BUSINESS INTERNSHIP At ECU, our Business students get the opportunity to apply for business internship opportunities that comprise a minimum of 16 weeks (600 hours) of full-time work experience in a public, private or not-for-profit organisation. The unique Internship program allows them to develop professional networks; practice applying theory learned during their degree, and develop skills and capabilities required to succeed in their chosen profession. This real-world experience enables students to graduate career-ready. Our Accounting major, accredited by CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and Institute of Public Accountants, and our Human Resource Management major, accredited by Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) are just a few of our many popular areas of study. FLEXIBILITY AND CHOICE ECU s Business courses are flexible, offering full-time, part time and online study modes. Courses are available at our campuses in, Lawley and Bunbury. There are a variety of courses and majors to choose from, leading to a wide choice of career options upon graduation. Students can choose from popular conventional disciplines like Accounting and Finance, to more contemporary ones like Event Management and Planning. No matter what their choice, students graduate with a range of employment skills and experience that will help them hit the ground running. WITH AN ATAR OF 97.65, I HAD MANY OPTIONS BEFORE ME. I chose ECU because I liked how it emphasises the value of practical knowledge, instead of just theory. Also, it had the best atmosphere and campus facilities of the universities I attended for open days. I m only one and a half years into my degree and I have already created a major financial model to complete a valuation of Fortescue Metals Group (FMG). I ve also had the opportunity to meet many contacts from the financial sector within the mining industry, including the CFO of FMG. 4 Real-world experiences ECU BUSINESS STUDENT, WESTPAC CEO FOR THE DAY ECU Business student Amy Joslyn had a unique experience while working as a Bank Teller at Westpac during the holidays. She was chosen out of hundreds of applicants across Australia to become CEO of Westpac for a day. Amy is pursuing a Business and Arts double degree that she feels, perfectly suits her interests. I will be able to further my career in Banking through my Business degree, while the visual arts major gives me the ability to utilise my creativity! The processes I ve learnt and knowledge I ve gained at ECU have led me to have a better understanding such that I can showcase my skills and perform better at work. As the Westpac CEO for the day, Amy spent the day alongside then CEO Gail Kelly, undertaking tasks such as meeting Westpac s biggest customers and attending meetings. STUDENTS EXPERIENCE A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PLANNER Planning students in the Practice of Planning unit recently experienced A Day in the Life of a Planner during a one day industry placement. The aim of this placement was to bridge the gap between theory and practice, providing students with skills for the workplace. The students spent time with professional planners in the public and private sectors, learning about the day-to-day tasks of the job, and receiving advice from experienced planners. Besides getting a preview of what their future career might be like, students were given the opportunity to make strong connections with industry. TOURISM STUDENTS JOURNEY THROUGH SABAH Tourism and Hospitality students from ECU embarked on a ten-day journey through the land of Sabah to acquire knowledge and experience on ecotourism. The visit was led by Professor Ross Dowling in conjunction with Mr Albert Teo, Managing Director of Borneo Eco Tours and Sukau Rainforest Lodge. In addition to several charity events and donation ceremonies organised by the students, the group had a great wildlife viewing experience on several river cruises where they sighted many endangered species. A highly emotional highlight of the tour was the group s attendance at ANZAC Day s Dawn Service at Sandakan War Memorial Park. The students summarised the study tour as an eye-opener and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Amy Joslyn with former Westpac CEO, Gail Kelly ECU AT ENACTUS BEIJING WORLD CUP 4 ECU Business student Kym Arnold recently got the opportunity to represent ECU at the Enactus (Entrepreneurs Action for Us) World Cup in Beijing. As the incoming President for the ECU Enactus team in 2014, Kym received a scholarship from Enactus Australia so she could see how teams from around the world compete at a global level. It was a great learning opportunity for me, said Kym, I got to see how other Enactus teams from around the world are creating and delivering worthwhile community projects. I have learnt so much. At the three-day event, Kym was able to watch presentations from teams representing the US, Ireland, Malaysia and others, and networked with leading industry figures and fellow students. 