONS- - Section A for returning 8th Grade students and Section B for new 7th and 8th Grade students. Sections will meet every other week, with the possibility of merging mid year to meet on a weekly basis. All interested in being in Improv Club (regardless of section) please come to the first club meeting on Tuesday, October 6 Ms. Wilson, Club Director Auditorium C-6M The Rock n' Roll Club is open to anyone who has some level of previous musical experience and likes to have a good time playing music. We currently have a drum set, several amplifiers, and a variety of guitars available for student use. Students can also bring their own instruments. While the Rock n' Roll Club has tremendous respect for everyone, we can only accept people into the club who already know how to play their instrument at least moderately well. Different skill levels are fine, but structurally we don't have the ability to give lessons if you've never actually played the instrument but want to learn Come play rock n' roll with us!
