Active teaching and learning experiences quickly integrated students, faculty, and staff into the community, improving health and well being in the Willamette Valley. A traditional bachelor of science in nursing program is offered currently on the Monmouth campus. Monmouth Campus Vision Statement OHSU at Monmouth is a locally, nationally and internationally recognized leader in nursing education. Students, faculty & staff collaboratively create a supportive learning environment that strives for excellence through diversity of experience, educational innovation, and evidence- based practice. Academic Nursing Programs Founded in 1926 the OHSU School of Nursing has played a key role in training nurses for nearly a century. With a history of academic and clinical excellence and a commitment to teaching, healing, community service and research, the school provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to learn in a health care and research- oriented environment. Oregon Health and Science University School of Nursing offers undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, continuing education, and virtual education opportunities. A variety of courses and program pathways are available to fit student needs. With five regional campuses, a virtual campus, and community partnerships the School of Nursing is able to offer different educational opportunities throughout Oregon. Undergraduate Programs Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program This generalist program prepares students the graduate for R.N. licensure and also gives interested students the necessary credentials to pursue a graduate degree in nursing. At the completion of the Bachelor of Science Nursing curriculum, the B.S. degree is awarded and graduates are eligible for professional registered nurse licensing examinations. The availability of this program to interested individuals is greatly enhanced by articulation agreements with a number of community colleges in 2001 and 2006 thereby forming the Oregon Consortium for - 6-

Nursing Education (OCNE) - through a shared, competency- based curriculum culminating in a bachelor s degree; the agreements also provide for shared admissions criteria, progression and graduation standards across all participating schools. Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program In order to meet the growing demand for nursing education for people who have or will have a bachelor s degree in a non- nursing field, OHSU School of Nursing has reinstated an Accelerated Bachelor s of Science with a major in nursing degree program (ABS). The ABS program is designed to allow those students who currently have or will have a bachelor s degree from an accredited institution with a major other than nursing to take the nursing courses required to get the B.S. with a major in nursing. This generalist nursing program is five quarters of full- time nursing coursework starting summer term on both the Portland and Ashland campuses. This program will prepare the graduate for R.N. licensure and also gives interested students the necessary credentials to pursue a graduate degree in nursing. At the completion of the Bachelor of Science Nursing curriculum, the B.S. degree is awarded and graduates are eligible for professional registered nurse licensing examinations. Baccalaureate Completion Program for RNs The Baccalaureate Completion Program for RNs (RNBS) offers the OCNE curriculum as online courses serving associate degree graduates of OCNE community colleges or associate degree or diploma graduates from non- OCNE schools. All students in the RNBS program must have an RN license. Courses are offered online with occasional voice- to- voice webinars and conference calls. Practicum courses take place as close to the student's home community as possible. Students can do the program on either a part- time or full- time basis. Master s Degree Programs According to U.S. News and World Report, three of the OHSU School of Nursing graduate programs are ranked in the top 10 nationally: Nurse Midwifery (#1), Family Nurse Practitioner (#6) and Masters in Nursing (#7). Advanced Nursing Practice Programs The School offers programs leading to various advanced practice master s degrees in nursing in two years or with a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in three years. Specialty areas include: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Specialty: Nurse practitioners are an integral part of today s healthcare system. NP s provide high quality, cost- effective care that results in a high level of patient satisfaction. Nurse practitioners practice in all 50 states and have become recognized and respected members of the healthcare community. Increasingly, people are choosing nurse practitioners as their regular healthcare providers. Family Nurse Practitioners work in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, private practices, independent nurse practitioner practices, and schools of nursing. In Oregon, Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) deliver critically important services especially to rural and medically underserved populations. Family Nurse Practitioners apply advanced knowledge and clinical skills in many facets of health care: providing prenatal care and family- planning services; providing well- child care; obtaining medical histories and performing physical examinations; diagnosing, treating and monitoring acute and chronic - 7-

conditions; ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic studies. In Oregon FNPs practice autonomously, bill independently for their services, and have prescriptive rights. Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Specialty: The Adult- Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) program prepares students to manage adults, including the frail elderly, with complex chronic, acute and critical conditions. The skills gained will allow graduates to provide a spectrum of care ranging from disease prevention to acute and critical care management, including stabilizing the patient s condition, preventing complications, restoring maximum health and/or providing palliative and end of life care. Nurse Anesthesia Specialty: The OHSU Nurse Anesthesia Program prepares registered nurses to become advanced practitioners in the field of anesthesia where they administer general and regional anesthesia to surgical and obstetric patients. Students earn a Master of Nursing degree upon completion of the 27- month program. Most courses are offered face to face on campus. Core courses may be offered as an on- line or hybrid format. Two anesthesia pharmacology courses are offered as on- line courses. The Nurse Anesthesia Program educates registered nurses with critical care experience to the advanced practice specialty of anesthesia. The program provides nurse anesthesia students with a solid foundation in scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and professional accountability. Students develop the knowledge and skills to deliver safe anesthesia care using sound clinical judgment to diverse patients across the lifespan. Nurse- Midwifery (NM) Specialty: The Nurse- Midwifery (NM) program of study has been designed to offer a combination of graduate core courses, advanced practice core and NM specialty courses. This combination prepares our students for practice in the field and simultaneously provides a framework for clinical leadership and policy that is critical for any midwife in practice. The NM program of study provides NM students with a solid foundation in the scientific basis for clinical practice. Students develop the knowledge and skills to provide safe nurse- midwifery care using sound clinical judgment to care for women in the context of her family. Students in this program are eligible for certification after completing two years and receiving the master of nursing degree. They may also elect to complete an additional year of education and receive the doctor of nursing practice degree. Either option offers a practice- focused curriculum that will support the career trajectory for those pursuing expert clinical practice and leadership as a certified Nurse- Midwife. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Specialty: The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program prepares graduates for advanced specialty practice with a dual emphasis on intervention through psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. PMHNP's intervene with vulnerable populations and promote mental health across the lifespan. They work with children, adolescents, adults, and older persons in a variety of settings, including community mental health clinics, public health departments, hospitals and outpatient mental health clinics, health maintenance organizations, government facilities, schools of nursing, and independent private practice. Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Specialty with Primary Care (PNP- PC) and/or Acute Care (PNP- AC) Tracks (Portland Campus only): The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program prepares graduates for advanced specialty practice with a dual emphasis on intervention through psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. PMHNP's intervene with - 8-

