1 Mathematics Department Stanford University Math 171 Lecture Supplement The Riemann and Lebesgue Integrals Leon Simon Autumn Quarter, 2012 These notes are meant as a quick introduction to the Riemann integral using step function terminology, followed by an almost-as-quick introduction to the Lebesgue integral, also via step functions. We include a proof of Lebesgue s theorem which precisely characterizes those functions which are Riemann integrable. By an interval I in R n we mean the cartesian product I 1 I 2 I n, where each I j is an interval in R, thus each I j is one of the following: [a j, b j ], (a j, b j ), [a j, b j ), (a j, b j ], where a j b j are real. The volume I of an interval I = I 1 I 2 I n is of course defined to be the product of the edge lengths. Thus I = (b 1 a 1 ) (b n a n ) in case I j has end-points a j, b j with a j b j, and the volume is zero if I is a degenerate interval (i.e. if a j = b j for some j). We say the interval I is closed if each factor I j is a closed interval; thus a closed interval in R n is one that can be written [a 1, b 1 ] [a n, b n ]. Similarly, an open interval is one that can be written I = (a 1, b 1 ) (a n, b n ) (= if a j = b j for some j). From now on R = [a 1, b 1 ] [a n, b n ] will be a fixed closed interval in R n with a j < b j for each j = 1,..., n. Definition: A partition P of R is the collection of closed intervals I R obtained by partitioning each of the edges of R; thus for each j = 1,..., n we select points a j = t j,0 < t j,1 < < t j,nj = b j and then P = {[t 1,i1 1, t 1,i1 ] [t 2,i2 1, t 2,i2 ] [t n,in 1, t n,in ] : i j {1,..., N j } for each j = 1,..., n}. The points t j,0,..., t j,nj are called the j-th edge points of the partition P. For any I = [t 1,i1 1, t 1,i1 ] [t 2,i2 1, t 2,i2 ] [t n,in 1, t n,in ] P we let Ĭ denote the corresponding open interval (t 1,i1 1, t 1,i1 ) (t 2,i2 1, t 2,i2 ) (t n,in 1, t n,in ), and I = I \ Ĭ. If ϕ and ψ are two such step functions on R, say with ϕ = I P a IχĬ on I P Ĭ and ψ = J Q b Jχ J on J Q J, then the sum and difference is also a step function, as are max{ϕ, ψ}, min{ϕ, ψ}. One checks this by taking a common refinement R of the partitions P, Q (thus R is a partition of R with j-th edge points including all the j-th edge points of P and all the j-th edge points of Q, j = 1,..., n); then 1.2 ϕ = I RãIχĬ and ψ = I R b I χĭ on I R Ĭ for suitable ã I, b I (in fact ã J = a I whenever J R with J I and I P and b J = b I whenever J R with J I and I Q; this makes sense because every J in the common refinement R is contained in a unique I P and a unique Ĩ Q). Evidently it is also true that any scalar multiple of a step function is also a step function (indeed any product of step functions is a step function by 1.2) so in particular we have shown that the step functions form a subspace of the vector space of functions f : R R. The vector space of step functions on R will be denoted S(R). Naturally the integral of a step function ϕ as in 1.1 is defined by 1.3 R ϕ = I P a I I, where I is the volume of I (i.e. the product of the edge lengths of I). 3 2 Riemann Integrable Functions Riemann & Lebesgue Integrals 3 Given a bounded function f : R R we can define the upper and lower Riemann integral of f, denoted R f and R f respectively, by R f = inf ϕ S(R),f ϕ R ϕ R f = sup R ϕ ϕ S(R),ϕ f and f is said to be Riemann integrable if it is bounded and R f = R f. Of course using 1.5 and the above definitions we have R f R f in any case, so to prove f is Riemann integrable it suffices to prove the reverse inequality. We begin with a convenient criterion for checking Riemann integrability: 2.1 Lemma: f is Riemann integrable for each given ε > 0 there are step functions ϕ, ψ with ϕ f ψ on R and R ψ < R ϕ + ε (i.e. R (ψ ϕ) < ε). Proof : We assume that for each ε > 0 there are step functions ϕ, ψ with ϕ f ψ on R and R ψ < R ϕ + ε. Then R f R f R ψ R ϕ + ε R f + ε, whence 0 R f R f < ε, and hence (since this holds for each ε > 0) R f = R f, and so f is Riemann integrable as claimed. Proof : For any ε > 0, by definition of upper and lower integral we can find step functions ϕ, ψ with ϕ f ψ and with R ϕ > R f ε/2 and R ψ < Rf + ε/2. Thus if f is Riemann integrable (i.e. if the upper and lower integrals are equal), then we have R (ψ ϕ) < ε/2 + ε/2 = ε. We now check a few general facts about the set of Riemann integrable functions. 