ECU is warm, friendly and helpful. It s easy to find someone to assist you with your studies. I gained entry to ECU through the Indigenous Student Intake Test (ISIT). My high school English Teacher helped me contact ECU and set up the test. To assist with my study I received two scholarships through ECU. I ve undertaken teaching pracs at four different schools. Getting real experience and the chance to apply the theory I ve learned in lectures in a classroom setting is so valuable. With the experience and knowledge I ve gained at ECU, I am even more determined to be a positive influence for Indigenous students in schools. Elisha Yarran ECU Education graduate 5

6 ECU is helping me make a difference. I chose to study Teaching at ECU because I wanted to become a role model for Indigenous children and help them achieve their goals. My experience at ECU was extremely positive. The lecturers were always very helpful and I received a lot of support with my studies. I was lucky enough to win the Governor General s Indigenous Teacher Scholarship, which helped with living costs and provided me with a mentor teacher. 7 Kurongkurl Katitjin Kurongkurl Katitjin, pronounced koor-ong-kurl cut-it-chin, is a Nyoongar phrase meaning coming together to learn. Kurongkurl Katitjin, ECU s Centre for Indigenous Australian Education and Research, plays a key role in ECU s commitment to Indigenous Australian education and support. The role encompasses support for whole-of-university activities and programs, as well as specific teaching, research and support activities in relation to Indigenous Australian people and their cultures. Kurongkurl Katitjin is located on the Mount Lawley campus and is an important cultural and social hub for Indigenous Australian students. The beginning of Indigenous programs at ECU date back to 1975, when the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program was established at Mount Lawley campus. For more information visit LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS FOR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ECU s Rock Solid Foundations at the Mount Lawley campus represents the notion of education being the foundation that shapes our future. The Western Australian granite pillars symbolise the foundations upon which one builds during their education journey. The combination of polished and natural surfaces reflects the journey from study to graduation. The seven pillars honour the Nyoongar story of the Seven Sisters constellation and are placed accordingly. Facing north, the pillars indicate the location of the constellation, and as you leave Kurongkurl Katitjin, you see the names of past Indigenous graduates who have led the way, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. ECU s Indigenous programs date back to 1975, when the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program was first established at the Mount Lawley Teacher s College, which is now one of three ECU campuses. Kurongkurl Katitjin, ECU s Centre for Indigenous Australian Education and Research, was established in 1991 and provides support services and programs to meet the academic and cultural needs of Indigenous Australians. In 2011, Kurongkurl Katitjin established ECU s Indigenous alumni, Rock Solid Foundations, to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the first Aboriginal graduate, who was also the first qualified Aboriginal teacher in Western Australia. Pro-Vice Chancellor, Indigenous and Equity, Professor Colleen Hayward AM said from humble beginnings and with a strong foundation in education, ECU has produced over 500 Indigenous graduates from a wide range of disciplines including Teaching, Business, Law, Nursing, Communications and the Arts. ECU s Indigenous alumni is and will continue to be a cohort of Indigenous people who represent leadership, strength, resilience and durability. Kurongkurl Katitjin is a Nyoongar phrase meaning coming together to learn and it certainly embodies the spirit of graduates, past, present and in years to come, she said. Each pillar represents a ten-year block and displays the names of each Indigenous student by year of their graduation, with names colour-coded according to their discipline or area of study. The wave design between each year symbolises the ripple effect and how it builds upon itself to gain momentum, much like ECU s graduates who, over time, have built up a cohort of Indigenous people who have succeeded at University to form ECU s Indigenous alumni community. 7

8 Entry Pathways and Courses At ECU, we believe everyone who is capable and motivated deserves access to a university education. 11 ECU and BOM launch Nyoongar Weather Calendar Edith Cowan University (ECU) and the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) have officially launched the Nyoongar Seasonal Calendar, which shares the traditional weather knowledge of the Indigenous people from the South West of WA. Joining Indigenous calendars from across Australia, the newest edition to the BOM website pays tribute to the expansive weather knowledge of the South West Indigenous population, which dates back thousands of years. ECU Cultural Awareness Officer, Mr Jason Barrow, has worked on Aboriginal cultural projects for more than 15 years, and was the key cultural advisor on the project. His cultural background and experience has allowed him to pick up on the many subtle environmental changes that occur throughout the year, and the relationship this has with our weather patterns. 11