vulnerable populations and promote mental health across the lifespan. They work with children, adolescents, adults, and older persons in a variety of settings, including community mental health clinics, public health departments, hospitals and outpatient mental health clinics, health maintenance organizations, government facilities, schools of nursing, and independent private practice. The PNP- PC practices wherever pediatric patients are in need of primary care. The focus for the PNP- PC is an ongoing relationship with the child and family in the delivery of comprehensive health care and coordination of health services. Accordingly, course work concentrates on foundational knowledge of child growth and development, health promotion and disease prevention behaviors and interventions, and common acute/chronic illnesses and/or conditions. The PNP- AC does not practice only in what is traditionally considered to be acute care geographic settings, such as an intensive care unit (ICU) or an acute care in- patient unit or hospital, but may practice wherever pediatric patients are acutely ill, physiologically unstable, technologically dependent, and/or vulnerable to complications. The focus for the PNP- AC is the delivery of restorative care, characterized by rapidly changing clinical conditions. Accelerated Bachelor s to Master s Program (Portland Campus only) The School of Nursing also offers an Accelerated Bachelor s to Master s program in three areas: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Specialty Nurse- Midwifery (NM) Specialty Psychiatric Mental Health (PMHNP) Specialty Master of Public Health Program The School of Nursing s (SON) Online Primary HealthCare and Health Disparities (PHCHD) Track of the Oregon Master of Public Health (OMPH) program is based upon the concepts and principles of primary healthcare. The World Health Organization (1978) defines primary healthcare as "essential healthcare based on practical, scientifically sound and socially acceptable methods and technology, made universally available to individuals and families in the community through their full participation and at a cost that the community and the country can afford to maintain at every stage of their development in the spirit of self- reliance and self- determination". In this view, primary healthcare is both a philosophy of healthcare and an approach to providing health services. By emphasizing improvement in primary healthcare accessibility and quality for underserved populations, this degree program prepares graduates to tackle health disparities in a unique way. With this degree students are prepared to assume clinical leadership roles in a variety of settings, including but not limited to community health centers and health maintenance organizations, community agencies and health departments, and official and voluntary health agencies and organizations. Graduates are able to ensure the quality of implemented clinical and community care activities, act as a resource for the development of innovative and expanded responses in clinical and community care, coordinate care with regional and county offices, interface with all services involved with the care of patients, and provide counseling and education for families and patients receiving care. - 9-

Master of Health Systems & Organizational Leadership Program The Health Systems and Organizational Leadership program prepares nurses for roles in a variety of organizational settings from acute care, to long- term care, community care, and beyond. Skills gained will allow nurses to lead in formal executive and front- line positions, quality improvement, project management, or other positions where systems- level management and leadership is needed. Nurses will learn about complex dynamic healthcare delivery systems, creating sustainable organizations, how to leverage the legislative and regulatory environment, and steward financial and human resources through effective care delivery models. Complexity and Quality science will be a central program focus. Students study alongside faculty with expertise in complexity and quality science, systems innovations, and outcome data analysis. Students will be paired with faculty in leadership positions as they develop skills in leadership, team building and sustaining, analysis of system wide initiatives and data based decision- making. The program will provide opportunities for interprofessional education, collaboration, and practice. Master of Nursing Education Program The School of Nursing offers a Master of Nursing (MN) degree in nursing education, with a clinical focus in one of 3 areas: mental health nursing, community health nursing and adult- gerontological nursing. This program is designed for the bachelor's- prepared nurse who is interested in pursuing a career in teaching nursing, either as a faculty member in a school of nursing or in staff development positions. Oregon Health & Science University is a national leader in innovations in nursing education. The widely acclaimed Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education partnership among OHSU and 8 community colleges is a model of an innovative competency- based curriculum incorporating best practices in teaching and learning, and provides one laboratory for graduate students in nursing education. Doctoral Programs Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) represents the highest degree in nursing practice. Graduates receive additional preparation to expand practice in breadth and depth as well as coursework and mentorship to facilitate leadership and practice- related scholarship in their professional career. Implemented at OHSU in 2007, the DNP program builds on the advanced nursing practice masters programs and prepares leaders in a culture of innovation and inquiry. The Post Master s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is designed to prepare leaders to drive the application of evidence to promote excellence in nursing practice and health care. As a practice- focused doctoral program, innovation and inquiry are central to graduating DNP - nurses prepared in leadership to identify, develop, and evaluate solutions to the most troubling challenges found in clinical practice and health care. In addition to the competencies for the MN degree and specialty, DNP graduates are expected to meet DNP program competencies: Engage in advanced nursing practice in a professional, evidence- based, skilled, and ethical manner; Influence health and health outcomes of individuals, groups, and populations through clinical inquiry; and - 10-

Influence health policy and systems of health care in the local, regional, state, and international forums. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program The PhD in Nursing is a research- intensive degree to educate nurse scientists. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are supported by coursework and faculty mentorship. The degree can be completed in 3-7 years. Courses are taught in both face- to- face and distance formats, both of which make rich use of OHSU being a health sciences campus with access to laboratories, clinical populations, research centers and advanced technology.
