2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about MSDE Courses 1. What is the difference between renewal units and MSDE credits? MSDE credits can be earned by any teacher who currently holds a Standard Professional Certificate (SPC) or Advanced Professional Certificate (APC). Renewal units may be earned by any teacher who currently holds an APC. 2. If a class is being offered for MSDE credits, can I attend for renewal units? No, participants can only receive MSDE credit. 3. Am I required to attend all MSDE classes in a specified course? Yes, attendance is mandatory unless an emergency occurs. 4. What should I do if an emergency does occur? Contact the instructor as soon as possible. Emergency absences must be approved and can only be supported once per course. 5. What if school is cancelled because of inclement weather? All classes will be re-scheduled to meet the requirements of the course. 6. Can I take MSDE courses through Thinkport or MSDE online? Yes, WCPS encourages teachers to take advantage of MSDE online courses. Follow all procedures for approval in your Professional Development Plan (PDP) and WCPS reimbursement procedures before the course begins. (Please refer to HR webpage for guidelines.) 7. Who should I contact about MSDE credit? Cindi Minnichbach at minnicin@wcps.k12.md.us 8. Who should I contact about renewal units, PDPs and reimbursement procedures? Certification at certification@wcps.k12.md.us or view the HR webpage for more information. 9. How do I receive my credit information? After all course paperwork has been completed by instructors and participants, the original copy will be sent to certification and a copy will be sent to you at your school. Please retain all copies for your records. 10. Is there a deadline for course registration? Yes, you must register through ERO by the posted deadline.

3 Classes Required by MSDE Materials for Teaching Reading (Elementary) Course # , 3 Credits This course will introduce teachers to assessing students reading, implementing cognitive strategies in reading, incorporating reading skills through student centered instruction, and to providing and/or supporting intrinsic motivation for reading This course requirement is determined by the Maryland State Department of Education and is standardized across the state. This local course provides participants with the MSDE course as determined by specific performance objectives, content/learning experiences, and evaluation methods prescribed by the state board of education. Date/Time Wednesday, September 16, through December 18, 2015 Online Mandatory face-to-face meeting (September 16, 2015, 4-5 PM) USM-Hagerstown 32 W. Methods of Reading Instruction (Elementary) Course # , 3 Credits This course is designed to present an array of research-based instructional techniques and strategies in the area of reading. Participants will learn instructional routines and strategies in the five major components of reading instruction (phonological and phonemic awareness; phonics; spelling and word study; fluency development; vocabulary; and comprehension) suitable for various age and ability groups. This course requirement is determined by the Maryland State Department of Education and is standardized across the state. This local course provides participants with the MSDE course as determined by specific performance objectives, content/learning experiences, and evaluation methods prescribed by the state board of education. 4 Methods of Teaching Reading in the Content Area Part I (Secondary) Course # , 3 Credits This course has been designed to insure that reading educators are equipped to encourage active engagement in learning by providing meaningful reading and writing connections within content specific classes. Candidates in this course will realize that reading educators must work in collaboration with schools and the community to affect change, realize that they are instructional leaders of reading and writing as they use a variety of instructional literacy approaches, and accept the role of reflective decision maker as they begin to research and monitor effective ways to teach reading and writing in classrooms. 7 Pedagogy Coaching for Excellence # , 2 Credits This course is designed for any teacher or administrator who has the opportunity to coach another educator and is interested in learning and applying coaching best practices. This year-long course will meet once a month and will provide opportunities for authentic coaching situations. 8 Supervising a Pre-Service Intern Teacher, Course # , 1-3 Credits This course is designed for teachers who have already been assigned a student teacher. Participants who are serving in the fall semester of 2015 as a cooperating teacher will provide technical assistance and support to aspiring educators during and beyond the school day. Teachers will use coaching, mentoring, presenting, and facilitating skills to develop the intern/student teacher s competencies in learning to teach. Participants will use the five reflective communication skills: setting outcomes, listening and responding, developing a range of interactive strategies, developing mediational questioning, and integrating segments into whole conversations. Participants should work with student teachers to increase knowledge of curriculum, pedagogy, classroom management, organizational skills, and an understanding of evaluation.
