Course Description This course offers an in-depth analysis of Spanish grammar with an emphasis on developing advanced writing skills in Spanish. *This course fulfills the WritD requirement writing within the disciplines. Course Objectives This course seeks to provide students with opportunities to discover the various components of the Spanish language, as well as to acquire a high degree of understanding of the language as a complete system. We will work towards this goal by analyzing the Spanish language as it occurs in different contexts, and by engaging in the writing process. The content and organization of the course will allow students to revisit traditional problems of Spanish grammar that non-native speakers of Spanish face in the process of learning Spanish as a second language. However, this course will also enable heritage and native speakers of Spanish to rationalize what they intuitively know. In addition, basic but advanced rules of Spanish grammar and syntax will be analyzed in order to develop a more in-depth knowledge of Spanish.
2 Course Format PARTICIPATION: Students are expected to participate orally and in writing in class. Because of the importance of participation, only one absence will be allowed. All other absences will lower the student s over-all grade by 2%. **Please see the College attendance policy. Class activities include group and class discussions, written and reading activities, and online discussions. Students will be observed and evaluated on an individual basis as well as in small group activities. ASSIGNMENTS: Students are expected to prepare assigned activities before class so that they may participate effectively on an individual level and on group activities. Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period. Late work will not be accepted. As part of the daily assignments, students must complete the three types of exercises that complement each of the sections in every chapter: Para Empezar, Práctica, and Análisis. Writing component Writing is a basic key component of language. The objective of this class is to teach native and non-native speakers of Spanish to write and use Spanish correctly, with as much clarity and accuracy as possible. The primary focus is communicating at a higher level of written proficiency. The objective is to increase the students comfort level and proficiency in Spanish through practice (individual, peer, and group work) and correction (peer and instructor). Writing benchmark: Students will use familiar topics to write narratives and descriptions of a factual nature or routine correspondence consisting of several paragraphs at a level understandable to a native speaker of Spanish. There will be a good deal of writing practice including formal writing assignments (compositions, analysis, online discussions, commentaries) and informal journal writing on required topics, suggested topics, and on occasions, on topics of the students choice. There will be in-class and out-of-class writing activities. The formal writing assignments and the take-home compositions will focus on form and accuracy while the journal writing assignments will focus on building student confidence with the written word in a less formal or grammar-based setting. The written assignments will be corrected by peers and, on occasion, by the instructor. Writing competence will be evaluated in terms of overall content, grammar and syntax, use of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, and use of culturally appropriate material. Informal Writing As part of the informal writing, grammar topics will be discussed using an online writing program (wikis). This form of writing will be considered part of the class grade. Students will be evaluated on the CONTENT of their writing, rather than the form. It is very important that you prepare for the online discussions so that you may effectively participate. Students will be evaluated on the clarity of ideas presented, correct use of vocabulary and terminology, and the amount they produce.
3 The second component of informal writing is the Dialog Journal. Dialog journal is a form of informal writing that has been created as a way to encourage students to express themselves in the target language. Note: this assignment is for you to have fun and enjoy! You will be asked to write one journal entry per week. Students are encouraged to comment on topics related to their fields of study, however, some required and suggested topics will be given by the instructor. Although the focus of this assignment is gaining confidence communicating in writing, students should attempt to practice the grammar structures studied in class. In order to expose students to the proper use of idiomatic expressions, a webpage has been created to post such type of expressions. Students are expected to read all the information posted on this page, and are HIGHLY encourage to use the expressions in their dialog journal entries. Students will write their journal entries in the form of an , which they will exchange with a given classmate. As part of this assignment, students will also have to write a reaction/commentary to their classmates journal entries. More details about the dialog journal will be given in class. Formal Writing Compositions and Grammar Analysis are the two components of formal writing assignments for this course. The formal writing assignments will be rewritten and resubmitted for peer editing, restating, and for evaluation of syntax, grammar, and content to meet the objective that the writing sample be understandable to a native speaker of Spanish. NOTE: Every composition and analysis must be formatted according to the MLA Manual as well as follow all writing guidelines (citations, etc). A copy of the MLA Manual will be available for consultation in the Culpeper center. In addition, you can find a copy of the manual in the Folke Bernadotte library. Grammar analysis Grammar analysis will count as formal writing. Grammar analysis will assess students linguistic, and grammatical understanding of the Spanish language. The analysis will be based on the Análisis section at the end of each chapter, except for chapter one. The analysis must be a thoughtful response to the issues presented in the Análisis section. It must be no longer than two double spaced pages. One thoughtful, well written page will suffice. Students will be evaluated in terms of CONTENT, and more importantly, on the relevance of their comments, as well as on the examples provided. Compositions In order to achieve the writing benchmark for this course, students will write THREE compositions (800 words minimum) as part of their coursework. The compositions MUST be original pieces of work and not work copied from other sources. The topics of the compositions will be given by the instructor. Each composition must be accompanied by two drafts; one peer-edited and one self-edited. Please, be advised that under the Gustavus Honor Code, you will be allowed to consult your work with the Spanish tutors, however, you must be cautious with the amount and type of help that you request/obtain. Please, talk to me if you are in doubt of any special help / guidance / assistance you may use or need. Your written work will be graded under the following criteria:
