1 AN INVITATION TO APPLY: Dean of the Kirkhof College of Nursing Grand Valley State University Grand Rapids, Michigan THE OPPORTUNITY Grand Valley State University ( invites applications for the position of Dean of the Kirkhof College of Nursing (KCON) ( available July The KCON is ideally situated in the midst of Grand Rapids quickly developing, billion dollar health care corridor. KCON is close to a cancer research institute, a molecular medicine laboratory, a heart care center, a children s hospital, two major hospitals, a physical rehabilitation hospital, and a cancer treatment center. In addition, Michigan State University Medical School will open its Grand Rapids campus in the corridor in Grand Valley State University is an integral partner with these and multiple other healthcare systems, agencies, and institutions of higher education in the region. The College itself operates a community-based, academic, nurse-managed center. KCON offers baccalaureate and graduate programs and is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Housed along with the College of Health Professions in a new, state-of-the-art facility, KCON emphasizes active -1-

2 programs of scholarship, innovation, and outreach, and a philosophy that values liberal education and interdisciplinary collaborations. QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE The new Dean must possess: An earned doctoral degree in Nursing or a related field from an accredited institution; An established record of demonstrated leadership, superior teaching, exemplary scholarship and distinguished service in a college/university setting. Eligibility for licensure as a registered nurse in Michigan; Preference will be given to those candidates who have: A terminal degree in Nursing. A demonstrated commitment to academic excellence. An ability to develop, articulate, and accomplish a constructive vision for the College in cooperation with faculty. A record of successful collaboration with a health care community. At least five years of full-time teaching experience in a four-year college or university. A strong record of scholarship commensurate with appointment at the rank of professor at the university. At least five years of successful administrative experience in higher education or a health care setting. Experience in the acquisition of grants, traineeships, or other external funding is desirable. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES As the chief academic officer for the College, the Dean is responsible for: Promoting the Vision, Mission and Values of the University through the activities and programs of the College, and working with other University administrators to assure the wellbeing and success of the University. Providing leadership and vision for the College; working with faculty and staff to create an academic, cultural and physical environment conducive to scholarship, intellectual vitality, and learning. Advancing the diversity of the College s faculty and student body. Developing and implementing creative approaches to advance the research enterprise of the College of Nursing. Establishing and nurturing a supportive work environment; and fostering an active program of mentoring faculty. Strategically developing and efficiently managing the College s budget. -2-