2.2 Theorem: Every continuous function f : R R is Riemann integrable. Proof: Let ε > 0. R is compact and a continuous function on a compact set is uniformly continuous, so there is δ > 0 such that f(x) f(y) < ε whenever x, y R with x y < δ. So take a partition P of R such that each I P has diameter < δ, and observe that then max I f min I f + ε for each I P. Define step functions ϕ, ψ on R as follows: ϕ Ĭ = min I f, ψ Ĭ = max f, I P I and take ϕ = min R f and ψ = max R f on the remaining points of R (i.e. on I P I). It suffices to prove (1) f, g R(R) f + g R(R) and R (f + g) = R f + R g and (2) f R(R) and λ R λf R(R) and R λf = λ R f. To prove (1), let ε > 0 and, using Lemma 2.1, pick step functions ϕ, ψ, ϕ, ψ such that ϕ f ψ, ϕ g ψ, and R (ψ ϕ) < ε/2, R ( ψ ϕ) < ε/2, and so by virtue of the linearity 1.4 we have R (ψ + ψ) R (ϕ + ϕ) < ε/2 + ε/2 = ε, and ϕ + ϕ f + g ψ + ψ, so we deduce that f + g is Riemann integrable by virtue of Lemma 2.1, and R f + R g ε R (ψ + ψ) ε R (ϕ + ϕ) R (f + g) R (ψ + ψ) R (ϕ + ϕ) + ε R f + Rg + ε, so R f + R g ε R (f + g) R f + R g + ε for each ε > 0, whence R (f + g) = R f + R g. The proof of (2) is left as an easy exercise, again based on Lemma 2.1 and the linearity 1.4 (one has to break consideration into the cases λ > 0, λ = 0, λ = 1). The Riemann integral also preserves ordering of functions as follows: 2.4 Theorem: Suppose f, g are Riemann integrable on R and f g (meaning f(x) g(x) x R). Then R f R g. Proof: Let ε > 0. Since R f = R f we can find a step function ϕ with ϕ f and R f R ϕ + ε, and since R g = R g we can find a step function ψ with g ψ and R ψ R g + ε. Then ϕ f g ψ and by 1.5 R f R ϕ + ε R ψ + ε R g + ε + ε; that is R f Rg + 2ε, and since ε is arbitrary this implies R f R g. 3 Lebesgue measure zero A key difference between Lebesgue theory and the theory of volume related to the Riemann integral is in the notion of measure zero. In the Riemann theory a set A is said to have volume zero (or Jordan content zero ) if for each ε > 0 there are open intervals I 1,..., I N with A N j=1 I j and N j=1 I j < ε. In the Lebesgue theory, we allow infinitely many intervals: 3.1 Definition: A set A R n is said to have Lebesgue measure zero (or simply measure zero) if for each ε > 0 there are open intervals I 1, I 2,... such that A j=1 I j and j=1 I j < ε. This makes a profound difference in the related theory; for example we have the following lemma:

5 Riemann & Lebesgue Integrals Lemma. Suppose A 1, A 2,... is a sequence of subsets of R n such that each A j has Lebesgue measure zero. Then j=1 A j also has Lebesgue measure zero. Proof: Let ε > 0. For each j we can select open intervals I j,1, I j,2,... with A j k=1 I j,k and k=1 I j,k < 2 j ε. Then j=1 A j j,k I j,k and j,k I j,k < j=1 2 j ε = ε As a first indication of the importance of the notion of sets of measure zero, we have the following very elegant theorem of Lebesgue, which completely characterizes those functions which are Riemann integrable. 3.3 Theorem (Lebesgue s Theorem on the Riemann Integral.) Let f : R R be a bounded function. f is Riemann integrable on R there is a set A R of Lebesgue measure zero such that f : R R is continuous at x for each point x R \ A. Caution: f : R R is continuous at each x R \ A is a much stronger condition than f R \ A is a continuous function, and indeed f R \ A continuous is in general not sufficient to ensure that f is Riemann integrable even if A has measure zero. For example if we take R = [0, 1], A = the set of rationals in [0, 1], then A has measure zero but the function f which is 1 on A and 0 on R \ A is not Riemann integrable because evidently R f = 0 and R f = 1. Proof of : Observe, by the definition of continuity, that f discontinuous at y R ε 0 > 0 such that sup I f inf I f > ε 0 open interval I with y I R, which is the same as saying there is a positive integer j such that sup I f inf I f > 1/j open interval I with y I R. Thus the set of discontinuities of f R can be written j=1 S j, where S j = {y R : sup I f inf I f > 1/j for every open interval I with y I R}. By Lemma 3.2 we know that j=1 S j has Lebesgue measure zero if each S j has Lebesgue measure zero, so it is thus enough to prove that S j has Lebesgue measure zero for each j. Let ε > 0, j {1, 2,...