1 OTTAWA ONLINE Graduate Business Programs BUS Advanced Leadership Theory Practice Spring 2 Term: March 31 June Course Description Covers theory practice related to organizational leadership. Topics include organizational system thinking, living systems theory, leadership capacity development, other advanced leadership theories. Includes application of theory to a variety of workplace settings. This is a fully online, twelve week course. We will not meet face-to-face at any time. Course Prerequisites None Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Examine internal external factors that impact the organization, Apply leadership skills to eliminate a problem reduce errors in the workplace. Instructor Bio Dr. Berg s experiences are primarily in higher education, entrepreneur/business owner, corporate education/consulting in both domestic global environments. University academic experiences include full professor & department chairman, Northern State University; Director of Arizona State University Computer Institute, Dean of Academics at Western International University-Phoenix campus London Engl campus, multiple Professor-of-the-Year awards, textbook author. Entrepreneurial experiences include

2 owning operating small businesses: small manufacturing company, retail store, assisted care home. Dr. Berg is a national global consultant seminar leader through C-Level Management Inc. with multiple years as a seminar leader for American Management Association. Seminars have been conducted in the USA, Canada, Taiwan, Engl Russia in corporate/business/government environments, on these topics: information technology, strategic planning & management, C-Level strategic planning, information management, marketing, leadership, power & politics. C- Level business consulting involves corporations such as Encana Energy Corp. (Canada), Honeywell, Otis Elevators, Powertrusion International. He obtained his Doctorate Degree from University of Nebraska, Masters Degree from University of North Dakota, Bachelors Degree from Minot State University. Overview of the Course Readings Activities We will be reading most of Senge s book. Please read the designated pages in Senge s book prior to responding to the discussion thread for the week. Senge s text is classically dated, with his leadership structure being a major part of many leadership structures learning organizations. To provide a current view of how learning organizations are being implemented, we will supplement with articles pertaining to contemporary practice of leadership. Students will select one article per week from current periodicals based upon the topic of discussion for that week. Your weekly leadership articles will come from respected periodicals describing how this week s content is being implemented. Participation In fully online courses, student participation takes place in the text-based, asynchronous discussion forum. Participation is crucial in enhancing the learning environment within an online course. All students are expected to be active participants in group discussions at least 3 times per week. In this course, 50 % of your grade is based on your participation in our community conversations. More information is available in the Competency Assessment section below as well as in the Participation Policies Expectations portion of the Info & Policies section of our cyberclassroom in Blackboard. Assignments Assignments fall under three categories: (1) Senge s textbook which is the basis for the course weekly discussions; (2) Articles each week provide a supplement to the textbook material; (3) Leadership Project Paper designed for you to implement Senge s content within your own. The Competency Assessment section below provides a summary of each assignment. Competency Assessment You will have several opportunities to demonstrate your knowledge understing of the principles taught in this course. The primary means of evaluating your work will be through practical application of the material. In the event that you have difficulty completing any of the assignments for this course, please contact me immediately. My address telephone number are listed on this syllabus. Please remember that

3 instructors do not romly assign grades. Students earn their grades everyone has the same opportunity to earn a good grade. Please refer to the Course Materials section of the cyberclassroom for complete details regarding the activities assignments for this course. The following is merely a summary. Discussion contributions (50%) Each week you must submit (post) a discussion comment to the weekly discussion topic. Then, after reading the postings made by other students, you must reply to a minimum of two of your peers posts. Your responses must be substantive. Simply stating that you agree or disagree is not substantive. You need to add your explanation as to why you feel as you do. Furthermore, only comments related to the weekly subject will be given credit. All of your postings must be on different days--- meaning that you must be online at least three times/days per week. Your first posting must be made by Wednesday of each week to ensure that others have time to respond to your comments. Online weeks run from Monday to Sunday. Please refer to the Participation Policies Expectation in the Info & Policies section of this course for important information about how the Discussion Board (Course Discussions) works what is expected of you. Weekly articles (25%) article each week. Please post the Internet address in the discussion thread so you re other students can access your article. Enter into the weekly discussion thread/forum five major points you learned from the article how the content contributed to your view of leadership the learning organization. Quality is defined as an article whose content was based upon an expert/ practitioner in the field, which usually means it contains has some solid research to back up the concepts presented, rather than articles based solely on opinion. Specifically, the articles must: relate directly to topic being discussed; involve that week s concept of leadership each week; have good, solid content (usually is two+ pages); be from 2002 or later unless there is evidence the content fits into the classic category; post the internet link to each article each week so other class members can read the article in full. Leadership Project Paper (25%) The leadership project paper involves developing a Leadership Plan based upon Senge s five learning disciplines with regard to a leadership problem-concern-issue within your business/company you are working for. Additionally, you should incorporate the content of the weekly leadership articles you have presented in this class. You are the Leader are in a position to teach other leaders how to solve problems through the implementation of Senge s five disciplines. The following sections are to be included within your Leadership Project Paper:

4 An introductory page or two: provide an overview or context of the specific problem you are going to solve within your company using Senge s methodology the supplemental content found in your weekly leadership articles. Exp upon your problem solution using o system thinking concepts; o personal mastery concepts o mental models concepts o shared vision concepts o team learning concepts Develop a solid, summary paragraph or two at the end of your paper. Accompanying your Leadership Project Paper must be a slide PowerPoint presentation you are going to use as a guide in teaching the contents of your paper to other company leaders. All papers are to be written in APA format. Submit your papers/powerpoints via /attachment during the last week of class. 8 Grading Scale Grade Percentage Points A 90 to 100% B 80 to 89% C 70 to 79% D 60 to 69% F < 60% <418 Important Policies All course-specific policies for this course are spelled out here in this syllabus. However, additional university policies are located in the Policies folder in the Info & Policies section of Blackboard. You are responsible for reading understing all of these policies. All of them are important. Failure to underst or abide by them could have negative consequences for your experience in this course. Late Assignments I accept late assignments for up to one week after the due date. You will lose 20% of the total value of the assignment for any assignment turned in after the due date. Editorial Format for Written Papers All written assignments are to follow the APA writing style guidelines for grammar, spelling, punctuation. This online course includes information regarding the APA style under Writing Research Resources in the Resource Room on the course menu in Blackboard. Academic Integrity Plagiarism cheating will not be tolerated at any level on any assignment. The reality of cyberspace has made academic dishonesty even more tempting for some, but be advised that technology can will be used to help uncover those engaging in deception. If you ever have a question about the legitimacy of a source or a procedure you are considering using, ask your instructor. As the University Academic Council approved on May 29, 2003, The penalty for plagiarism or any other form of academic dishonesty will be failure in the course in which the academic dishonesty occurred.