3 Procuring external funding for the College to support its many programs and activities and assisting faculty in obtaining external grants and research support. Developing effective enrollment strategies for an increasingly competitive and rapidly changing environment. Guiding and mentoring faculty in matters of promotion and tenure. Advocating strongly and effectively on behalf of the College of Nursing in a wide variety of internal and external venues. Effectively interacting with and taking a leadership role in the West Michigan health care and education arenas. Guiding the College through accreditation processes. Developing and implementing a successful recruitment plan to bring qualified faculty into the College. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE Although it is understood that no individual will possess all of the following characteristics in equal proportion, the ideal candidate for the Dean position will exhibit: An understanding of, and commitment to, the Vision, Mission and Values of Grand Valley State University and the Kirkhof College of Nursing. An ability to develop and articulate a compelling shared vision for nursing, and the demonstrated ability to put this vision into practice. An ability to work creatively and effectively with health care leaders and professionals, and to represent the College and the University in that environment. An ability to support fundraising for and expand resources within the College by developing and maintaining effective relationships with current and potential donors. An ability to provide administrative leadership, vision and experience in a diverse environment, characterized by collegial management, mentorship, inclusive decision-making and effective communication skills. An ability to create and nurture a supportive work environment within the College that utilizes transparent processes. An ability to develop a collegial relationship with faculty that supports shared governance and encourages the development of a cohesive workgroup. An ability to effectively represent and advocate for the College of Nursing within the University community, working in collaboration with the other Colleges and administrative units within Grand Valley State University. 5 ACADEMIC PROGRAMS The Kirkhof College of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.); B.S.N. completion with an option for a B.S.N./M.S.N. articulated program for Registered Nurses and an M.S.N. option for Registered Nurses with degrees in other disciplines; a B.S.N. with a B.S.N./M.S.N. articulated option for students with degrees in other disciplines; Master of Science in Nursing, M.S.N.; and a combined Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Business Administration, M.S.N./M.B.A. The Baccalaureate Program Nursing majors must complete a core of courses in the humanities and the social, physical, natural, and health sciences that provide a strong scientific and humanistic foundation upon which clinical nursing courses are based. Before graduation, students must also have completed the skill and general education requirements of the university. The baccalaureate curriculum provides learning experiences that combine the liberal arts and basic sciences with nursing theory and clinical practice. Students are prepared to provide nursing interventions for individuals, families and communities at a beginning practitioner level. Students are scheduled for clinical practice at a variety of community hospitals and health care agencies, including home care and ambulatory settings. The program stresses health promotion and illness prevention, as well as care of the sick. The ability to think critically to solve problems, formulate concepts, make judgments, analyze, summarize, and form valid conclusions is emphasized. This focus provides the student with the characteristics necessary for professional development and personal enrichment in a changing society. Program for Second Degree Students The Kirkhof College of Nursing offers a B.S.N. and an articulated B.S.N./M.S.N. option for persons with a baccalaureate degree in another discipline. This option is designed for part-time or full-time study. The required plan-of-study can be shortened by transfer of credits. RN/BSN Program The College of Nursing offers programs of study specifically designed for registered nurses to obtain a B.S.N. and M.S.N. The programs are designed for part-time or fulltime study. Individual needs and appropriate alternatives for program planning are examined. Options for part-time study make degree completion more accessible to employed nurses. -5-

6 Masters of Science (M.S.N.) in Nursing Program The Kirkhof College of Nursing offers a program of graduate study leading to a master of science in nursing degree (M.S.N.). The program also prepares students for roles in nursing administration, nursing education, or advanced practice nursing. The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) option prepares students for a blended role that incorporates Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist roles. Students choosing the Advanced Practice Nurse functional role will select one of the following clinical emphases: Adult/Elderly, Child, Family, Women's Health, or Mental Health. All students must complete a scholarly project (thesis, nursing protocol, research practicum, or comprehensive examination). The curriculum provides learning in three components: nursing theory and research, clinical emphasis, and functional role preparation. Learning takes place in the classroom and in supervised practica that encourage individuality, critical analysis, and collaboration with other members of the health care team. Within the functional roles of education, administration, and advanced practice, graduates of the master's program are prepared to: Improve health care by assuming leadership roles in collaboration with other professionals and consumers. Provide nursing care in a specialty area of practice by applying advanced knowledge synthesized from nursing and related disciplines. Contribute to the advancement of the profession. R.N. to M.S.N. Option for Nurses with Non-Nursing Bachelor's Degrees The College of Nursing offers an M.S.N. option for registered nurses with a non-nursing baccalaureate degree. This program option is designed for part-time or full-time study. The required plan-of-study can be shortened by transfer of credits. Students in this program option must be admitted to Grand Valley State University before seeking admission to the College of Nursing. Students are accepted on the basis of GPA and completion of required undergraduate courses in the Kirkhof College of Nursing. Post Master's Certificates Courses of study leading to certificates for accomplishments beyond the M.S.N. level include: Advanced Practice Nursing Nursing Education Nursing Administration -6-