}. By Lemma 2.1 (with ε/j in place of ε), we can pick a partition P and corresponding ϕ, ψ S(R) with ϕ f ψ and I P (sup Ĭ f inf Ĭ f) I R (ψ ϕ) < ε/j. Since supĭ f infĭ f 1/j whenever S j Ĭ (by definition of S j), the above evidently implies {I P:S j Ĭ }(1/j) I < ε/j; that is, ( ) {I P:Ĭ S I < ε. j } But the intervals Ĭ P with Ĭ S j cover all of S j except for the set E = I P I of measure zero, and hence S j \ E {I P:Sj Ĭ }Ĭ. Thus ( ) proves that S j can be covered by a finite union of intervals of total volume < ε and hence S j has Lebesgue measure zero as required. Proof of : Let ε > 0 and cover the set of discontinuities of f by a union j=1 I j of open intervals such that j=1 I j < ε. Then K R \ j=1 I j is a compact set and f (as a function on R) is continuous at each point of this compact set. We can therefore assert that there is δ > 0 such that ( ) f(x) f(y) < ε whenever x K, y R, and x y < δ.

6 6 Math. 171 Lecture Supplement 2012 Notice that the statement is stronger than the standard fact that a continuous function on a compact set is uniformly continuous, because only the point x, and not necessarily the point y, is required to be in the compact set K on the other hand, the proof using the Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem is almost identical to the usual Bolzano-Weierstrass proof of this standard fact, as follows: If there is ε > 0 such that ( ) fails for each δ > 0 then it fails with δ = 1 k, k = 1, 2,..., and hence there are points x k K, y k R such that x k y k < 1 k but f(x k) f(y k ) ε. Then by the Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem we can find a convergent subsequence x kj with x = lim x kj K. Since x kj y kj < 1 k j 1 j we also have lim y k j = x, and so by continuity of f at x we have f(x kj ) f(y kj ) f(x) f(x) = 0, contradicting the fact that f(x kj ) f(y kj ) ε for each j. Now, with δ as in ( ), we select any partition P of R with each edge of each I P having length < δ/ n (so diameter of each I P is < δ). We conclude this section with two important lemmas about monotone sequences of step functions. Again the concept of sets of measure zero plays a key role. In the statement of these lemmas, and subsequently, we use the following terminology: Terminology: We say that a property holds almost everywhere or for almost every point (abbreviated a.e. ) in a subset Ω R n if there is a set S Ω of Lebesgue measure zero such that the property in question holds at each point of Ω \ S. Thus for example f k (x) 0 a.e. x Ω means that there is a set S Ω with Lebesgue measure zero such that lim f k (x) = 0 for every x Ω \ S. The first lemma relates to decreasing sequences of non-negative step functions: 3.4 Lemma. Suppose ϕ k S(R) with 0 ϕ k+1 ϕ k k = 1, 2,.... Then R ϕ k 0 ϕ k (x) 0 a.e. x R. Proof of : Let α > 0 and S α = {x R : lim ϕ k (x) α}. For each k = 1, 2,... let P k be a partition of R such that ϕ k is constant on Ĭ for each I P k, and let E be a set of Lebesgue measure zero such that ϕ k (x) 0 for each

