1 OTTAWA ONLINE Spring 2 08 March 31 st - June 21 st 2008 PYC Counseling Theories Course Description Examination of theories of personality development and therapeutic processes. Consideration of techniques for counseling applications and professional consultation. This course is designed to present: - key principles of selected theoretical models of personality/human behavior, - related clinical interpretations and intervention treatment methods As it is a foundation course in the process of professional development in the area of counseling, attention will also be given to developing professional skills, in concert with the identified goals of graduate education, in general, and professional counseling, in particular: This is a fully online twelve-week course.we will not meet face-to-face at any time. Course Prerequisites No prerequisites, however it is recommended that this course be taken during the first nine credits in the masters degree program. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Identify the historical and current knowledge of counseling theories and approaches. Identify and define major theories, concepts, and principles of counseling. Compare and contrast the various counseling and psychotherapy theories with the appropriate applications to specific individual challenges and concerns. Apply such skills as critical evaluation, understanding, integration, and appropriate application of the presented counseling and psychotherapy approaches. Demonstrate an overall focus on typical cognitive and behavioral areas with possible transitions into psychopathology areas. Methods and Procedures of the Online Course Readings and Activities: The primary reading material will be from the required textbook. Other reading material will be provided as specially prepared documents supplied within PYC 7922 Counseling Theories 2

3 our cyberclassroom. These additional readings, prepared by the instructor, are to assist in better understanding the specific theories, theorists and approaches. Competency Assessment You will have several opportunities to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the principles taught in this course. The primary means of evaluating your work will be through practical application of the material.in the event that you have difficulty completing any of the assignments for this course, please contact me immediately.my address and telephone number are listed on this syllabus. Participation In fully online courses, student participation takes place in the text-based, asynchronous discussion forum in this course, 36 % of your grade (36 points) is based on your participation in our community conversations. More information is available in the Assignments Overview below as well as in the Participation Policies and Expectations portion of the Info & Policies section of our cyber classroom in Blackboard. Assignments Overview Please refer to the Course Materials section of the cyber classroom for complete details regarding the activities and assignments for this course. The following is merely a summary. Discussion Board contributions points (Three per 3 points per week) Each week you must submit (post) a discussion comment to the weekly discussion topic. Posts must adhere to APA style & format. Then, after reading the made by other students, you must reply to a minimum of two of your peers posts. Your responses must be substantive. Simply stating that you agree or disagree is not substantive. You need to add your explanation as to why you feel as you do. Furthermore, only comments related to the weekly subject will be given credit. All of your must be on different days---meaning that you must be online at least three times/days per week. Your first posting must be made by Wednesday of each week to ensure that others have time to respond to your comments. Online weeks run from Monday to Sunday. Please refer to the Participation Policies and Expectations in the Info & Policies section of this course for important information about how the Discussion Board (Course Discussions) works and what is expected of you. Open-book Final Exam (30 points) The exam consists of multiple choice and essay questions. All answers can be found within the course textbook. Students are encouraged to work on their final exam beginning Week One. Research Paper (4 (Proposal) + 5 (Reference Page) + Paper (25) = 34 points total) Each student will choose a specific detail of a counseling theory. Expectations: Papers are to be no less than 8 pages and no more than 10 pages. PYC 7922 Counseling Theories 3

4 Students must use the guidelines set forth by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5 th edition). Students are encouraged to review the Research Paper Guidelines document. Paper is expected to be supported by at least five different published sources (at least two of these must be from professional journals). Assignments At-A-Glance Assignment Qty. Late Assignments Assignments will not be accepted after the due date. Editorial Format for Written Papers All written assignments are to follow the APA writing style guidelines for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Academic Integrity Academic dishonesty includes: Cheating on examinations, plagiarism, and the supplying of false information pertaining to the learner s academic program. Another form of academic dishonesty is using the same paper or significant parts thereof for more than one class without permission from all instructors involved. It is recognized that it is a normal part of professional development to have a common theme of interest that may be explored in different classes. However, each paper should present an appreciable expansion of the thought, research, and interpretation beyond prior papers on the topic, with special appreciation for the specific assignment goals of the current class. Cheating will not be tolerated in this course. The instructor considers plagiarism a form of cheating. Plagiarism is defined as presenting the work of another as one's own. More than four consecutive words from a source other than the writer constitute plagiarism when the source is not clearly identified in appropriate (APA) documentation format. As per the Ottawa University Student Handbook, any learner caught cheating will receive an "F" for the course - no exceptions.