7 Combined M.S.N. / M.B.A. Program A combination M.S.N./M.B.A. is offered in conjunction with the Seidman College of Business. This unique program is designed to prepare graduate nurses for professional opportunities in health care delivery systems, including nursing leadership, management and policy administration. ACCREDITATION The baccalaureate and master s programs in nursing are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The reaccredidation site visit occurred in November 2006 and the College expects to be awarded 10-year accreditation. The University has suburban and urban campuses in Allendale and Grand Rapids and centers in Muskegon and Holland. Grand Valley s Allendale campus is located halfway between Grand Rapids and Lake Michigan. The KCON is located on the University s Robert C. Pew Grand Rapids Campus in the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences. Grand Valley State University was founded as Grand Valley State College in It became Grand Valley State University in Grand Valley employs 734 full-time -7-

8 tenure-track faculty members. Of these, 81.6% hold terminal degrees, 60.8% are tenured, 14.3% are minority background, and 43.4% are female. In Fall 2006, enrollment totaled 23,295 students, including 3,717 graduate students. A total of 5,627 students live in University-owned housing, while approximately another 3,000 live in privately-owned housing adjacent to the Allendale campus. The mean ACT score for entering freshmen is Minority students comprise 11.5% of the total student body. The mean age is 21.5 for undergraduates and 31.9 for graduate students. Grand Valley is extraordinary for a school of this size in its dedication to liberal education as well as international and professional education. Grand Valley State University has been selected by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top masters degree-granting universities in the Midwest and by Princeton Review as a best college. The University has a Carnegie Foundation classification of Masters I. Grand Valley State University s main campus is located in Allendale and is situated on 867 acres of plateau and ravines on the west bank of the Grand River in rural Ottawa County. The campus houses the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Interdisciplinary Studies and most of the undergraduate programs. The Robert C. Pew Grand Rapids Campus is comprised of three separate sites in downtown Grand Rapids: the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, the Richard M. DeVos Center, and the L.V. Eberhard Center. The Center for Health Sciences is a stateof-the-art facility that includes a model patient suite, a simulation center with several METI simulators, a motion analysis biomechanics laboratory, as well as other wellequipped science laboratories. The Center is home to the health-related programs. Access to the library s collection of 664,000 volumes and 8,000 current periodicals is provided on-line from each campus and center, or from one s home or office computer. Grand Valley State University features a rich academic environment focusing on excellent faculty, outstanding students, hands-on research opportunities and nationally ranked graduate programs. Grand Valley offers over 200 areas of study, including 68 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate programs. A liberal arts emphasis teaches students critical thinking and problem resolution. 9 GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN With a metropolitan population of 1.3 million, Grand Rapids is the anchor of the economically resilient Golden Triangle of West Michigan. A vibrant city, Grand Rapids is a very livable community with much to recommend it: The Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra is recognized nationally. Grand Rapids boasts its own ballet, civic theater, and opera companies, yet a person can watch anglers try to land salmon downtown in the Grand River. There are many private and public colleges in the metropolitan area, including Grand Valley State University. Grand Rapids was named an All-American City three times, was named by Fortune magazine in 1998 as one of the Top 10 Best Cities for Business in the U.S., and in 2004, was named as one of America s Most Livable Communities by the Partners for Livable Communities. Grand Rapids is one of the country s most philanthropic communities. Grand Rapids has over $500 million in new attractions, meeting facilities and recreational venues. A new art museum is being completed this spring. There are over 60 restaurants and nightclubs in the downtown area, including Michigan s only AAA Five Diamond restaurant. There are 28 public golf courses with many only fifteen minutes from downtown, making Grand Rapids one of the top golf cities in the U.S. Grand Rapids is a three-hour drive from Chicago and a 35 minute drive from the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. Grand Rapids is also easily accessed by air: the Gerald R. Ford International Airport is the 86 th largest airport nationally. Grand Rapids also has semi-professional baseball, hockey, basketball and arena football teams. In the last couple of years, Grand Rapids has been host to dignitaries such as Bishop Desmond Tutu and Nobel Peace Award winner Lech Walesa as well popular culture fixtures such as Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Emmy Lou Harris, and Willie Nelson. -9-
