1 An Invitation to Apply: Michigan State University College of Nursing Director for the PhD Program THE SEARCH Michigan State University College of Nursing is seeking an academic leader to shape and grow the PhD program. The College of Nursing is committed to expanding and enriching graduate education in the environment of a research-intensive university with a health sciences mission. The ideal candidate will have a program of extramurally funded research and experience teaching graduate students and mentoring doctoral students. An interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and faculty development is also desirable in this position. The College currently ranks #12 in terms of receipt of NIH research funds among ranked colleges/schools of nursing in the US. This is a full-time, tenured (twelve-month) faculty position with a distribution of effort across administration, teaching and research. The Director reports to the Associate Dean of Research for the College of Nursing. RESPONSIBILITIES The Director s responsibilities will include: Providing administrative, educational and curricular leadership for the PhD program in the College of Nursing. Assuring appropriate student, faculty and program evaluation. Teaching in his/her area of expertise. Collaborating with the Associate Dean for Research to coordinate external funding, publications and scholarly activities of PhD students in an environment of research integrity Mentor faculty in doctoral teaching and guidance of students. Represent the College at the university, community and national levels. QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and professional experience: PhD in Nursing or related field; PhD in Nursing preferred; graduate degree in Nursing required. Eligible to obtain RN license in Michigan. Administrative experience in research and/or graduate studies is preferred. Research program with a successful record of funding and scholarship. Record consistent with appointment as tenured Associate or Full Professor. -1-

The College of Nursing embraces the concept of access to education and has developed several pathways for individuals to enter and progress through its educational programs. The College has invested in distance education and virtual technology that enhances learning and student/faculty interaction. The College is committed to the generation of knowledge through research and the education of future clinical nurse researchers. The faculty competes favorably for national funding to support research programs and they are engaged in translating their findings into clinical practice. The College opened the BOTT Building for Nursing Education and Research in October of Through a gift of $7 million from The Timothy and Bernadette Marquez Foundation, a $7.5 million research infrastructure grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and broad based donor support from friends and alumni, the building project has become a reality. The NIH research infrastructure funds were dedicated to the construction of two floors of research space, including space for the Nursing Research Center. The building creates a highly visible presence for nursing in the university s health science campus. It supports the College's growth as a national research leader, and will help the state address the nursing shortage. The BOTT Building is connected by a bridge to the College of Nursing building in the Life Science complex. The first floor houses classrooms, the student commons and lounge, student services, external relations, conference rooms, an atrium and reception lounge. The second and third floors provides space for PhD students and College of Nursing researchers. The space also includes the Nursing Research Center, seminar rooms, meeting space, a PhD student collaboratory, a research collaboratory, interview rooms and 60 modular pods that serve as workstation. A new Physical Activity Laboratory is available for testing, interventions and measurement related to physical activity research. The Nursing Research Center (NRC) provides pre-award, post-award, and professional development support to faculty researchers and PhD students. Staff support includes a research center coordinator, two grant administrators, a research secretary, statistical support and writing/editing support. The NRC and the CON Research Committee sponsor a visiting scholars program, faculty development seminars, a writing group and mentoring for junior faculty. An external research mentor program is also available to faculty. The NRC faculty and staff also coordinate the College s Undergraduate Student Research Program. CON Academic Programs The College of Nursing offers the following academic programs: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Programs Traditional Program: For first-degree undergraduate students This full-time, four-semester, upper-division option is designed for students who have completed a minimum of 56 credits and required prerequisite courses. Accelerated Second Degree BSN Program: For students already holding a bachelor's degree or higher in another field This option is for those who have already earned a bachelor's degree or higher in another field are eligible to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing on an accelerated timetable in this full-time, 14-month option. RN-BSN Program: For registered nurses holding an associate degree or diploma in nursing and currently hold an unrestricted RN license This web-based option offers flexibility for registered nurses who seek to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The program includes clinical practice in community health and leadership at sites convenient to students. Other Baccalaureate Level Programs ACCESS Program - The ACCESS program provides financial and educational support to motivated high school students who are admitted to MSU as a pre-nursing student. Nurse Scholars Program - The Nurse Scholars Program gives high-achieving high school students the opportunity to earn conditional admission into the College straight out of high school. Study Abroad Program - Study Abroad provides students a chance to grow professionally while learning about other people, places and cultures, and broadens their education and perspective on the world. