They both achieved distinction awards and are now studying in their first year of the Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment at Farm Lodge. Student Profile John Dunlop After leaving Ballee Community High School, I served my time as a Welder/ Fabricator and found I had a passion for Engineering, so at the age of 25 I enrolled at the NRC for a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Engineering and found the staff very helpful, especially with my dyslexia. After having an enjoyable experience in obtaining my Level 2 Diploma with a Distinction* grade I then enrolled on a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering in which I obtained a Distinction grade. I am currently completing a Level 3 Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering. NRC has opened the doors to a range of new opportunities for me and I would highly recommend the course.

35 Northern Regional College 33 Student Profiles Jason Blair As a past pupil of Ballymoney High School, I enjoyed the course very much and the factory visits to NACCO, Schrader, Ryobi and FG Wilson gave me a great insight into showing me Engineering was the right course for me. The factory visits also allowed me to experience Engineering first hand and to see if I was interested in doing this as a career when I m older. Everyone was friendly on the course which made it a more pleasant experience. Having subsequently achieved a Distinction grade in a Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering I am currently enrolled in a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering. William Montgomery I m William Montgomery from Garavgh, I went to Garvagh High School, after I left school I started work and tried many different jobs. After I thought about doing further education I joined the Northern Regional College hoping to improve my job prospects. Over the year in the course I learned how to use a lot of hands on skills with the machines the college has to offer. We visited different factories; Schrader, NACCO, Ryobi and FG Wilson, also one of the best trips was the Sligo IT trip where we spent a week looking over a lot of the technology they have to offer, also had time to do some surfing and Zip Wiring. The course over the year was brilliant with me coming out with new mates, new skills and Distinction* Diploma also getting my essential skills Maths and English and good memories. I then enrolled in a Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering and having successfully completed the course I am now completing a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering and hope to progress into an Engineering career after getting my qualification. Gary Nicholl My name is Gary Nicholl, former pupil of Parkhall College in Antrim. When I left school I went into employment before I decided I wanted to further my education. I joined the BTEC level 2 in Engineering in I achieved an overall grade of Distinction*, the course is a fantastic stepping stone for anyone who wants to study engineering. During my time on the course we went on many factory visits such as Schrader and FG Wilson which gave me an insight of factory life. Within the course you get to experience working with electrical components, lathes, milling machines and fabricating sheet metal. I am now studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering having completed a Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering last year with an overall Merit grade.
