I have served on CAUT Equity Committee, have been Affirmative Action Officer at York University for 3 years and have done many persentations on Equity. 3/4

In the coming years, CAUT should - take a leadership and supportive role in encouraging the implementation of the recommendation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada ensuring that universities give attention to the needs and concerns of Indigenous students, faculty members and communities. - encourage and support the collection of data specifically with regard to race, indigeneity, sexuality and other demographic variables to ensure that the goals of educational access and employment equity are addressed. - encourage and support the hiring of indigenous and racialized faculty members and where needed put in place special programs and supports. Carl James is one of the leading scholars in the country on questions of equity. He combines scholarly expertise with a broad and dedicated background in faculty association and CAUT activities, contributions to the broader community, and committed teaching. His research, teaching, and publications focus on issues of racism, youth education, and community health, and he is a very prolific scholar, with 20 books and more than 100 publications, many supported by SSHRC funding. He is one of the most widely read anti-racism scholars in Canada. Last year, in recognition of his scholarly accomplishments, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He has been a stalwart supporter of YUFA, his own faculty association, where he has played a major role in representing the equity concerns of members. His contributions to CAUT over the years have been many, but in particular he was a member and Chair of the former CAUT Equity Committee from He therefore brings a wealth of wisdom concerning the equity needs of the academic labour movement. His love of learning and commitment to social justice spill over substantially into his community contributions. He has served on many boards, given testimony to various committees of enquiry, written reports, and acted as an advocate for the interests of marginalized groups, especially youth at risk in the education system. Carl James brings experience, wisdom, and years of dedicated service to equity and human rights issues. He is an ideal candidate in every way.
