BASIC ORIENTATION INFORMATION Sample Course Tour: A Video Tour of Moodle 2 is available for you to review if you have any questions getting started with Moodle. There is a link provided on the Moodle log-in page as well as from within each of your online courses in the "Important Links Block". LOGGING ON: Please note that it is imperative that you log in immediately on the start date of your class. The web address for your class is: (please note that www. is not part of URL) ID AND PASSWORD: Your Moodle login and password is the same as it is in WebAdvisor. The ID is set up as follows: first initial + last name + last four digits of Datatel ID number (all lower case) Password: Our default password changed on December 15, If you were placed on our records after that date, your default Moodle password is initially composed of the first initial of your last name capitalized+the second letter of your last name+six digits of your birthdate. For Example: John Smith, , born January 5, 1985 would have: Username: jsmith9877 Password: Sm (If you enrolled at SCC prior to December 15, 2011, the default password is first two characters of the user s last name with the first character capitalized followed by the last four digits of their Datatel ID number. In our example, John Smith s default password would be Sm9877). To reset your password: 1. Go to the Stanly website at 2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the WebAdvisor button on the bottom right of the page 3. Scroll to the bottom of the page 4. Click on What's My User ID? Type in your last name and your SS#. Click submit. 5. Your user name will appear - then click on the Back button on the top of the page - your STUDENT ID number will appear in the box indicated. 6. Go back to the WebAdvisor homepage - click on Reset My Password. 7. Enter your USER ID and 7 character Stanly Student ID #. (If you only have a 5 or 6 digit number ID -then add zeros in front to make 7 digits.) P a g e 2

8. On next screen -enter information on next screen - First 4 digits of SS#, Date of Birth, Preferred address zip code, Mother's maiden name. 9. On the next screen - enter new password (Must be 6-9 characters in length - Have at least one upper case letter, one lowercase letter and a number.) Now confirm your new password and Submit. If for some reason you are unable to log-in after attempting to reset your password, you will need to contact the helpdesk. REQUIRED PROGRAMS Before getting into Browser Settings, there are two programs that you will need to download from if you haven t already: Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player Both of these are available for free on the Adobe home page via the following icons: After clicking on the links follow the directions to download and install them to your computer. BROWSER SETTINGS There are a variety of different browsers that you can use to view your Moodle Course. With any browser we recommend that you update to the latest version if you begin to have trouble in your course. Listed below are some additional comments and tips for each of the most common browsers. Mozilla Firefox: Mozilla Firefox (Firefox) is currently the most stable and reliable browser to use with Moodle. If you are having trouble with an up-to-date version of another browser, we recommend that you install a current version of Firefox if you are having trouble viewing anything in your class. Firefox can be downloaded safely at the following web address: In addition to acquiring the latest version of the browser you will also need to: 1. Install plug-ins for a PDF Reader and a Flash Player. Probably the simplest way to do this is to click on the Add-ons tab at the top of the Mozilla homepage where you downloaded Firefox and then search for Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player (These will probably already be displayed since the plug-ins are listed in alphabetical order). Just click on Add to Firefox and P a g e 3

then Install Now when the pop-up window appears. 2. You will also need to disable the pop-up blocker for your Moodle course. Simply go to one of your Moodle courses and then: a. Go to Tools > Options b. Click the Content tab. c. If you have Block pop-up windows checked, you will need to click Exceptions and then enter moodle.stanly.edu/moodle as the address of the website and click allow 3. You will also need to make sure that Cookies are enabled in Firefox by clicking on Tools > Options, clicking on the Privacy tab and under History either: a. Set Firefox will: Remember history (this sets no restrictions on cookies) or b. Set Firefox will: Use custom settings for history, place a check in the box beside Accept cookies from sites and click on the Exceptions button beside this choice and add moodle.stanly.edu/moodle to the Address of web site: and click on Allow Internet Explorer: 1. In Internet Exporer 9 you will want to check for the installed plug-ins for a PDF Reader and a Flash Player. Probably the simplest way to do this is to click on: a. Tools> Manage Add-ons b. From here you can check to see if Shockwave Flash Object (from Adobe) and Adobe PDF Link Helper are installed. c. If not, click on Find more toolbars and extensions at the bottom of the page and use the Search the Gallary search box at the top of the page to locate and install these Add-ons. 2. To check the Pop-up Blocker in Internet Explorer go to moodle.stanly.edu a. Click Tools > Pop-up Blocker b. Either Turn Off Pop-up Blocker or Always Allow Pop-ups from this Site 3. You will also need to make sure that First-party cookies are enabled for your course to work correctly. To do this: a. Click Tools > Internet Options b. Click the Privacy tab c. Click Advanced d. Place a check in Override automatic cookie handling P a g e 4

