8 8 Transport in Sunnhordland Transport in Sunnhordland Sunnhordland lies between Bergen and Haugesund. The town of Stord is the regions communication hub. Express boats to and from adjacent municipalities or on their way to and from Bergen and Stavanger, call on Leirvik on Stord. So do the express busses. New tunnels and a number of bridges makes it easy to travel in the region. Ferries ply the fjords and the many express boats provide fast and comfortable transport. It s been said that people in Norway first settled in Sunnhordland s region. This was because the Christianization of Norway started right here, more precisely at Moster in Bømlo. Before that time, the Vikings ruled the west coast villages. There have been many battles along the coast, and you can hear and see more about that especially in Fitjar, Bømlo and in Etne. In Sveio, it is worth a visit to Ryvarden cultural lighthouse. A visit to Moster at Bømlo will gives you an insight into the history of Sunnhordland. Drive to Leirvik, and pay a visit to Brygga 11 and taste a delicious 3 course of fresh sea food. Day 1 2 Itinirary Rosendal - Lake Myrdalsvatnet Breakfast at the hotel. Hike to Lake Myrdalsvatnet. Quality gravel road (toll road) for 5 km all the way to Lake Myrdalsvatnet. At 4 km you will pass Midtseter mountain farm which was in use until Bring lunch to Myrdalsvatnet. A good alternative would be to stay for the whole day, rent a boat and go fishing. You should also take the opportunity to enter the beautiful beach at the end of the lake to experience the wilderness atmosphere there. The lake has a good population of average sized trout (up to 2 hg). Sporadically trout of 1-2 kg may be caught. There are two good quality rowing boats for rent at Lake Myrdalsvatnet. There is a path further along the lake and up to Vetledalen valley, 320m AMSL where you will be closer to the Bondhusbrea Glacier. The Bondhusbrea Glacier is often mentioned as the best site for glacier climbing in the country.
