8 Getting Started with Blackboard Getting Started with Blackboard What is Blackboard? Blackboard is Merced Community College s Internet learning environment. It can be used to access class assignments, notes, study guides, and more. Students use the Blackboard system when taking a fully online course, and when taking a hybrid course that combines oncampus and online learning. What Do I Need to Access Blackboard at MC? You need a Blackboard account and a computer with Internet access to use Blackboard. A high-speed connection is recommended, but not required. Dialup access will work for everything except streaming video and downloading large files. Also, be sure to have the latest version of your Web browser to get the best access possible. How Do I Get a Blackboard Account? Your Blackboard account is created automatically when you register for an online or hybrid course. How Do I Find My Blackboard Account? You can log on to Blackboard with a username and password issued by Merced Community College. This is the same username and password that you use for the Merced College Web Portal. Your Blackboard username is also your WebAdvisor username. If you do not know your username, follow these instructions: 1. Go to WebAdvisor ( and click on Students. 2. Click on What is my username Visit our Web site at 8

9 Getting Started with Blackboard 3. Type your Last Name and either your SSN or your 7 digit student ID number. Click submit. 4. Write your WebAdvisor username here: For most students, the initial WebAdvisor/Blackboard username is their first name and their last name separated by a dot instead of a space. The password for Blackboard is their birth date in six digit format, MMDDYY. Your password in Blackboard will continue being your birth date even if you change your WebAdvisor password. If this does not work for you, refer to the Student Help Desk at or contact Student Help Desk at , myhelp@mccd.edu. Be ready to provide your Social Security Number and College ID number to verify your identity. Note: Your Blackboard password is not the same as your WebAdvisor password. Make sure you keep both of these pieces of information separate, and safe. 15 Basic Navigation for Blackboard CE 6 Getting to Know the Blackboard Learning System The Blackboard Learning System is software that allows educational institutions to create and host courses on the Internet. Courses created with this software can serve as entire online courses or serve as a supplement to traditional classroom courses. To use the Blackboard Learning System, you need an Internet connection. You must know how to use an Internet browser, have basic word processing skills, and have basic computer file management skills. You are not required to know HTML or computer programming. Taking an online course can be similar to taking a traditional classroom course. Although you do not meet in a physical location, you can use this program to view course material, reading lists, and goals presented by your Section Instructor. You can also complete assignments and quizzes, and then submit them to your Section Instructor for evaluation. After your Section Instructor has evaluated your assignments and quizzes, you can view your marks. More importantly, you can interact with other Students and your Section Instructor through communication tools that simulate face-toface interaction. You can use an electronic mail feature, post messages in online discussions, or chat in real time with others in your course. In the Blackboard Learning System, you use various tools to perform these tasks. A tool is a function in this software that allows you to perform specific activities. The following types of tools are available: Course Tools Course Tools allow you to access course material, complete quizzes and assignments, and communicate with others. My Tools My Tools allow you to monitor your own progress. You can view your marks and track your activities in a course. You can also make your own notes about course material that you want to focus on. Note: The Section Instructor decides which tools to use in a course, so some tools may not be available. Visit our Web site at 15

16 Basic Navigation for Blackboard CE 6 Expand and Collapse Menu Area Click on the two arrows pointing either left or right in order to expand and collapse the menu area. Home Page The Home Page is going to contain materials that the professor wants you to see. The Home Page screen is the first screen of the Course Content tool. Depending on how the course was designed, you can access the following from the Home Page screen: Files. Files contain course material, such as course requirements, lessons, or reading lists. Content Links. Content links are links to items in other course tools. For example, if there are Internet addresses in the Web Links tool, you can access the addresses by clicking content links to them. This allows you to access a variety of content from a central location. You are not required to go to each course tool to access different content items. Content Folders. Content folders are used to further organize course content. For example, if course content is organized chronologically or by topic, you may see several content folders, each containing the appropriate material to be used at a specific time or for a certain subject area. A content folder can exist within another content folder. Visit our Web site at 16

17 Basic Navigation for Blackboard CE 6 Announcements When we click on the course, the home page displays. If there is an announcement, a popup page displays any new announcements your instructor has posted. It also sometimes displays system announcements with news about the Blackboard system. An announcement popped up welcoming you to Blackboard CE 6. Your professor can choose to have the announcements pop up or chose to have you just go look at the announcements. Assessments The Assessments tool may include the following: Quizzes: A quiz is an online test that Students complete and submit for marks. The marks are recorded in Grade Book. Surveys: A survey is an online questionnaire that Students complete and submit anonymously. A survey is not worth marks but will be recorded as Complete in Grade Book after it is submitted. Surveys allow Students to give feedback or opinions. Self tests: A self test is an online test that Students complete and submit for marks so they can assess their understanding of course material. The marks are not recorded in Grade Book. Visit our Web site at 17