So let Q be a partition of R with the property that, for i = 1,..., n, the i-th edge points of the partition Q include all the i-th edge points of the all the intervals in the partitions P kx1,..., P kxn. Let ζ be a step function which is ε on the former intervals and M = sup R ϕ 1 on the latter (and keep in mind that each J of the latter kind is contained in R \ ( N j=1 J xj ) j=1 I j). The second lemma concerns increasing sequences of step functions and is proved in a manner similar to the proof of the easy direction ( ) of Lemma 3.4: 3.5 Lemma. Suppose ϕ k S(R) with ϕ k ϕ k+1 for each k = 1, 2,... and suppose also that { R ϕ k} k=1,2,... is bounded. Then {ϕ k (x)} k=1,2,... is bounded for a.e. x R. Proof: We have to prove that S has measure zero, where S = {x R : {ϕ k } k=1,2,... is unbounded}. We are given { R ϕ k} k=1,2,... is bounded, and it is increasing by 1.5, hence lim R ϕ k R and we can select a subsequence {ϕ kj } j=1,2,... such that R (ϕ k j+1 ϕ kj ) < 2 2j for each j = 1, 2,.... Since α is arbitrarily large this shows that S has measure zero as claimed. 4 Definition and Properties of the Lebesgue Integral We let S + (R) denote the set of non-negative step functions (i.e. S + (R) = {ϕ S(R) : ϕ 0}). L + (R) denotes the set of functions f : R [0, ) with the property that there exists an increasing

L + (R) is closed under the operations of addition and multiplication by non-negative scalars and also under the operation of taking max and min of two functions in L + (R); thus 4.1 λ, µ 0, g, h L + (R) λg + µh L + and also max{g, h}, min{g, h} L + (R), because if ϕ k, ψ k are increasing sequences in S + (R) converging a.e. to g, h respectively with R ϕ k and R ψ k bounded, then λϕ k + µψ k, max{ϕ k, ψ k }( ϕ k + ψ k ) and min{ϕ k, ψ k } are increasing sequences in S + (R) with bounded integrals converging a.e. to λg + µh, max{g, h} and min{g, h} respectively. However L + (R) is not a vector space because it is not closed under the operation of multiplication by 1. On the other hand L 1 (R) = L + (R) L + (R) (= {f : f = g h with g, h L + (R)}) is a vector space since it is a non-empty subset of the vector space of real-valued functions on R and it is closed under addition and multiplication by scalars it is closed under multiplication by non-negative scalars because L + (R) is (by 4.1), and it is also trivially closed under multiplication by -1. We are going to define the Lebesgue integral on the vector space L 1 (R). In order to do this we first need to define it on L + (R): 4.2 Definition: For f L + (R) we define the Lebesgue integral Rf of f by R f = lim R ϕ k, where {ϕ k } k=1,2,... is an increasing sequence in S + (R) such that { R ϕ k} k=1,2,... is bounded and f(x) = lim ϕ k (x) a.e. x R (as in the definition of L + (R)). Notice that of course lim R ϕ k exists because { R ϕ k} is bounded by assumption, and it is monotone increasing by 1.5. However to be sure the definition makes sense we have to show that lim R ψ k = lim R ϕ k for any other increasing sequence {ψ k } k=1,2,... S + (R) with { R ψ k} k=1,2,... bounded and f(x) = lim ψ k (x) a.e. x R. This is in fact an easy consequence of Lemma 3.4, as follows: For each fixed k = 1, 2,... we have that {(ϕ k ψ l ) + } l=1,2,... is a decreasing sequence of non-negative step functions which converges to zero for a.e. x R, and hence by Lemma 3.4 (the direction of that lemma) we have lim l R (ϕ k ψ l ) + = 0 for each k, and hence R ϕ k R ψ l = R (ϕ k ψ l ) R (ϕ k ψ l ) + 0 as l. Thus R ϕ k lim R ψ l for each k and hence lim R ϕ k lim R ψ k. The reverse inequality is proved by interchanging ϕ k and ψ k. Thus the definition of the Lebesgue integral makes sense on L + (R) and evidently has the additivity property that 4.3 g, h L + (R) and λ, µ 0 λg + µh L + (R) and ( ) R λf + µg = λ R g + µ R h, by 4.1, Definition 4.2, and the linearity 1.4 of the integral on step functions. We of course have to check that this definition is independent of which g, h L + (R) we choose to represent f. So suppose g, h, g, h L + (R) and g h = g h. Then g + h = g + h and by the additivity 4.3 we then have R g R h = R g R h. We now check some of the basic further properties of the Lebesgue integral on L 1 (R): First we show that changing an L 1 (R) function on a set of measure zero neither changes the fact that the function is in L 1 (R) nor does it change the value of the integral: 4.7 f L 1 (R), f : R R, and f = f a.e. f L 1 (R) and R f = R f.
