4 Global Space Exploration Conference Washington, D.C., May Welcome Messages 1.1 Message from the Presidents On behalf of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), we welcome you to the Global Space Exploration Conference (GLEX) and to Washington, D.C. We are excited to be hosting this important international meeting on space exploration policy, science, and technology. IAF and AIAA are committed to supporting the international relationships that will enable exploration of outer space. The GLEX programme was designed to encourage the sharing of programmatic, technical, and policy information, as well as collaborative solutions, challenges, lessons learned, and paths forward among all nations with the desire to explore space. The plenary sessions will cover the future of space exploration from a space agency s point of view, perspectives and capabilities for human and robotic exploration, as well as the means necessary to enable a political consensus. Two keynotes will discuss the exploration of Mars, the Moon and asteroids. The technical programme includes more than 350 paper and poster presentations that span all aspects of exploration: asteroid mining, legal issues, new business models, technology roadmaps, and more. The event features several informal networking activities such as coffee breaks and receptions at the hotel and Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum where attendees can meet and solidify new contacts and future partnerships. This conference would not be possible without the leadership of the International Programme Committee, the commitment of the invited speakers, session chairs, authors, and presenters, and the support of the AIAA and IAF staff. We thank everyone who worked to develop and manage this joint event. We hope you enjoy your time at the conference and in the U.S. capital, and thank you for your participation! Berndt Feuerbacher President International Astronautical Federation Michael D. Griffin President American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics 2

5 1.2 Message from the International Programme Committee Co-Chairs Space exploration brings significant benefits to people on Earth and today s global economic challenges highlight the importance of continuing to explore. We are excited about the opportunity provided by GLEX to host an international dialogue on the issues that matter the most. The GLEX programme has been designed to bring together leaders and decision-makers within the science and human exploration community engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, educators, agency representatives and policy makers. Each panel discussion and technical session will enable us to discuss recent results, current challenges and innovative solutions. The programme contains several opportunities to learn about how space exploration investments provide benefits as well as discuss how we can increase those benefits through thoughtful planning and cooperation. We look forward to meeting you this week in Washington, D.C.
