2 THE OPPORTUNITY The next president of the College of St. Joseph will be a dynamic leader who will develop an exciting, expanded vision and academic mission for the college. He/she will build on a solid financial foundation while enhancing the brand of this venerable Catholic institution. THE COLLEGE The Sisters of St. Joseph of Rutland founded the College of St. Joseph (CSJ) in 1956 as a women s Catholic teacher s College. Under the courageous leadership of the College s first president, Sister Mary Matthew McDevitt, CSJ affiliated itself with the Catholic University of America to foster institutional growth and went on to become fully accredited by the New England Association of School and Colleges, Inc. In 1971, the College took another bold step forward when it became coeducational. Today CSJ is a private, career oriented, liberal arts Catholic College that enrolls more than 375 students and is located in Rutland, Vermont. Rutland is Vermont s third largest city with a population exceeding 16,000. Nestled in the Green Mountains, Rutland is known for outdoor recreation accessibility and for its historic charm. More than 100 buildings in downtown Rutland are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Rutland is within short driving distances to Boston (3 hours), Montreal (4 hours), and New York City (4.5 hours). The College of St. Joseph s rural campus has eleven buildings and is situated on 117 wooded acres. St. Joseph Hall is the largest building on campus and houses the admissions and registrar s offices; computer labs; classrooms; the Giorgetti Library; bookstore; and business and faculty offices. The Athletic Center includes a gymnasium, dance studio, weight room, and racquetball court. Tuttle Hall is home to a 200-seat theater; student center and student life; career services; learning center; and campus ministry and chapel. 2

3 THE COLLEGE (continued) Medaille Hall is the women s residence while Roncalli Hall serves as the male dormitory and dining hall. In 2008, the College purchased the Clementwood estate from the Sisters of St. Joseph, enabling the College to expand its western borders by 27 additional acres. After two years of renovations, Clementwood reopened in 2010 and provides offices for administrative staff including the office of the president. Carnegie Classification for CSJ is Master s S. Undergraduate enrollment is 237 and graduate enrollment is 140. Approximately 60% of the student population is female and 40% male. The student to faculty ratio is 10:1; the average class size has nine students; and 94% of classes have fewer than 20 students. The average freshman retention rate is 66%. Seventeen percent of students take advantage of on-campus housing. On average, ninety-six percent of the undergraduate student population receives financial aid and the average scholarship or grant award is $9,865. CSJ is ranked in the 2012 edition of U.S. News Best College Rankings Regional Universities (North), Tier II. CSJ offers 30 academic programs within five divisions: Arts & Sciences, Business, Criminal Justice, Education, and Psychology & Human Services. The College offers associate, bachelor, post-bachelor s certificate, and master s degrees. Graduate degrees are offered in the Divisions of Business (Master of Business Administration), Education, and Psychology & Human Services. Unique to CSJ s graduate programs in Psychology & Human Services is a master s program in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling. The College of St. Joseph is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Specialized or programmatic certifications and approvals are also provided by the State of Vermont Department of Education; Council of Applied Master s Programs in Psychology; and by the Board of Psychological Examiners of Vermont. CSJ is also affiliated with the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. In athletics, the CSJ s Fighting Saints currently hold membership with the Yankee Small College Conference a Division II conference in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. Team programs include basketball, soccer, cross country, softball, and bowling. CSJ s motto is Lumen Via Veritas The Light, The Way, The Truth. The College places value on its student-centered culture and family-like environment. 3

