1 BERKELEY PRIMARY SCHOOL: PE REVIEW SUMMER 2015 ACTION OUTCOMES To employ a sport o SportsPlus specialist has been an asset to the team. Results from pupil specialist to support questionnaires show how much pupils have enjoyed their PE lessons with him. He is teaching of games. a great role model to the pupils as he is enthusiastic and very positive. He is committed to providing our children with a range of skills across various sports whilst educating them about healthy living and how exercise affects our body. Also, he has joined the swim teaching team at Berkeley, he has taught Year 5 and 6 and Reception very successful swimming lessons with pleasing progress. o See action plan for how Sports Plus will be utilised next year. To support teaching o Following on from specialist Gymnastic teaching, Reception and Year 1 performed staff in developing super gymnastics routines for families and friends at their wow events. This was very their subject well received by parents. knowledge and o In the Spring term all classes and teaching staff had a 5/6 week block of Dance team associated teaching with a dance specialist. pedagogy within o Feedback from staff questionnaires shows they have gained increased confidence Gymnastics and Dance. with teaching dance skills accurately and safely. o Year 2 children successfully performed a dance choreographed by the dance specialist for a special member of staff s retirement tea party at Berkeley Castle. Feedback from parents and community was very positive. There are also going to perform their dance at the Everyman Theatre Cheltenham on Wednesday 9 th July o Curriculum coverage for dance has been very good. All milestones for KS1/2 were covered. On the whole pupils questionnaire results show they feel they have made progress with dance. o Results from staff questionnaires show gym and dance are no longer areas of PE that staff require ongoing support with however it will be monitored to ensure standards remain high. To identify pupils o Higher ability pupils were more stretched in general PE lessons. The independent PE who are more able sessions ran by SportsPlus specialist for Higher Achieving Pupils were successful, in PE and ensure continue this next year perhaps as an after-school club to make way for addressing their needs are lower ability pupils during lesson time. More information for parents next time as they met. were not involved this year. o Year 5 and 6 pupils performed really well at the field events although not as well as hoped in the District Sports Track events. Informal discussions with pupils showed they need more time to train and prepare for the event and more fitness sessions. A mixture of District, Wotton, and Berkeley organised events. events from District o Tag rugby tournament and Wotton sports o Girls Football Tournament chosen alongside o District swim gala pupils and continue o Cricket festival to participate in after-school o KS1 Sharkly Gala (with Sharpness school, half of our children chose to go Sharpness, matches. the other half stayed at Berkeley and Sharpness children did the same.) o Tennis tournament o Chess tournament o Soft Archery o Sports day o KS1 Gala o KS2 Gala o Year 1 and 2 took part in a Kick Off Stroud sports afternoon held at Berkeley Primary School. This was a super afternoon the children learnt lots and had fun. Sadly due to lack of support for transport the second event at Stratford Park it had to be cancelled. o A strong link has been built with Sharpness, there is going to be many more sporting events for the 2 schools next year. Other highlights Website information about Sports Plus has been written is it awaiting approval. Feedback from parent and pupils quotes to be included when completed. General feedback about PE more positive from staff and children. SportsPlus specialist has taught fun PE sessions Little Jesters and Explorers club. SportsPlus specialist has taught all the KS2 classes curling which they thoroughly enjoyed. It was great to see some of our children enjoy and be so successful at this who do not normally enjoy PE lessons. Swimming questionnaires issued to parents/carers again to support planning and teaching of swimming which again proved useful. Parent questionnaire regarding PE provision sent out, analysis to take place during summer holidays and results used to inform next year s provision.

3 PUPIL FEEDBACK Pupil PE questionnaire results During the Spring Term children from Y1 to Y6 completed a questionnaire for pe and sport provision at Berkeley Primary School. The aim was to assess children's current attitudes to the pe and sport provision offered to them in school. The results will be used to improve the services we provide. This is an opportunity for you to comment on the current PE provision at our school. This applies to both PE that is taught in the school day, after-school sport provision and competitive fixtures or events against other schools.
