Kym-Maree Warner Executive MBA student chief financial officer, Coffee Club Franchising Group The EMBA is equipping me with knowledge, strategies and tools to further enhance my leadership and management skills. My career objective is to move into a chief executive officer/managing director role and the EMBA is facilitating the development of the necessary skills to bridge the gap between being a chief financial officer and chief executive officer. Through real-world case studies and lecturers with relevant commercial experience, this course applies theory to real life. Gaining knowledge of business tools, strategies and models that are useful in practice, not just in theory, will be beneficial to my future career growth. Kym-Maree is a chief financial officer with The Coffee Club Franchising Group. 15

For more information Contact the QUT Graduate School of Business by phone , bus@qut.edu.au or visit Kirsty O Connell MBA student and merit scholarship recipient corporate communication and external relations manager, LinkWater Every subject within my MBA has been so applicable. I walk out of a lecture with tools that I can apply the next day in my role as Corporate Communication and External Relations Manager at LinkWater. The broad subject matter means that I can make a greater contribution within multidisciplinary teams, and the strong focus on critical thinking has made me a more effective strategic adviser. I ve never regretted my decision to tackle my MBA or my choice of institution. This course has engaged my creative instincts, enabled me to travel internationally and build an amazing global professional network, and has made me a more effective manager, preparing me for the next step in my career. 16

19 Lee Carseldine Master of Business (Applied Finance)/MBA graduate corporate HSE contracts adviser with Arrow Energy When he s not busy playing professional cricket as a freelance Twenty20 cricketer, graduate Lee Carseldine is putting his MBA and Master of Business (Applied Finance) to the test working as Corporate HSE Contracts Adviser with Arrow Energy. His role within this coal seam gas company (CSG) uses core skills in the areas of corporate health and safety specialising in contractor management. This has given Lee the flexibility to continue his sporting profession while simultaneously gaining valuable corporate experience. When he finishes his cricketing career, Lee is looking to advance his career. I ve been given a great opportunity, the CSG industry is a growing sector and I will be looking to use my MBA and Applied Finance degree in this field. Life as a professional sports player is very fickle. Completing my MBA and Master of Business (Applied Finance) with QUT has given me a deeper understanding of the business world and equipped me with the specialised knowledge required to make a smooth transition from the sporting to the corporate field. 17

20 Coursework programs Master of Business Master of Business overview Postgraduate study by coursework You can complete your postgraduate study through coursework or research. Choosing the best option to suit you primarily depends on your reasons for study. If you are interested in using study as a way to change your qualifications, advance your career or start a new career, then coursework study is ideal for you. Flexibility Some of our courses can be broken down into smaller pieces so you can opt in and out when it suits you. For example, if you are having trouble finding time to continue in your masters program, you may be able to exit early with a graduate certificate or graduate diploma. Study options Graduate certificate You will study four units either full-time or part-time to complete a graduate certificate, which can take as little as one semester to complete. Graduate diploma A graduate diploma typically builds on a graduate certificate. You will study eight units either full-time or part-time. A graduate diploma can normally be completed in two to four semesters. Masters by coursework A masters degree is a further continuation of a graduate diploma and can be completed in two to eight semesters. It gives scope to study a selection of units in your field. Master of Business programs Our Master of Business program gives you the opportunity to gain specialist knowledge in a business discipline of your choice. You can build on your knowledge and critical understanding from previous studies, helping you to advance your business career. Or you can change careers into a range of business professions, even if you have not studied business before. Some majors also satisfy the requirements for professional recognition. The Master of Business Advanced gives you the opportunity to extend your studies, including options of a research dissertation, further coursework studies in your chosen major, or the choice of a minor in another business discipline. Under certain circumstances the Advanced program can also provide a pathway to doctoral-level studies. Program structure The Master of Business programs are available in 10 different disciplinary fields. You can choose from the following discipline areas: Accounting refer page 19 Professional Accounting refer page 20 Applied Finance refer page 21 Strategic Advertising refer page 22 Integrated Marketing Communication refer page 23 Public Relations refer page 24 Marketing refer page 25 International Business refer page 26 Human Resource Management refer page 27 Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies refer page 28. Each discipline area within the Master of Business consists of 144 credit points of study, which comprise both core and elective units. For those who are new to the discipline, there are 48 credit points of introductory units through which you will develop an appropriate level of foundation knowledge. Alternatively, if you have an appropriate undergraduate degree you may be entitled to receive credit for prior learning (advanced standing) for the introductory units. The remaining component of the program enables the development of deeper discipline knowledge through core and elective units (96 credit points). A further 48 credit points of study is available in the Master of Business Advanced program. This allows you to extend your studies to suit your career interests. The additional 48 credit points may include research studies, advanced coursework studies in your chosen discipline, or the choice of a minor in another business discipline. We encourage you to consult your subject area coordinator as early as possible in your studies to determine the best way to meet your career and learning needs. Credit for prior learning (advanced standing) Students may be granted credit (advanced standing) for up to 48 credit points for prior academic studies where the completed degree major directly relates to the discipline area you are studying. Credit will relate only to the general business component or introductory studies in the discipline area and is generally not available for advanced units. Credit may be granted only if the relevant undergraduate degree was completed within five years of commencement of the masters. requirements For all majors except Accounting, entry requirements are an undergraduate degree with an overall minimum grade point average of 4 (on a 7-point scale). Students entering the Master of Business (Accounting) major must have an appropriate degree in accountancy. Special entry Applicants without the requisite entry requirements may be considered for special entry.
