4 Meal Plan FAQ s What I Need To Know About Meal Plans? Meal plans are designed with our students in mind. We offer various levels of meal plans to accommodate the various requirements of our students. You should choose a plan that provides you with the options that best meet your needs. Students residing on campus in a non-mandatory residence hall do not have to purchase a meal plan but can voluntarily choose any of the available plans. I am a freshman student. Can I change or cancel my meal plan? All freshman students who live in a mandatory residence, Tubman Quad (Wheatley, Baldwin, Frazier, Truth and Crandall) Bethune Annex, Cook and Drew halls, are automatically added to the 14 Meal Plan and cannot cancel their meal plan, but if so desired, may choose the 19 Meal Plan, Block 170 or Block 140 Meal Plan instead. Meals are not transferable to any other individual, are non-refundable and must be consumed in the cafes in Blackburn or Bethune Annex. Do I have to sign up for a meal plan for the Spring Semester? Meal Plan charges automatically roll over from the Fall semester to the Spring semester. What happens to my meal plan if I move out of the mandatory residence? It is the student s responsibility to cancel the meal plan when they cancel housing. A refund percentage will be applied to the student account based on the date of cancel as published in the University Calendar. What is the deadline to cancel and/or change a Meal Plan? The Meal Plan Agreement cannot be cancelled after the second week of classes of the current semester. Thereafter cancellations are granted only when the student officially withdraws from the university, the refund percentage is based on the date of withdrawal and can be found on the University Academic Calendar. Where and how do I cancel my meal plan? If you do not reside in a mandatory meal plan residence hall you may cancel the meal plan during the first two weeks of each semester. You will be charged for the days of usage. Every student who has a meal plan has to abide by the deadline for plan changes and/or cancellation. Please visit the Bison One Card Office during the first two weeks of the current semester to cancel the plan if you do not wish to participate in the meal plan. The Bison One Card Office is open Monday through Friday from 9AM to 5PM and it is located at 1st floor of the ilab (On Bryant Street between 6th Street and Georgia Avenue). For additional information find us on the web at: How do the Traditional 19, Traditional 14, and On the Go Five meal plans work? The Traditional 19 provides for 19 meals per week. The Traditional 14 provides for 14 meals per week. The On the Go Five offers 5 meals per week. Meal plan usage resets every Friday morning. Meals not consumed during that week are forfeited and cannot be refunded. The dining dollars portion of your plan expires at the end of each semester. How do the Block Plans work? The Block plans are designed to provide flexibility throughout the semester. The Block 170 provides for 170 meals per semester or approximately 12 per week. The Block 140 provides for 140 meals per semester or approximately 9 per week. The Block 75 is approximately 5 meals per week. With these plans you can use a meal swipe to treat your friend or family and can use up to 5 meal swipes per day. Any unused meals by end of the semester are forfeited. The dining dollars portion of your plan expires at the end of every semester. Which Plans Are Available To Me? Residents: Students in the following residence halls are automatically added to the 14 Meal Plan (and may choose to upgrade to the 19 Meal Plan, Block 140 or Block 170 Meal Plan): Bethune Annex, Baldwin, Drew, Truth, Cook, Wheatley, Crandall, Frazier Commuters / Apartments Non-Residents have the opportunity to add any of the meal plan. Bison Bucks Bison Bucks is an account on the Bison One Card that allows for secure and convenient cashless spending on an off campus at many locations. It is a pre-deposited account that can be replenished by making deposits online. How do I get started? To activate Bison Bucks, simply access through and register. After receiving the and confirming registration, you re all set to begin loading funds! And it is easy to load Bison Bucks onto your card. How Do I Add Funds? To deposit funds, students can go to to add funds in increments of $15 up to $500, check balances and view transaction history and statements. Parents and relatives go to click on Manage My Bison ID to add funds to a student s Bison Bucks Account. Parents/relatives must know the student s ID number. Every dollar added is available to you and there are no transaction fees or minimum balances to maintain. Where can I use Bison Bucks? You can use Bison Bucks at all on-campus dining locations as well as a list of off-campus vendors and the bookstore. See and click on Using The Card for a list of participating vendors. 5 Blocks, meals, dollars, what s the difference? A Block meal plan provides you with a certain number of meals per semester to eat at our unlimited seconds location Blackburn and Bethune student restaurants. The Block 140 Meal Plan offers the most flexibility since you are not tied to a weekly schedule, but also give you the savings associated with a meal plan. You can eat one meal a day, one meal a week, or treat friends and use up to five meals at once. The choice is yours. Block Meal Plans are best suited for students who don t like to be tied to a weekly schedule, eat many meals every day, or who snack frequently. Meals come with every meal plan and grant you access to Blackburn and Bethune student restaurants only. Once you swipe into these two locations, you enter an all-you-care-to-eat dining experience. If you want to take your food to go, you must specify to the cashier as you cannot dine inside and take food to go. Dining Dollars come with each meal plan and act as a declining balance as you use them. They must be used in the semester of the meal plan. The account allows you to draw upon pre-deposited funds to purchase food throughout campus. You can use Dining Dollars at all on campus Howard Dining locations for meals, snacks, coffee, and beverages. Students typically use their Dining Dollars in retail locations and the c-stores. Meal Plan Policy The dining dollars portion of every plan expires at the end of every semester. Cancellations and changes granted within the first 2 weeks of class after the semester begins will have pro-rated charges based on a per diem up to the day of cancellation. Cancellations requested after the first two weeks of class will follow the University Policy for refund of resident hall fees as published in the University Academic Calendar on What if I have a medical condition or disability that prevents me from using the meal plan? If you have a medical condition or disability and would like to be exempted from the mandatory meal plan policy, you must submit required documentation to the Dean of Special Student Services, (Howard Center Suite Georgia Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20059) for evaluation. You will be advised on the next step. For additional information please call that office at What if I have an allergy or dietary needs? We can accommodate a variety of dietary requirements. You may discuss your needs with the Dining Services General Manager who, based on your doctor s recommendation, will assess our ability to accommodate your requirements. In the rare circumstances where we cannot accommodate your nutrition needs, you will be allowed to change/cancel your meal plan. Cancellations and changes are handled on a case-by-case basis. Where can I use my meal plan? The all you care to eat portion of your meal plan can be used at the Bison Restaurant in Blackburn. Students residing in Bethune Annex and Tubman Quad residence halls may also use meals in the Bethune Annex Cafe. The dining dollars portion of your meal plan can be used in various retail locations on campus that include: Jazzman s in A-Building, Punch Out, Sankofa, College of Medicine cart, School of Divinity cart, Law School dining facility, in the convenience stores located in Blackburn, Bethune Annex, Bison Restaurant in Blackburn Center and Meridian. For dining dollar only plans, you may pay the guest meal rate and use the Blackburn Café and Bethune Annex Café. When are the dining facilities closed? All dining facilities are closed when University is in recess during Thanksgiving weekend, Christmas holiday, and Spring Break. IMPORTANT: It is against Howard University policy to loan your student ID to another student for meal purchases. A student caught using another student s ID is referred to The Dean of Special Student Services for further disciplinary action. Students must abide by all rules, regulations and standards of conduct established by the University and as outlined in the Student Handbook. College of Medicine and School of Divinity Simply to Go Cafés These two areas provide quality grab and go food items with a quiet seating area.
