1 Instructor: Amy Chambless Materials: Crescendo! 2 nd Ed. Office: 140 Dey Hall La meglio gioventù Office Hrs: Mon, Fri 8:30-10:00 (Bullshead) Wed 1:15-2:15 (140 Dey) Course Description: Italian 204 offers a close review of Italian grammatical structures you learned in Ital 101- Ital 203 and introduces a few advanced concepts as well (e.g. the trapassato prossimo, passato remoto, and trapassato del congiuntivo). Over the course of the semester, you will review and expand your vocabulary including your idiomatic vocabulary. You will develop greater fluency in both speaking and writing. You will gain historical and cultural knowledge in this course as well, as our language study will be supplemented by a close viewing of two award-winning Italian films. Marco Tullio Giordana s 2003 film La meglio gioventù is a series which follows the lives of two brothers growing up in Italy during the latter part of the twentieth century. Their lives and ensuing dramas span several critical eras of Italian history which themselves were full of social and political drama; Italy: Love It or Leave it is a 2011 documentary about young Italians considering the co-existing hardships and beauty of their land and reflecting upon the various forces that shape national identity. Learning Objectives: to consolidate and deepen knowledge of Italian grammar to improve comprehension skills through exposure to cinematic texts to expand vocabulary, including knowledge of idioms to learn more about Italian history, culture and social issues to develop greater accuracy and fluency in both spoken and written Italian Course Requirements: Your homework will consist of a variety of activities such as grammatical exercises, reactions to film clips, other short writing assignments, journaling, short research projects, and oral interviews. Your participation grade will be based upon your preparation for class each day, how much you say in class and your commitment to using only Italian during class. There will be five quizzes, a midterm and a final exam. No make-ups are allowed. You will research an important phenomenon of Italian history. As a culminating activity, you will create a video project, in which you will creatively present these critical ideas to your classmates. Italian at UNC: The Department of Romance Studies offers Italian courses from beginning to advanced levels, as well as a major and minor with courses in advanced language, literature, culture, and film. The Italian major and minor are good choices for careers in International Relations & Business, Journalism, Communications, and Education. For information about the program or about study-abroad opportunities, talk to your instructor or the Italian Undergraduate Advisor Amy Chambless: achamble@ .unc.edu 1

3 ITAL 204 Course Requirements: Read carefully, initial each blank and sign at the bottom, confirming your willingness to respect and adhere to these policies. Turn this page into your instructor by the 3rd day of class. Participation and Attendance Your participation will be evaluated by several criteria: coming to class prepared (having read the assigned pages and done the assigned exercises); speaking only Italian during class; volunteering often; working well in groups. Absences (excused or unexcused) will bring your participation grade down naturally, because you can only participate when you are physically present in class. Look carefully at your participation rubric on p. 15, to see exactly how this grade is calculated. However, you may be granted two free absences, which will not affect your participation grade. If you miss class on the day you have a tema, a quiz or an exam (including any small vocabulary quizzes), you may only make up that quiz or exam if your absence is excused; the make-ups will be different from the ones your classmates take. Absences are excused in case of a university sporting event, an illness, or a Dean s excuse. If your absence is not excused, you will take a zero. Homework All homework should be written legibly or typed. We do not accept late assignments. Your homework assignments will be related to the grammatical and lexical content of the chapters and will include grammatical exercises as well as different types of writing activities. Special Projects Special projects are opportunities to apply your language skills to assignments that are slightly larger in scope than daily homework. These projects give you the opportunity to assimilate lexical and grammatical content from each chapter and to delve into one of the cultural themes found within. The projects this semester include three oral exams (a recording and assessment of a news article, a reenactment of a scene, and an interview with your instructor), four temi (compositions), and a group film project. Quizzes, Midterm and Final 5 quizzes, a midterm, and a final are scheduled this semester. Note the dates. No make-ups are allowed, except in the case of an excused absence. (See above.) FINAL EXAM: Monday, December 12 at 8:00 a.m. Professionalism Students should come to class with a positive attitude. Cell phones should be turned off. There should be no use of electronic devices for any purpose other than meeting the lesson s objectives. Each failure to respect this policy will result in an automatic point deduction from the participation grade. When you communicate with your instructor, please use language appropriate for a professional relationship. Honor Code All students should respect the rules of the Honor Code ( When doing all homework, you must work alone. You may not get help from classmates, tutors, or online translators. Violations are easy to detect. If you do not respect this policy, your instructor will carry out one of the sanctions outlined above. You will sign a pledge on your quizzes, exams, and grading rubrics, confirming your adherence to this policy. Achieving Your Goals Because language learning is cumulative, it is essential for your success in this class that you review old material (grammatical and lexical content) as you learn the new. You will be held accountable for it. Grade Distribution Participation 15% Homework 20% Special Projects 10% Quizzes 20% Midterm 15% Final 20% Grade Scale A A B B B C C C D D F Below THERE IS NO EXTRA CREDIT OFFERED FOR THIS COURSE AT ANY POINT DURING THE SEMESTER. I have read the course policies, understand them, and agree to respect them. 3