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Programs o MSN Program with Nurse Practitioner Concentration: Students may choose specialization in Adult/Gerontological (ANP/GNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). o MSN Program with Adult/Gerontological Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)-Education Concentration o MSN Program with Nurse Anesthesia Concentration Post Masters Programs: Preparing Advanced Practice Nurses for National Certification in the areas of: o Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Program o Family Nurse Practitioner Program o Adult/Gerontological Clinical Nurse Specialist Program DNP Program: A DNP program admitted its first class of students in Fall This is a post-masters program for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) with national certification. -4-

5 In a dynamic and changing healthcare system, the Nursing Research Center in the MSU College of Nursing is committed to advancing nursing science. College of Nursing faculty are known nationally for research in the management of chronic illnesses and healthy lifestyles to improve the health and well being of individuals and their families. The College welcomes faculty with a variety of research programs and current areas of excellence in scientific and interdisciplinary research currently include: Cancer Gerontology Obesity and Associated Conditions Physical Activity Collaborative Research Opportunities In addition to the individual programs of research developed and pursued within the College, CON faculty and doctoral students are involved in several interdisciplinary and team focused initiatives. MSU Trifecta Initiative The Trifecta initiative brings together Intellectual Leaders from the Michigan State University Colleges of Communications Arts & Sciences, Engineering and Nursing. Faculty members and graduate students are forging intellectual and operational directives aimed at advancing the delivery of health services for underserved populations. The initiative allows faculty members to reach out to create genuine collaborations between the three colleges and foster the full potential of cuttingedge interdisciplinary research at MSU. MSU-Sparrow Health System Center for Research and Innovation (CFIR) Many centers for innovation are integrated into university hospital systems. This partnership is unique in that it brings together a major research university and a community based hospital. Together, Michigan State University s intellectual capital and Sparrow Health System s community-based clinicians collaboratively develop, test, implement, and evaluate innovative approaches to high quality safe healthcare that neither partner could do without the other. MSU Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) MSU-CTSI exists to support ALL types of community engaged, translational research efforts that involve any of MSU s broad array of affiliated local, state, national and international community partners. The MSU-CTSI s activities span a number of levels of support and expertise. These resources are provided to rapidly facilitate the safe and ethical conduct of a variety of translational research efforts both within, and beyond MSU s physical boundaries. 6 PhD Program: MSU s PhD in Nursing caters to talented, dedicated and high-achieving RNs who are seeking to make an impact as nurse scientists and leaders in academia and research. The program is built upon the cornerstone assumption that research and evidence-based nursing practice contribute to the science of healthcare, addressing priority health problems faced by individuals, families and communities. Two options offer alternative pathways to the PhD in Nursing: o Fast-Track Option: this option for BSN-prepared students allows transition directly into the PhD curriculum o Conventional Option: this option permits students to begin the doctoral curriculum after obtaining a Master of Science in Nursing degree CON Students College of Nursing student enrollments by program for Fall 2013 were: Program Enrollment BSN (pre-licensure- traditional) 248 BSN (pre-licensure-second degree) 53 RN-BSN Studies 35 MSN: Nurse Practitioner 119 CNS/Educator 36 Nurse Anesthesia 24 DNP 6 PhD 11 Total: 532 CON Faculty and Staff As of Fall 2013 the College had 89 faculty members and 32 staff members. Accreditation The MSU College of Nursing baccalaureate and master s programs are currently accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). A successful reaccreditation (for the full 10 year maximum) was achieved in Research Research is an integral part of the College's mission. College of Nursing scientists generate new knowledge and translate findings into practice that enhance the safety of the patient experience and improve patient and family outcomes. Faculty members and PhD students seek external funding for to support their programs of research and scholarly inquiry from a variety of sources including the various agencies of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USDA, pharmaceutical companies, professional organizations such as American Association of Colleges of Nursing, American Cancer Society, Midwest Nursing Research Society and various foundations such as American Nurses Foundation, Oncology Nursing Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In 2013 the MSU College of Nursing ranked #12 in terms of NIH-funded research out of 75 ranked colleges/schools of nursing in the US, up from #20 in the previous year. -5-
