Jazz and Jazz Radio Veteran Steve Williams to Return to Local Airwaves on KCPW PRESS RELEASE September 28, 2015 (Salt Lake City) KCPW Public Radio (88.3 & FM) announced today that longtime radio host Steve Williams will be bringing jazz back to the local airwaves. Williams, who has been a fixture of the local public radio soundscape for over 35 years, will host a weekly, four-hour block on KCPW called Jazz Time With Steve Williams. The program will predominantly focus on music but will also include interviews, live performances, history, and a local jazz and musical calendar of events. It will air Sundays from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, beginning October 18. Live streaming of the new program will be found at kcpw.org. "Over the past few months, so many friends, nighttime radio listeners and jazz music-lovers have been asking for this news," Williams said. "I'm very glad to say that jazz is going back on-air with KCPW." KCPW Station Manager Lauren Colucci said that the board and staff were proud that KCPW can provide a home for both jazz programming and the "institution" that is Steve Williams. "Having someone with Steve's knowledge, experience, ability and passion is an incredible benefit," Colucci said. "We are very pleased to have him as part of our team." Early supporters of the new jazz program include the GAM Foundation, Excellence in the Community, and The Garage on Beck. These initial pledges of support have ensured that we can get this off the ground sooner than later. We re grateful that the greater jazz community is getting behind this project, said Colucci.
"The GAM Foundation and JazzSLC is thrilled to have the great voice of jazz in Utah, Steve Williams, back on the air to help promote this extraordinary art form. Jazz music is alive and well in our great state," said GAM founder Gordan Hanks. Steve Williams has a lifelong love of jazz. His father was a horn player in New York, performing with American jazz legends Charlie Parker, Gene Krupa and Joe Venuti, among others. A 35-year veteran of public radio, Williams is a champion of the local jazz scene and a legend in his own right having interviewed the likes of Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and Lionel Hampton, and emceeing jazz festivals around the United States. Williams, said he was "partially coming out of retirement" because he believes it's important for jazz to have a space to flourish, and because of "pleas from night-time radio listeners and encouragement from KCPW." "I retired for three months before KCPW management brought me back out of retirement," Williams said. "One night a week is the right level of commitment for me. It s a great fit, and I am excited to get back into the studio!" Steve and the staff here have gone above and beyond, volunteering their time during this start-up period to take on the new project and ensure its success, Colucci said. KUER General Manager John Greene called the development welcome news. "Steve Williams needs no introduction, we're happy that he'll be back on the air sharing his love of jazz with KCPW listeners," Greene said. To assist the new jazz project, KUER is donating a portion of their jazz library to KCPW. "John and his staff have been very supportive," Colucci said. "And we're finding that same support from within the community as well. The addition of Sunday night jazz not only addresses a programming gap in the market KCPW serves, but it also highlights the station s ability to respond to changing times.
"Our mission continues to be providing the Salt Lake valley and beyond with a variety of quality public radio programming, and local programming is a key component," Colucci said. KCPW currently produces and broadcasts five local programs: Behind the Headlines, Both Sides of the Aisle, The Bottom Line, Downtown SLC, and The Hinckley Institute Radio Hour. Plans to expand upon this are in the works. "KCPW is in the midst of a renaissance and the energy and passion at the station right now reminds me of my early days in broadcasting," Williams said. That was when sheer determination and the love of it all put things together. That s part of the fire behind this whole deal for me - I like being a part of something being built, of something new. "Jazz is just the tip of the iceberg." said Wasatch Public Media Board Chair Paul Bruno. "We ve been collecting ideas as we ve gone along this past year. Steve has some great ideas too. As community support for the station continues to grow, our capacity to serve the community will grow as well. Other Weekend Programming Changes at KCPW The upcoming launch of Williams's new jazz show comes as the station is in the midst of a weekend shuffle with the cancellation of two of KCPW's Saturday programs: Bob Edwards Weekend and Wits. Both programs will stop airing on KCPW in early October, the result of their cancellation at the national level. KCPW Program and Operations Director Jesse Ellis said that listeners would likely feel the loss of Edwards in particular. "He's a public radio icon a giant," Ellis said. No future plans for Bob Edwards have been released, but fans of Wits will be glad to hear that the show's creators are looking at "what a Wits 2.0 might become."
In addition to Bob Edwards Weekend and Wits, two other programs will drop from KCPW s line-up: the weekly Tech Nation and the weekly History Hour from the BBC. The rest will remain on the schedule. Along with the addition of Jazz Time with Steve Williams, listeners can expect a few more new programs to be added to the schedule. Jesse s done an incredible job searching out compelling shows that will complement existing programming, said Colucci. I think our audience will be pleased with the final result. New programs confirmed so far include: Interfaith Voices : The nation s leading, independent, weekly, religion news magazine on public radio, fostering interfaith understanding by providing engaging conversation about religion, across many traditions and beliefs. The program explores how faith intersects with culture, public policy, and the news of the day. As the nation's only public radio show exclusively about religion, it is a vital source of knowledge about how religious belief shapes our world. Maureen Fiedler is the host and creator of Interfaith Voices. She has been involved in interfaith activities for more than three decades as an active participant in coalitions working for social justice, racial and gender equality, and peace. Her special interests lie at the intersection of theology and public policy. She holds a Ph.D. in Government from Georgetown University. The New Jazz Archive : Hosted by longtime jazz composer and musician, Jeff Haas, The New Jazz Archive is a weekly public radio series exploring the stories and sounds of jazz's place in American life. Curious about jazz but don t know much about it? According to the show's website, "most of today s jazz programming assumes its audience already loves jazz; the Achilles heel of the music and the reason why jazz audiences are now smaller and older than ever. This series began with the understanding that jazz often needs a proper introduction and seeks to open people s ears to the music. They don t just assume jazz is important they show why through compelling interviews with some of the music s big thinkers, vibrant biographies and
carefully-crafted playlists that represent the full gamut of jazz s rich history. And because they use storytelling as their approach to the music, if you re a person who likes a good story, you ll probably like this show. You might even end up a jazz fan in the process." KCPW will also take the hour-long versions of two of their existing programs which were previously broadcast as half-hour programs: With Good Reason, a weekly examination of a wide range of topics with leading scholars; and Says You!, public radio's weekly comedy game show - and one of America s longest running quiz shows - for those with a love of language. The new schedule will be posted at the end of this week on KCPW s home page - kcpw.org - and will go into effect on Monday, October On-air since 1992, and broadcasting from the Denkers studio on Library Square in the heart of Salt Lake City, KCPW 88.3 FM and FM is a member-supported, community public radio station. Owned by Wasatch Public Media, a Utah nonprofit corporation, KCPW reaches over a million people, with a signal that covers the Salt Lake Valley and portions of adjacent counties. Live streaming, news, and station information can be found at kcpw.org. Contact: Roger McDonough rmcdonough@kcpw.org office: , ext 203 mobile:
