1 Human Resources Management NURS 5304/6304/ Credit Hours Course Description Personnel and human resource issues including labor management in nursing and health care settings. Course Objectives At the conclusion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Assess the resources necessary to provide services or products in the healthcare industry. 2. Develop strategies and plans pertinent to the allocation of scarce health care resources. 3. Demonstrate professional accountability for competent nursing administrative practices in the application of healthcare resource allocation incorporating professional nursing values. 4. Discuss global factors affecting healthcare resource allocation. Testing Procedures All course requirements are submitted online. Grading Procedure Presentation 30% Paper 40% Discussion Board (3 modules of 30% questions - 10% each module) Total 100% Grading Scale A = B = C = D = F = <70 Assignments and Projects Scholarly Paper One formal scholarly paper is due in this course. The assignment requires the student to identify and explore a contemporary issue related to human resource management in nursing organizations. The student is required to examine the current healthcare literature and synthesize current research findings within the text of the paper. A minimum of five current (within the last five years) journal articles pertaining to the selected topic are to be used and incorporated in the paper. The journals used should be relevant to human resources and health care management. The student is required to select and apply one method of human resource management theory. All papers use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 5th ed as the reference for all formal written papers.

3 Presentation of Scholarly Paper must be completed. This will be in PowerPoint format and posted in the course per instructions. Discussion Board Participation All students are expected to actively participate in online class discussions. Discussion topics/questions will be posted and will require students to respond with their own comments and will also require students to respond to at least one other students comments. There is a distinct topic/question for each module. If a student is unable to fulfill this requirement for any reason, he/she should notify the instructor prior to the class and make alternative arrangements. The aim is to encourage interaction among students and faculty, not simply to present information. Students are required to respond to all discussion questions. Student responses to discussion questions must be substantive, that is, thoughtful and analytical. Because the WebCT system has its own way of formatting material posted on the discussion feature, the student will not be expected to strictly follow APA guidelines for online submissions. However, the student is held to academic standards of writing style and the use of proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. Additionally, tactfulness is expected and required of all responses. Discussion participation must take place during the allotted time frame for each topic and module. Participation in each module is worth 10% of your grade. No response or participation in a particular modules topic/question will result in no points for that particular module discussion. Merely responding to the topic/question but not responding to another students comments for any particular section will deduct 2% (i.e., maximum allowable for that module would be 8%). It is strongly recommended that students communicate with one another and the course professor inside the D2L-based course. For specific directions for professor communication, see specifics from the course professor. The course professor should respond to comments and questions within a 48 hour timeframe. If there is a time when the course professor will be unavailable, the professor will post a note for all students to see and read specific details. It is recommended that all students create a homepage introducing themselves. This is probably the best way for everyone to get to know you. Punctuality Students are expected to: Check the course calendar for the due dates of assignments. Check the course bulletin board frequently for announcements. Course Ground Rules The student is expected to: Learn how to navigate in the D2L system. Participate by responding to all discussion questions. Keep abreast of course announcements. Use the assigned college or university address as opposed to a personal e- mail address. Contact the instructor if unclear about assignment expectations. Address technical problems immediately.

4 Guidelines for Communications Always include a subject line. Remember without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your s. Use of emoticons might be helpful in some cases. Use standard fonts. Do not send large attachments without permission. Special formatting such as centering, audio messages, tables, html, etc. should be avoided unless necessary to complete an assignment or other communication. Respect the privacy of other class members. Discussion Groups: Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new topic. Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of others ideas. Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks. Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks. Be positive and constructive in group discussions. Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner. Chat: Introduce yourself to the other learners in the chat session. Be polite. Choose your words carefully. Do not use derogatory statements. Be concise in responding to others in the chat session. Be prepared to open the chat session at the scheduled time. Be constructive in your comments and suggestions. Library The Tennessee virtual Library at is available to all students enrolled in the Regents Degree Program. Links to library materials (such as electronic journals, databases, interlibrary loans, digital reserves, dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps, and librarian support) and Internet resources needed by learners to complete online assignments and as background reading must be included in all courses.
