Making the Monopolist s Product Line Green: The Effects of Consumers Opposing Perceptions of Recycled Content, Material Cost Savings, and the Diseconomies of Scope in Production. We consider a monopolist selling two product variants (ordinary and green) in a setting where consumers are heterogeneous in their willingness-to-pay, perception of recycled content, and likelihood to recycle. Specifically, in our model, some consumers willingness-to-pay for a product variant with recycled content is higher (relative to their willingness-to-pay for an ordinary product), and are more likely to recycle, whereas others associate disutility with a green product variant. The differential (dis)utility associated with the product variants is a function of the firm s quality decision, i.e., the amount of recycled content. Taking into account the recycled material return rate, and the firm s technology and costs with (dis)economies of scale effects, we solve the firm s optimal quality and pricing decisions, and discuss how such decisions drive demand and profit. 20. Aydinliyim, Tolga, Xiangtong Qi 11. Strategic Use of Carbon Reduction Labels as a Marketing Strategy. Environmental considerations have a significant impact on the operational decisions (e.g., sourcing, engineering design, pricing, product line design) managers have to make to maintain their firms competitiveness. Consequently, even the most (traditionally) profit driven managers face new challenges in their pursuit of matching the supply of their firms products with what consumers demand. On the demand side, it is essential for a firm to get a better understanding of consumers preferences for eco-friendly product alternatives while making product line and pricing. Especially when consumers perception of environment-related quality attributes is significant, firms can devise marketing strategies that use such eco-attributes as a signaling device to induce a demand shift from competing products. In this project, we study the competitive implications of providing detailed CO 2 reduction labels on products a policy implemented by some producers such as Tesco, Dyson, and Kingsmill. Specifically, we investigate if such labels can be used to signal the eco-friendliness level of the competitors products to invoke demand. 9 Department of Supply Chain Management, Carey School of Business, Arizona State University 10 Decision Sciences Department, Lundquist College of Business, University of Oregon 11 Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 3
4 21. Aydinliyim, Tolga, Eren Cil 12, Nagesh Murthy. Incentivizing Input Reduction in Product Design vs. Recycling for Supply Chain Coordination. We consider a problem wherein a buyer of structural components made of specialty materials (for example, titanium and its alloys) is faced with the problem of excessive material removal because the forgings provided by the supplier can be times the size of the final weight of the part. These structural parts tend to have a very large surface area per unit weight of the part that is further complicated by angular surfaces. Forgings are considered to be the best option for the forged blanks because of the strength related engineering specifications for the components. The supplier typically does not have an incentive to invest in forging capabilities that can offer more near net shape forgings for these parts. The process technology in the forging industry that is predominantly developed for forging steel alloys is typically not geared for offering near net shaped parts for titanium parts. Further, a large size and a more fin or webshaped geometry of the component coupled with need to forge specialty material (titanium) in a relatively low volume environment leads to only a handful of forging suppliers who can offer this capability. This creates an interesting problem for the buyer to consider how to incentivize the supplier in the presence of limited competition to offer a forging that is closer to the final geometry, in a manner that can make both parties better off. 22. Aydinliyim, Tolga. Disclosing Low Stock Levels and Offering Generous Refunds: Compliments or Substitutes. Earlier research has concluded that the Internet retailer can mitigate strategic purchase deferrals by disclosing low stock levels accurately. I investigate how optimal inventory disclosure results change for retailers that implement flexible return policies and offer sizable refunds.
