2 THE OPPORTUNITY Marymount University a vibrant Catholic institution and rich community of learners in the liberal arts tradition is undertaking a nationwide search for Dean of the School of Business Administration. 3 Overview Marymount University, founded in 1950 as a two-year women s college by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, is Virginia s only Catholic comprehensive university. Today, Marymount is a coeducational institution serving over 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students, emphasizing liberal arts traditions and Catholic identity. Located in historic Arlington, Virginia, just six miles and a short Metro ride away from Washington, D.C., Marymount offers easy access to the city s diverse political, historical, international and cultural opportunities, including numerous internships and avenues for experiential learning. The main campus is located on 21 verdant, rolling acres and is home to the Sacred Heart of Mary Chapel, the Emerson G. Reinsch Library, the Lee Center, Caruthers Hall, Rowley Academic Building and the recently renovated Gailhac Hall, home to the School of Arts & Sciences, and several other academic buildings and residence halls. In addition to the main campus, Marymount has three other locations. The Ballston Center, two miles south of the Main Campus, is the site of the University s newest construction project. When completed in Summer 2017, this new facility will be the home of the School of Business Administration as well as a number of graduate programs in the School of Education and Human Services. Additionally, it will house state-of-the-art classrooms and faculty offices, as well as mixed-use corporate and retail office space. The second site is in close proximity to the Ballston Center and is home to the Malek School of Health Professions Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy, as well as an entrepreneurial partnership with Marymount and MedStar Health for Physical Therapy. The third location is 12 miles west of the main campus Marymount s Reston Center, a modern classroom and learning environment offering convenient day and evening undergraduate and graduate programs. 4 Common Ground Common Ground at Marymount University is a campus-wide campaign founded on the institution s shared vision and focused on three values: intellectual curiosity, service to others and global perspective. The campaign promotes the entire campus community while serving as a conduit to provide students with experiences that will allow them to share and celebrate the values that unite us. This is Marymount, and this is our Common Ground. For more information, please visit the Common Ground Initiative. Leadership Dr. Matthew D. Shank is Marymount s sixth (and second lay) President. Since taking office on July 1, 2011, he has completed a new, collaborative, university-wide strategic vision; increased enrollment, retention and endowment giving; completed a number of capital improvements; and increased Marymount s profile regionally and nationally. Prior to Marymount, President Shank served as Dean of the School of Business Administration at the University of Dayton. There is a national search underway for Marymount s next permanent Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management. It is expected that the selected candidate will be announced in late November of this year. Currently, Dr. Rita Wong is serving as the Interim Provost & Vice President. She came to Marymount in 1995 and most recently served as the Associate Dean for Graduate & Professional Studies. 4

5 SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION The School of Business Administration (SBA), the largest School in the University, is home to 936 undergraduate and 312 graduate students. With a budget of approximately $4 million, the school s 32 full-time, 45 part-time and adjunct faculty, and staff are committed to teaching and are passionate about helping their students achieve their professional and personal goals. SBA offers three undergraduate, seven graduate and six dual-degree programs. In addition to traditional business programs (e.g., BBA and MBA), the SBA offers innovative degrees in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, and Health Care Management. The dual degree programs allow graduate students unique opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and an increased flexibility in career choice. The school also recently introduced an online MBA program. All of SBA s degree programs place an emphasis on lifelong learning and incorporate competencies in ethics, written and oral communication skills, critical thinking, leadership and team building, and a global perspective. About one third of the SBA students are enrolled in technology programs (information technology, cybersecurity and data science), and these programs are the fastest growing programs in the school and in the university. Marymount s proximity to Washington, DC affords unparalleled access to global corporations, technology firms, government and nonprofit agencies, health care facilities, sports organizations, and financial institutions. These connections offer numerous opportunities for partnerships that include internships, guest lecturers, part-time faculty, thought leadership and external resource development. The School of Business Administration works closely with Marymount s Center for Global Education to provide a variety of opportunities for SBA students to study abroad. With a variety of opportunities for student engagement, SBA prides itself on being student-centered. Whether as a multiple recipient of the Best for Vets award from Military Times, developing the St. Ambrose Society honors program or the strong relationships and mentoring opportunities students have with faculty and industry professionals, SBA is committed to the education of the whole individual. 5