4 Mission The College of St. Joseph is an independent Catholic college that educates men and women of varied faiths and backgrounds for lives of continuing personal and professional growth, intellectual development, and service to the community. BACKGROUND College of St. Joseph President, Frank G. Miglorie, announced his resignation at the annual Board of Trustees meeting. Miglorie has been a member of the CSJ community since 1970 and is notably the first lay president and first male president in the College s history. During his 28-year presidential term, Miglorie has been celebrated for his entrepreneurial spirit, his efforts to expand campus and academic programs, and for possessing a conservative fiscal approach to the College s resources. His tenure includes a series of achievements: Introduced two accelerated bachelor degree programs for working adults; implemented a Master of Science in Psychology and Master of Business Administration program; initiated the world class STEPS program, which enables Vermont foster youth to secure a CSJ education; Made radical transformations to the CSJ campus: oversaw the construction of St. Joseph Hall s second-story, which created an additional 15,000 square-feet; built a new athletic center, student center, and library; renovated both dormitories to improve energy efficiency; negotiated the acquisition of Clementwood, which provided the campus with 27 additional acres of land and a renovated mansion that houses administrative offices; Built an institutional advancement program, resulting in two successful capital campaigns and a continuously growing annual fund program; established an endowment fund, which is fast-approaching the $5 million mark; helped reduce institutional debt to $2.6 million at a favorable rate of 2.58% for the duration of its term; and Continued teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels throughout his lengthy tenure; has served the CSJ community in various capacities for 41 years. 4

5 BACKGROUND (continued) Former chairman of CSJ s Board of Trustees, Mr. Norman Lash, responded to Miglorie s resignation The College exists as it does today because of President Miglorie s vision, hard work, and dedication. Not only has the organization served its alumni well, but it has also become one of the area s largest employers and an integral part of the Rutland community. The next president will indeed have huge shoes to fill. During my tenure as chairman of the board of trustees, it has been an absolute pleasure and learning experience working with Frank. To say that he will be missed is indeed an understatement. For a number of years, undergraduate full-time enrollment has been problematic. College finances have been healthy and balanced budgets have been the norm. The current president s fund raising efforts have been successful. Although the college offers a number of programs that are in demand in the marketplace, very few are exclusive to CSJ. Currently, the college is designing a physician assistant program to create a signature program that will be unique in Vermont. The next president will lead in this effort and develop new strategies to enhance the brand of the college thereby stimulating enrollment growth and continued financial strength of the organization. CHALLENGES Major challenges for the next president are: Expanding the vision and strengthening the brand of the college s academic programs to create a higher level of attraction in the marketplace resulting in enrollment growth at both the undergraduate and graduate level; Building academic signature programs that are in high demand in the marketplace and will, therefore, promote enrollment growth, e.g. the new physician assistant program. Increasing the size of the full-time faculty to support curricular refinement and expansion in new program areas as the college s enrollment increases; working with the governing board to develop new sources of revenue through fundraising, reallocation of existing operating funds, and use of risk capital to achieve the foregoing; Giving priority attention to increasing the prowess of enrollment management; seeking new markets and branding opportunities for building the overall undergraduate and graduate student body; making special efforts to increase retention; seeking additional residential students while increasing on-campus programming to meet their needs; Leading strategic planning, linked to budgeting and assessment, to identify the College s most important priorities; Positioning the college for a major fund raising campaign; strengthen the college s planned giving and grant writing programs to underwrite future program and service development and to further build the college s endowment; Assisting the governing board leadership in developing the board of trustees, particularly in attracting persons who can give impetus to fund raising needs; Creating, developing, and sustaining an executive leadership team that can assure the achievement of both the college s vision and mission; and Maintaining a student-centered culture on campus that is committed to continuous improvement through the ongoing assessment of organizational performance and student learning outcomes. 5

6 QUALIFICATIONS The Board of Trustees and campus community seek a new president who is a mainstream Catholic leader, a strategic thinker, an entrepreneur, who has fire in the belly to be a college president, and who: Is a person of unquestioned integrity who can identify with the college s mission and core values and lead the college forward into its next stage of development; Has a strong background in academics and understand the uniqueness of career-oriented programs with foundations in the liberal arts; Holds the earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution of higher education; Possesses a successful track record in senior higher education administration and has an understanding of the uniqueness of small, independent college cultures; Has played a major role in developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy to increase enrollment; Can lead a comprehensive development program and can document past success in institutional advancement; Brings skills in strategic planning, budgeting, and human resources management; Leads with a collaborative management style and excellent interpersonal skills; Knows and implements best practices in higher education as they relate to the small, independent colleges founded in the Catholic tradition; and Engages students, faculty, administrators, staff, and trustees as key constituents of the college community and maintains an active presence at all college events. 6