5 Hanna Oeyre in action at the WorldSkills Australia Expo ECU BUSINESS GRADUATE A RISING STAR Chris Frame, an ECU Bachelor of Business graduate was awarded the Gold Medal for Rising Star in the 30 Under 30 category at the Customer Service Council National Awards at the 12th annual Customer Service Council of Australia Annual Awards last year. This award recognised Chris customer-centric approach to marketing Bethanie Services to elderly customers across WA, as well as his work as a maritime author and public speaker. Speaking at the Awards, Chris, General Manager, Marketing & Brand at Bethanie said I became a confident public speaker during my time at ECU by participating in an advanced public speaking course. That changed the course of my life as I went from being a very nervous speaker to hosting maritime lectures aboard QM2 that have audiences of around 500 people. Presented by the Customer Service Council of Australia, the Customer Service Excellence Awards Raising the Standards encourages individuals and organisations to achieve and promote customer service and excellence, innovation, and best practice. EVENT MANAGEMENT STUDENTS COORDINATE WORKSKILLS AUSTRALIA EXPO Business students Hayley Knowles and Hanna Oeyre were offered the amazing opportunity to coordinate the closing ceremony of one of Perth s largest skills expos held in October The Event Management students were invited to undertake the shared role of Event Coordinator for the Closing Ceremony as part of their Industry Practice unit. What really excited me was the adrenaline rush in the lead-up to curtain call, said Hanna, a Business student from Norway, I drew extensively on my knowledge gained in event management units. The satisfaction post event, knowing it ran smoothly, was the highlight of my experience. The students were responsible for a variety of tasks including the creative concept, staging requirements, logistics, volunteer management and staging the event. Speaking on her experience, Sport, Recreation and Event Management student Hayley said, Our experience helped us really understand what it takes to create an exciting, creative and engaging ceremony. Chris Frame BUSINESS STUDENTS TOUR THE USA ECU Business students embarked on an 18-day international study tour to the USA last year. Venturing through Los Angeles, Colorado, New York and San Francisco, the tour was designed to explore major sporting stadiums (eg. Madison Square Garden in NY and Angels Stadium in LA). Students also got to learn about event management operations and college sport and recreation programs and facilities at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Southern California (USC) and the University of Northern Colorado (UNCO). Students got to see first-hand how the Australian sport delivery system compares to the USA. Tour Leader, Dr Alicia Stanway gave a guest lecture on Australia s sport delivery model to UCLA staff and students. ECU students engaged in presentations by leading American authorities on sport and sport management. Students also had plenty of opportunities to challenge their physical prowess including a full-day hike through the Colorado Rocky ains and challenging their limits on the High Ropes Course, as well as recreational activities such as a Broadway show in New York and an Alcatraz tour in San Francisco. All of the majors offered are created in consultation with industry, and many are professionally recognised and accredited. Students benefit from relevant and internationally credible course content that provides practical industry experience, networking opportunities and a broad range of career options after graduating. Internship Option The ECU Business Internship program provides students with a unique opportunity to gain valuable real-world experience in a public, private or not-for-profit organisation. It enables students to gain full-time work experience, allowing them to develop professional networks, practice applying theory learned during their degree, develop skills and capabilities required to succeed in their chosen profession, and gain a better understanding of the nature of employment and professional conduct in their chosen industry. Internship Attendance Requirement: The internship program forms one full semester of study and enables students to gain a minimum of 16 weeks (600 hours) of full-time work experience. Corporate Accountant, Manager, Economic Adviser, Financial Analyst, Human Resources Manager, Recruitment Consultant, Project Manager, Marketing/Sales Manager, Sport/Event Manager, Hotel/Tourism Manager Structure Students are required to complete 3 Business Edge units, 5 Core units and an 8-unit Business Major. This will be supported by a supplementary program comprising of: a second 8-unit Business Major (or an 8-unit Major from another Faculty); or two 4-unit Minors; or a 4-unit Minor plus 4 Elective units; or 8 Elective units. I CHOSE BUSINESS AT ECU BECAUSE OF ITS FLEXIBILITY AND STRONG REPUTATION AS A PRACTICAL UNIVERSITY. ECU was my preferred choice due to its flexible course structure and strong reputation as a practical university. I was unsure what field of business I wanted to work in so I was looking for a degree that allowed me to explore my options. ECU s Bachelor of Business exposed me to a number of different disciplines in my first year, giving me the time to explore my options. I m now the CFO at a leading global resources company, BHP Billiton. 10 Accounting & Finance BACHELOR OF BUSINESS Accounting Major Full-time study Part-time study BACHELOR OF BUSINESS Finance Major Full-time study Part-time study Provides students with a strong foundation in accounting theory and principles as well as practical skills in accounting and related areas. This major also develops a student s capacity for inquiry, abstract logical thinking and critical analysis, as well as the communication and interpersonal skills, that will enable them to work in various collaborative contexts with accountants and non-accountants. Professional Recognition Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, CPA Australia and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) have accredited this unit set. This Accounting major is only accredited when taken as part of the Bachelor of Business course or a double degree which includes the Bachelor of Business. Employment Opportunities Potential careers exist in public practice, industry and