6 SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (continued) Specialty accreditation for the School of Business Administration includes the Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs (ACBSP) and by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). Marymount s Cybersecurity programs have achieved national recognition with their designation as a National Security Agency (NSA)/Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense and the award of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Cybercorp SFS program. Only about 50 universities in the nation have both these recognitions. Since 2005, James Ryerson has led the School of Business Administration. Dean Ryerson, who holds an MBA from Clarkson University, has been an integral part of the Marymount community as a faculty member and administrator since Under Dean Ryerson s leadership, the School of Business Administration has grown along with the University. The school is consistently one of the top part-time MBA programs in the greater D.C. metro area. Dean Ryerson will be stepping down to return to the classroom as a member of the faculty. THE POSITION The Dean of the Business Administration serves as the chief academic officer for the School and, as such, assumes responsibility for strategic leadership and operational management. The Dean reports directly to the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and oversees the areas of faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation; fundraising and community outreach and collaboration; budget management and resource allocation; program and curriculum development and assessment; strategic planning; and maintaining regional, state, and national accreditation. Currently reporting to the Dean are: the Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, three Chairs, the Administrative Assistant to the Dean, and two administrative staff. 6

7 OPPORTUNITIES Major opportunities for the next Dean of the School of Business Administration include: Harnessing the energy, commitment and talents of a dedicated and student-centered faculty and staff to move SBA to its next level of growth and academic excellence. Being a strong and articulate advocate for SBA s faculty, students, staff and mission. Evaluating the programs currently offered by the school and considering strategic additions or substitutions to ensure the programs meet the needs of business and industry. Providing strong leadership through transparent and conclusive communication, strategic decision-making and direction, and faculty, staff and student engagement. Engaging externally by building and strengthening of substantive partnerships throughout the Washington metropolitan area, including those in the corporate, government, healthcare, non-profit and technology sectors. Working with the new Provost, as well as the fellow Deans and Academic Leadership Council, to implement the university s and the school s strategic plan. Beginning to prepare the SBA for the ACBSP re-accreditation process, particularly in the area of student assessment. Continue growth in the cybersecurity field, including the implementation of the Doctorate of Science in Cybersecurity, currently under development. As the number of senior faculty increases, identifying and hiring new faculty who are committed to the mission and values of the SBA and Marymount University. Leading the School s transition from their current space to the brand new Ballston Center; working across the university to coordinate the implementation of those efforts. Working collaboratively with the President and Vice President for University Advancement, engaging in significant strategic fundraising and friend-raising opportunities with individuals, corporations and other organizations. QUALIFICATIONS The President, Provost and SBA community seek a new dean who is a visionary, strategic leader and a person of high energy who: Possesses an advanced degree (with a terminal degree preferred, but not required) from an accredited institution of higher education, and/or substantial business experience in a senior leadership position. Has a minimum of five years experience in academic leadership or administration; in executive positions in the public or private sector; or equivalent experience. Demonstrates a decisive, data-driven and collaborative leadership style; is transparent and clear with all stakeholders; and has a strong desire to interact with students and work collaboratively with faculty. Has significant experience engaging the external (local, regional and national) business and governmental community in the development of mutually beneficial partnerships. 7

8 QUALIFICATIONS (continued) Has the proven ability to leverage those partnerships to the benefit the organization (e.g., student internships and employment, fundraising and friend-raising, marketing and branding, and organizational growth). Has experience with, or an understanding of, issues related to accreditation and emerging areas of potential programmatic growth. Has a strong background in, and understanding of, technology and how it drives today s economy. Is a strong communicator; a passionate and articulate advocate; has excellent interpersonal skills; and listens effectively. Has an understanding of, and strong affinity for, Marymount s mission, vision, and values, including its Catholic identity. 8
