1 Education & Training W 12th Ave, North Kansas City, MO Ph Fax The Education & Training Department provides several educational opportunities for individuals looking to enter the construction industry, strengthen their current understanding, and/or move up within their companies. As you will see on the following pages, the department works in conjunction with other trade associations and educational organizations to provide academies, seminars, certificate programs, and even degree programs. ACADEMIES & SEMINARS 2015 Fall Estimating Academy SAVE THE DATE for The Builders Association s & American Subcontractor Association s 2015 Construction Expo with Management & Estimating Academy. The Education & Training Department coordinates the Management Academy and works in conjunction with the Heartland Chapter of the American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE) to host the Estimating Academy. The 2015 Academies will be offered on Wednesday October 21st from 1:00 pm 5:00 pm at the Overland Park Convention Center (6000 College Boulevard, Overland Park, KS 66211). The Kansas City Contractors Expo, including appetizers and beverages will run from 1:00-7:00 pm. Attendees will be able to mix management and estimating courses or stick to one track. This program will count for 4 hours of non-code credit through the Johnson County Contractors Licensing Program. 2 CERTIFICATE & DEGREE PROGRAMS Working in conjunction with Metropolitan Community College, the Education & Training Team teaches the Associated General Contractors Supervisory Training Program (STP). The STP is a nationally recognized 10 course certificate program developed for field supervisors interested in becoming more effective in managing people, time, equipment, and materials. Upon completion of each course, students receive a certificate of completion from The Builders Association/AGC-KC Chapter and upon completion of all 10 courses, students receive a Certificate of Completion from the Associated General Contractors Washington DC office. All ten courses are now offered online each year through Metropolitan Community College (MCC). All of the CSMG courses also count as credit hours toward MCC s Associates of Applied Science in Industrial Technologies Construction Management degree. 3 Supervisory Training Program (STP) Course Descriptions CSMG 150 (STP Unit 1) Construction Management Leadership Participants will develop an understanding of leadership and motivation as it relates to the construction trades. Core areas of concentration will be resources, supervisory role, teams and leadership skill development. (Available credits: 2 MCC College CSMG 170 (STP Unit 2) Communication for the Construction Trades Participants will understand communication as it relates to the construction industry. The importance of good communication skills in the workplace will be the focus of this course. (Available credits: 2 MCC College CSMG 110 (STP Unit 3) Problem Solving/Decision Making This course will help construction supervisors identify problems and how they occur and learn techniques for solving them. Supervisors will learn how to use the decision making process. (Available credits: 1 MCC College CSMG 260 (STP Unit 4) Contract Documents and Construction Law This course will help supervisors effectively use job related documents. Participants will understand contract documents are as important as any piece of equipment on the jobsite. (Available credits: 2 MCC College CSMG 220 (STP Unit 5) Construction Planning and Scheduling Participants will explore the techniques used to manage a construction project for which they are responsible and accountable. (Available credits: 2 MCC College CSMG 130 (STP Unit 6) Cost Awareness/Production Control Participants will study conditions that must be met if production is to be under control. They will also be able to use the Short Interval Production Schedule (SIPS) and will recognize factors that affect both the productivity of their work crews and the workers. (Available credits: 1 MCC College Credit Hour). CSMG 210 (STP Unit 7) Accident Prevention and Loss Control Participants will learn to think proactively about safety in their daily activities and will have a good knowledge of the risks involved in construction projects. They will also understand that there are many economic as well as humanistic consequences of unsafe operations (Available credits: 1 MCC College Credit Hour). This course is also available to those not interested in college credit. CSMG 160 (STP Unit 8) Construction Project Management Students will explore the techniques used to manage a construction project for which they are responsible and accountable. (Available credits: 2 MCC College CSMG 230 (STP Unit 9) Productivity Improvement Participants will study productivity improvement as well as external factors and internal factors that influence productivity. Necessary functions for a productive project will be analyzed. (Available credits: 2 MCC College CSMG 180 (STP Unit 10) General and Specialty Contractor Dynamics Students will explore all construction systems and the contractual relationships between the general and subcontractors on a construction job site. (Available credits: 2 MCC College
4 CSMG 120 OSHA and Site Security Additional Courses The Occupational Safety and Health Act will be studied and interpreted. The student will learn to recognize and avoid dangerous conditions and understand theft prevention techniques for the construction job site. (Available credits: 1 MCC College Blue Print Reading Series CSMG 140 Beginning Print Reading Students will learn the basics of construction drawings including appropriate terminology, the different views, and meanings of the various symbols. (Available credits: 2 MCC College Credit Hours and 8 Code Hours from the Johnson County Contractor Licensing Program). CSMG 205 Intermediate Print Reading Participants will continue to learn print reading for construction by working with pictorial, perspective, and orthographic drawings. Students will also learn how to scale/read dimensions, work with specifications, and identify material symbols on a drawing. (Available credits: 2 MCC College Credit Hours and 8 Code Hours from the Johnson County Contractor Licensing Program). CSMG 270 Advanced Print Reading Participants will apply their knowledge of lines, symbols, and various views to interpret residential and commercial plot, foundation, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and welding plans. (Available credits: 2 MCC College Credit Hours and 8 Code Hours from the Johnson County Contractor Licensing Program). The print reading courses meet at The Builders Association Training Center on Thursday evenings from 5:30-8:15 pm. All students seeking college credit must register through MCC. Students not seeking college credit may use the form at the end of this program to register for the course. The cost of each course for these students is $190. This does not include the cost of the book. GENERAL NOTES: Textbooks: Unless noted otherwise, course textbooks are not included in the prices above but may be purchased through the MCC Business & Technology Bookstore at bustech/ STP textbooks may also be purchased through the AGC Store at The AGC site allows AGC members to login for a discounted price. Cost of Courses: All courses taken through Metropolitan Community College are subject to MCC pricing. The current pricing per credit hour is $95. So, a two credit hour class would cost $190.