18 Assignments There are two types of assignments: Basic Navigation for Blackboard CE 6 Text: A Text assignment requires Students to submit their assignment by entering text in the Assignments tool, attaching files, or doing both. Students can enter text directly on the assignment screen. However, if Students are expected to submit a large amount of text or if they need to supplement the text with other material, they have the option to attach files. Web Site: A Web site assignment requires Students to submit a ZIP file containing linked HTML files that create a Web site. Students specify an entry point for their Web site and use relative links to link all pages. Calendar Calendar allows you to view and create dated reminders about events. Entries can be viewed for a day, week, or month. Course members can create course-related entries that are viewable to all course members. All users can create personal entries that are not related to any course but are for personal reminders. These types of entries are private. You can access Calendar from the My Blackboard screen or from Course Tools in a course. Chat The Chat tool allows you to communicate in real time with other users in the course. You can use Chat to engage in conversations with all users or selected users. You can use the Chat tool's Whiteboard to draw objects, enter text, import images, and create slide shows that can be viewed in real time by other users. Discussions The Discussions tool allows your professor to create topics relevant to the course where students enrolled in the course can post and reply to messages. Your professor can assign grades for participation, just as they would in a classroom course. Learning Module Learning modules contain related course content that is organized to specify a learning path. A learning path is meant to guide you through the content in order to help you achieve the learning module's objectives. EXAMPLE: A learning module may contain four content items. The first item may be an introduction and overview of the content in the learning module. The second and third content items could be links to articles and web sites with information about the course. The fourth content item may be an assignment pertaining to the information in the articles and web sites. There could also be a link to a Chat room where you and other Students could post questions and comments about the learning module's content. Visit our Web site at 18

47 Posted SEXUAL HARASSMENT I. INTRODUCTION Education Code 212.6(b) requires the adoption of a policy statement setting forth the District's commitment to provide an educational and work environment free from unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct or communications constituting sexual harassment. II. PURPOSE It is the intent of the Governing Board to deem as unacceptable any form of sexual harassment. Such conduct undermines the integrity of the classroom and/or the employment relationship or work/academic environment. Conduct constituting sexual harassment will not be tolerated in the District It is understood that this Policy is not intended to infringe upon academic freedom except to the extent provided by law. III. DESCRIPTION The policy applies to all aspects of employment and the academic environment, including but not limited to classroom conditions, grades, academic standing, employment opportunities, scholarships, recommendations, disciplinary actions, and participation in any community college activity. All District employees who violate this policy may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination in accordance with applicable college procedures, education code sections and/or collective bargaining agreements. Students who violate this policy may be subject to disciplinary measures up to and including expulsion in accordance with board policies and college procedures. Non-employees, such as sales representatives or service vendors are also covered by this policy and may be subject to corrective measures. The District is concerned about the rights of the accused as well as the accuser and shall afford due process rights accordingly. Definition Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal, visual or physical conduct of a sexual nature, made by someone from or in the work or educational setting under any of the following conditions: 1. Submission to the conduct is explicitly or implicitly made a term or condition of an individual's employment, academic status, or progress; 2. Submission to, or rejection of, the conduct by the individual is used as a basis of employment or academic decisions affecting the individual; 3. The conduct has the purpose or effect of having a negative impact on the individual's work or academic performance, or of creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work or educational environment; or 4. Submission to, or rejection of, the conduct by the individual is used as the basis for any decision affecting the individual regarding benefits and services, honors, programs, or activities available at or through the educational institution. This definition encompasses two kinds of sexual harassment: 1. "Quid pro quo" sexual harassment occurs when a person in a position of authority makes educational or employment benefits conditional upon an individual's willingness to engage in or tolerate unwanted sexual conduct. 2. "Hostile environment" sexual harassment occurs when unwelcome conduct based on sex is sufficiently severe or pervasive so as to alter the conditions of an individual's learning or work environment, unreasonably interferes with an individual's academic work performance, or create an intimidating, hostile, or abusive learning or work environment. The victim must subjectively perceive the environment as hostile, and the harassment must be such that a reasonable person of the same gender would perceive the environment as hostile. Sexual harassment can consist of virtually any form or combination of verbal, physical, visual or environmental conduct. It need not be explicit, nor even specifically directed at the victim. Sexually harassing conduct can occur between people of the same or different genders. The standard for determining whether conduct constitutes sexual harassment is whether a reasonable person of the same gender as the victim would perceive the conduct as Visit our Web site at 47

48 Posted harassment based on sex. The determination of whether an environment is hostile is based on the totality of the circumstances, including such factors as the frequency of the conduct, the severity of the conduct, whether the conduct is humiliating or physically threatening, and whether the conduct unreasonably interferes with an individual's learning or work. Environmental An academic or work environment that is permeated with sexually-oriented talk, innuendo, insults or abuse not relevant to the subject matter of the class. A hostile environment can arise from an unwarranted focus on sexual topics or sexually suggestive statements in the classroom. An environment may be hostile if unwelcome sexual behavior is directed specifically at an individual or if the individual merely witnesses unlawful harassment in his or her immediate surroundings. Implementation This policy assigns ultimate responsibility for implementing the sexual harassment policy to the District Affirmative Action Officer. He/she shall also be responsible for insuring that other policies and procedures developed related to sexual harassment support this policy. IV. RETALIATION It is unlawful to retaliate against an employee or student who makes a complaint of sexual harassment, who communicates with or contacts District Compliance Officer(s) or regulatory agencies, or who is a potential witness or participates in any manner in a sexual harassment investigation, hearing, or proceeding.
