1 Edgewood School Building skills and values for life Headteacher: Mr Ed Seeley (0115) PE and Sports Report of Success Sports Premium money has allowed the school to continue the support for staff and pupils to achieve sporting success over the year. Successes include: Bronze School Games Mark award (2 nd year in a row) Over 30 teams entered into inter-school (Level 2) competitions Setting up a School Games Organising Committee Involving more children in the delivery of Level 1 competitions Involving more children in the participation of Level 1 competitions Winning 14 medals (1 gold, 5 silver and 8 bronze) across a number of Level 2 competitions Finishing 10 th on the School Games participation table (participating in 31 Level 2 events) School Games Mark This year, we again achieved the Bronze award. Examples of the criteria that we had to meet are listed below: *Aspire to 2 hours of PE and sport provision a week All classes take part in 2 hours of PE each week. This involves a mixture of gymnastics, dance and sports. In addition to this, we run competitions within school and offer a variety of after-school clubs for children to take part in. *Children are engaged in extracurricular sporting activity every week 31% of children attend clubs after school. This figure is similar to the previous year and shows that we are continuing to offer good provision after-school. *Taking part in 5 Level 1 competitions and 4 Level 2 competitions We attended 31 Level 2 competitions throughout the year. Within school, Level 1 competitions included football, tennis, cricket and boccia. *5% of young leaders leading, managing and helping run a School Games activity Over the year we had 30% of the children involved in the leading, managing and running of activities.

2 *Have a School Games organising crew and young ambassadors to promote sport in school and organise sports competitions Our Young Ambassadors helped with running events within school hours as well as after-school. They also helped with the running and management of the Sainsbury s School Games Day. *Opportunities which attract less active young people to participate in physical activity We held a number of activities within school that attracted less active young people. Inclusive activities such as boccia and multi-skills were run by the Young Sports Ambassadors. Setting up the Young Ambassadors has also meant that competitions and activities (competitive or not) have taken place within school time the school s YA have also gained invaluable leadership skills whilst leading a selection of pupils in management of activities. This contribution also allowed staff to undertake CPD opportunities throughout the year (Lacrosse training for instance) and allows PE leaders to meet regularly during the year to share information and contacts. Cyber Coach has been used within school to support the teaching of PE. It has a substantial dance section where high quality dance teachers demonstrate the different techniques in different dances. It leads to higher quality PE sessions. Teachers are also encouraged to use these to improve their own teaching. The second use of the system is as warm ups to the day/lessons, with its range of brain teasers and energetic starters leading to an increase engagement before lessons. Throughout the year, we were able to offer a multi-skills club which was ran by two members of the midday team. This club allows KS1 pupils to have an additional hour of PE per week, allowing them to enhance their basic skills as well as involving them in a competitive environment from an early age. Contributing towards swimming allows for every child within KS2 to go swimming for a minimum of 8 sessions per year. In KS1, children attend swimming sessions throughout the year. This contribution allowed the children to attend the county cricket final and the swimming gala. Without the contribution, the children would have missed these events due to a lack of transport available at those times. Equipment is important and improves the teaching of the different techniques required in different sports/activities. All of the equipment is vital particularly Lacrosse equipment which was a new sport that the school got involved with and was in addition to some training undertaken by staff. Teaching new activities and having the correct equipment engages both children and staff in the teaching and participation.

3 Sports Premium Funding This year we will look to utilise the funding as follows: 1. Improving the teaching of PE We employ PE specialists to teach PE lessons in school. The specialists work throughout all Key Stage 2 classes. As part of Continued Professional Development, staff are able to observe PE sessions to improve the quality of their PE teaching. In addition, the IRIS camera will be used to record quality PE sessions that staff are able to view and use to support improvement. 2. Increasing participation We contribute to the School Games Network which supports the School Games Organiser within the district, who provides more events on the school games calendar and liaises with PE coordinators. The SGO promotes better links with school PE departments, permits the use of Secondary school facilities for competitions and organises festivals and events. Our Young Ambassadors receive training through the School Games Network which teaches them about leadership and the management of activities. They actively target less-active children with activities such as Boccia and Multi-skills events. They also organise inter-school challenges and activities throughout the year. Target less-active children through a Change for Life club. Sainsbury s School Games Day with the help of the Young Ambassadors and the Organising Crew. Edgewood Sports Week, which will offer a variety of exciting sports and activities for children to get involved with. We aim to be one of the top 10 schools (out of 38) for participation in Level 2 events. This will be assisted through good teaching within lessons, and enthused children putting themselves forward for competitions and events. Continue to use the funding for transport to and from events. Offer additional after-school PE and sports clubs to children. 3. Improving quality of equipment and resources This year, we are looking to increase the interest that children have for PE and sport. We will endeavour to spend the Sports Premium funding on events that are wide-ranging and offer the children a unique opportunity to attempt an activity or learn a new skill, for example - Archery and Fencing. In addition, we will look to purchase any equipment that is required to achieve our goals within PE and sport.
