1 NYU Department of Italian Summer 2014 Intensive Intermediate Italian Section 001 Monday-Thursday, 2:30-6:15 Paolo Campolonghi Learning Goals Comprehension: Students will gain understanding of oral and written material on various topics, ranging from basic needs and personal interests to more complex tasks, such as travel, history, and politics. They will be able to read written material adapted from authentic sources, such as brief narratives and newspaper articles, and will gradually be able to infer and extract increasingly complex information from the material. The understanding and expression of personal thoughts and feelings will grow to include increasingly sophisticated nuances. Production: Students will be able to handle uncomplicated conversation tasks and standard social situations. They will be learn to react to communicative situations beyond their mere immediate needs, approaching in some depth topics such as leisure time, professional goals, and cultural norms. Skills in oral presentation will begin to solidify: within limits, students can sustain a general conversation and be understood, debating opposing viewpoints on a range of topics, and making comparisons and hypotheses. Students will be able to write short letters and show command of simple sentence syntax. Skills in narrating in short paragraphs begin to emerge. Linguistic structures: Students will learn increasingly complex grammar, such as indirect and combined pronouns, various past and future tenses, and conditional and subjunctive modes. Expected Learning Outcomes (ELO) Use only target language to negotiate meaning in class Demonstrate ability to handle various communicative functions, such as expressing and comparing preferences and experiences on various topics Express opinions, needs and wants, formulate hypotheses and conditional sentences; Demonstrate knowledge of grammatical structures (particularly of the pronominal and verbal system) in periodic written tests and exams Design an oral presentation and perform it in front of the class to demonstrate achievements in mono-directional communication; Compile textual assignments involving prose production, such as synopses, paraphrases, summaries and short essays on a given topic. Note: specific learning outcomes are indicated below after each unit. Textual Resources: Oggi in Italia, Houghton-Mifflin, NYU Edition (**Oggi in Italia = OI; Parole per Oggi = PO) Audio lab: (NYU username and password) Classes Shell: Intensive Intermediate Italian Section 001 1