government, as well as consulting in areas such as auditing, financial accounting, management accounting, taxation and corporation law. In recent years, opportunities for accountants in allied business functions, such as treasury, superannuation, financial planning, corporate planning, mergers and acquisitions, corporate reconstructions and insolvency have also been increasing. Accountant, Company Secretary, Corporate Accountant, Management Accountant, Practising Accountant, Public Accountant, Auditor, Tax Assessor/Planner Students learn the fundamental principles of financial valuation and investment decision making. There is a strong focus to develop technical and analytical skills. The major is recommended for students aspiring towards a career in financial consultancy, management, planning, services and banking. Key employability skills are also embedded in this major. These include leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, communication, problem solving and the ability to collaborate across various divisions of an organisation. Employment Opportunities Graduates can look forward to a career in retail and corporate banking, investment services, corporate advisory and financial planning. Employment opportunities can be found in mining and resources, health, property, corporate services, banking, and government. I chose ECU due to its flexibility with a range of campuses and flexible study options and timetables, as well as the greater focus on hands-on learning experience with the Business Edge units. In fact these were the factors that led to my decision to switch from UWA to ECU. My greatest achievement so far has been completing a full-time study load while also working full-time, and this definitely would not have been possible without ECU s flexibility and support. I am now working as an Accountant at a highly reputable property development firm, and am putting into practice many of the skills learnt at uni. I was attracted to the Bachelor of Business by the practical nature of the course. Academically, Business at ECU teaches you a range of real-world skills, like pitching yourself to clients and time management. I found the time management skills invaluable. At one time, I was studying full-time, working 32 hours a week, applying to firms and participating in the Deloitte Dream Team! I managed to hold down my job, achieved academic success and came 4th in the Dream Team all thanks to time management and a lot of support and flexibility from the staff at ECU. Human Resource Management has become an integral part of organisational strategy. This major addresses the complexity of this function in the context of legal, social and economic developments, as well as providing the practical experience and employability skills of critical thinking, teamwork, communication and problem-solving, sought by graduate employers. This Human Resource Management major is only accredited when taken as part of the Bachelor of Business course or a double degree which includes the Bachelor of Business. Plus, it s close to home, a major shopping centre and classes are easy to find. The course material has been excellent, providing both theoretical and workplace application approaches. There are plenty of case studies and industry guest speakers to learn from, and questions and discussions about course material are encouraged. My best experiences at ECU so far include the networking and friends I have made, the business and personal development opportunities I have been given and the social activities I have participated in, such as the indoor soccer program. This major develops students theoretical and practical understanding of organisational behaviour, leadership, general management, strategic management and people management. It also provides the employability skills of critical thinking, teamwork, communication and problem-solving, that are sought by employers, to open doors to a wide range of career options. The major is relevant for all line managers, and professionals aspiring to be in managerial positions. Business Manager, Manager, Team Leader, Supervisor, Administrator ECU IS GIVING ME THE SUPPORT I NEED TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS. ECU came strongly recommended through family and friends due to the one-on-one time the lecturers and support staff offer. As a mature aged student, I wanted to feel as though I could seek help and support whenever I required it, and ECU gave me exactly that. I entered ECU through the University Preparation Course which gave me the support I needed to succeed. I am now completing a Business course and could not be happier with where my career is heading. My sister had attended ECU and seeing her fantastic experience, I decided to enrol for the Sport, Recreation and Event Management course that has been one of my best decisions so far! The lecturers knew a lot about the industry and had many contacts within it. In my last semester I got an industry prac placement with the Fremantle Dockers Football Club in the Events Department. Due to my positive work ethic I was offered (and accepted) employment on a casual basis. When Fremantle made it to their first ever home preliminary final, it was so exciting to be a part of it all! On the Thursday before the finals I was suddenly asked to fly over to Melbourne to fill in for a permanent staff member it was such an honour to even be considered and a great feeling. Over in Melbourne at the Grand Finals, I was in charge of managing security, caterers and audio technicians. All the skills and theory I picked up in my years at ECU helped me play a part running the biggest function the club had in many years the Fremantle Dockers first historic grand final.