e. Make sure First-party Cookies is set to Accept f. Click OK Opera: By default, the latest edition of Opera does not show the built-in html editor in Moodle. Unfortunately at this time, it is not recommended that you use this browser for your online class. Google Chrome: 1. By default, the latest edition of Google Chrome does not show the built-in html editor in Moodle, however this can be overcome by following these steps: a. Click on Customize and control Google Chrome button in the upper right corner of your browser. Select settings. b. Select Extensions c. Click browse the gallery or Get more extensions >> depending on whether you have installed any extensions into Chrome previously d. Type ie tab into the search box at the top of the page e. Click on IE Tab by ietab.net f. Click ADD TO CHROME, and also click add if a dialog box appears g. This will add an icon beside your address bar that looks like this: h. By clicking on this icon from within your Moodle class you are basically masking Google Chrome to look like Internet Explorer in order to be able to view some of the features of the class. You will be prompted with the following question after clicking on the IE Tab icon: i. Click on No j. In order to turn off IE Tab and switch back to your regular Chrome browser click the x to the far right of the IE Tab address bar as shown here: P a g e 5

k. Please note that this may not clear up all problems with Google Chrome, but it does enable the HTML editor to appear and depending on the content of your course, may be all you need to do. 2. Provided you have installed Adobe Reader and Flash Player, Google Chrome should automatically access these programs when needed, so no additional plug-ins should be necessary. 3. In order to allow pop-ups in Moodle in Chrome follow the following steps: a. Click Customize and Control Google Chrome b. Settings c. Click on the "Show Advanced Settings..." at the bottom of the settings page. d. Under Privacy select Content Settings" e. Scroll down within the Content Settings window to "Pop-ups" f. Select the Manage Exceptions button g. Under the Hostname pattern there will be a blank h. In the blank where it says Add a new hostname pattern type: moodle.stanly.edu i. Click Done 4. Generally the default setting of Chrome should be fine for allowing Cookies in your Moodle course. Safari: 1. In order to use Safari in Moodle, you will need to mask it as either Internet Explorer or Firefox similar to the process required with Chrome. In order to do this follow these steps: a. Click Edit b. Select Preferences c. Choose Advanced d. Check the box for P a g e 6

e. When you close the window, Develop will now appear on your menu bar at the top of your browser window. f. Click Develop g. Select User Agent h. Select Firefox and the WYSIWYG editor will appear in your Moodle Class. 2. For Cookies and Pop-up window you will need to: a. Click Edit b. Select Preferences c. Choose Security Popup blockers and anti-virus: Popup blockers work in the background while you browse the Internet. When they detect a popup window that may be an unwanted advertisement, they automatically close the window. Unfortunately, they also inhibit Moodle from performing properly. If you are unable to view Discussion postings, Quiz windows, and download links, then search your hard drive for any software with "pop-up" in the name and disable it. Note: Norton Internet Security 2010 has an automatic ad-blocking setting that must be disabled for Moodle to perform properly. Disable this function within Norton. To disable pop-up blockers for Moodle, search your hard drive for any software with "pop-up" in the name. Disable it or set your Moodle server as an allowed site. Some popular pop-up killers include: Pop-Up Stopper Pop-Up Defender Pop-Up Zapper Pop-up blocking functions are included in some antivirus, internet security, personal firewall, and browser programs. Disable the relevant setting in the program or set your Moodle server as an allowed site. Examples of programs that include pop-up blocking functions include the following: P a g e 7

Norton Internet Security Zone Alarm Pro Google Toolbar Yahoo! Toolbar MSN Toolbar AOL 8.0 and later Safari browser Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2 ICQ Toolbar Mozilla browser Netscape browser Firefox browser Disable Firewall Software Applications Some firewall applications prevent consistent and continuous communications between the student computer and the course web sites. Some popular firewall software applications include: Norton Firewall McAfee Firewall ZoneAlarm AVG Comodo Disable the firewall software application before connecting to the course or configure it to allow access to the Moodle site. Setting Up Your Profile One of the first things you will want to do once you have logged in will be to set up your user profile. You can do this By first clicking on the arrow next to "My profile settings" and select Edit profile link in the settings block to the left. Then you can begin to edit your profile. Be sure and take a second to verify that your profile has a current picture, and list your interests, this feature will really allow you to better get to know you classmates early on. Technical Problems If you have trouble getting into Moodle or accessing any of the features, make sure you have made the adjustments described above. If you are still having problems, contact the SCC Help Desk at: (704) or contact via at P a g e 8
