1 Italiano 2110 Fall 2006 /Wednesday/ 6-8:40 / Room: FA 128 Instructor: Theresa Catalano Home phone: theresacatalano@hotmail.com Goals and Objectives: The key objective of this course is to continue to develop language proficiency in Italian. During this course you will continue to make progress towards competence in speaking, listening, and writing, as well as towards knowledge of Italian cultures. Oral competence is emphasized. By the end of the course, you will be able to handle routine situations of a personal and social nature. These will involve how to talk about yourself and others, how to get necessary information by asking simple questions, how to get through simple survival situations such as being able to order food and beverages, etc...in addition, you will learn how to discuss current issues as well as poetry and fables and other authentic texts, and you will further develop your ability to speak using all the grammatical structures learned the previous year. You will also learn the remote past in order to read Italian literature. In order to help you reach these goals, instruction will take place in ITALIAN. YOU WILL NOT UNDERSTAND EVERY WORD.If you can answer the instructor s questions and do what she asks you to do, you are doing just fine. If you do not understand, please let the instructor know. You may want to use one of the following expressions: Come? ( Huh?) Non ho capito. ( I didn t understand) Non ho sentito. ( I didn t hear) Come si dice in Italiano? ( How do you say in Italian?) Cosa vuol dire? ( What does mean?) The only way this approach can work is through your active participation during class period. For most of you, class time will be your only opportunity to practice what you learn, so it is imperative that ONLY ITALIAN is spoken during class time. Grading scale: = A = A = B = B = C = C = D = D 59-0 = F

2 Grade components: Participation/Attendance: 15% Homework: 15% Cultural Event: 5% Journal: 10% Operetta activity: 10% Poem: 5% Midterm( oral = 10%): 20% Final ( oral = 10%) : 20% Each class will consist of the following elements: Joke of the day a joke will be told and discussed with the teacher Idiom An idiom will be explained and each group will use it in a sentence and the class will correct and discuss together Fables Each class students will need to have read the fable assigned from the class packet according to the syllabus. The fable will be read aloud and discussed. Students will then take a short quiz on the fable counting towards their homework grade. Poems Students will choose a poem ( or 2 for the short ones) from the class packet to prepare and present in class. The poem must be COMPLETELY MEMORIZED, that means no note cards and no copy of the poem in the vicinity!!! The poems are relatively short, and memorizing them will force students to become more familiar with the beautiful sounds of the Italian language as well as reinforce vocabulary and structure learned in class. Students must prepare a vocabulary list for the class and two discussion questions to be discussed in groups. The questions need to be more analytic in nature and should not just be simple factual questions, ex.: what is a coccinella? Who is the main character? but rather.. How do you think the author feels about professors? or Have you ever broken anything like the character in the story? What did you do? or What is the pun in this poem? etc The questions should be designed for class discussion, but also they should be designed so that students will need to have read and studied the poem ahead of time in order to answer them. As with the fables, students will need to read the scheduled poems before

3 they are presented. Also, any kind of visual aid, creativity or enthusiasm will be rewarded with a higher grade. Book discussion The pages assigned in the book will be discussed, and exercises assigned the following week will be checked in class. BREAK At 7:30 we will have a 15 minute break. Activity/Song/Game/ Writing These activities will be based on structures/vocabulary covered in the book. Conversation Line The last half hour of class will be dedicated to discussion with classmates on important issues dealt with in the textbook. Other Elements: Journal As this will be the main writing component, the journal will be checked weekly, and needs to contain at least two entries per week. Entries need to be at least ½ page. Journals will be collected and read twice during the semester as indicated on the prospetto didattico. Operetta Two weeks of class will be dedicated to reading an operetta in Italian and creating a video involving the operetta to be presented in groups to the class. The group projects may be one of the following; 1) A trailer advertising the operetta to an Italian audience. 2) A commercial designed to be broadcast during the performance of the operetta. 3) An alternative ending to the operetta. All options must involve props and costumes, and must be filmed with the groups before the due date listed in the syllabus, and a video cassette/dvd must be presented to the instructor for viewing on that due date. Midterm and Final Exams: There will be a midterm and a final, both with a written and an oral component. These are the only exams given and they are worth 40% of your grade. They will consist of an oral section, a reading comprehension section (a fable or poem from class presentations ) and questions regarding the textbook exercises and structures. A section on vocabulary will test students knowledge of vocabulary from the operetta, idioms, textbook, fables and poems. Learning new vocabulary is an extremely important part of the intermediate study of a language, and this section will be very important on each test, therefore it is highly recommended that students devote much of their study time to learning new words given in the readings assigned. There will also be a section where students must use idioms from class discussions in sentences or choose the correct idiom for the situation given. Students will be asked to tell a joke as part of their oral exam.

4 Participation/Attendance: To derive the greatest benefit from instruction, attendance is essential. No matter what the reason for absence, failure to attend class always results in missed opportunities to hear and speak Italian. These opportunities cannot be made up. Therefore, for every class period missed, for whatever reason, 1.5 percentage points will be deducted from your participation grade. There will be no excuses accepted or exceptions made to this rule. Habitual tardiness, that is arriving 5-10 minutes late for class, will accumulate and ultimately count as missing class. Arriving 20 minutes late for class will immediately count as an absence, and the 1.5 points will be subtracted for that day. Students with more than three unexcused absences will receive a grade of F. Excused absences are those with official documents such as death certificates and emergency room receipts. Also, students are responsible to contact fellow students to obtain homework assignments and information about what was missed during an absence. If assignments were due at the time of the absences, they will need to be turned in at the beginning of the next class at the latest. Participation includes answering and asking questions as well as participating in all in-class activities. In-class activities include joke, idiom, fable and poem discussions, conversation-discussions, book exercises, games, music and conversation lines. In order to be prepared for these activities, students are expected to read the sections of the chapters and study the vocabulary introduced before class time as well as after. Students also need to have read the poems and fables scheduled for that class period before they are presented and be prepared to discuss them.

5 Art Component: In order to accommodate all learning styles and facilitate memory and retention of concepts, various art activities will be executed during class or as homework assignments. It is very important that students repeat aloud or to themselves the words or concepts they are working on during these art activities. Students do not need to worry about the quality of the artwork, the artwork will be used as a means through which language learning is facilitated. Artwork will never be graded, but participation in the activities will count towards the participation grade. For the art activities students will need to buy and keep in class the following supplies which can be purchased at the bookstore, or any art store, or students may choose to use materials they already have at home. 1) One 8 ½ by 11 inch SKETCH pad ( white paper) 2) One set of wet media ( choose your favorite watercolors are easy to carry but tempera or acrylic works well also. 3) One set of dry media ( choose from crayons, colored pencils, markers, or oil pastels) 4) One set of clay or play-dough with black and white as well as primary colors. *Please bring these materials to class, label them, and store them in the ITALIAN 2110 container. Students should keep some colors and paper at home to use for homework assignments. Homework: Homework will consist of workbook as well as various art-related language activities, fables, poems, and textbook readings and exercises. Cultural Event: Because studies have shown that being part of the target language culture is key to success in foreign language study, throughout the semester, students will need to attend one cultural event in Italian, and write a brief report discussing the event. A report form will be distributed to students sometime before the November 16 th deadline. Students are recommended to attend the opera TOSCA, which will be presented by Opera Omaha on September 27 th and, 29 th at 7:30, and Sunday, October 1 st at 1:30. Student tickets can be purchased online for $ If students choose to attend another cultural event in Italian, they will need to have it approved by the instructor. Other options include: Italian films ( NetFlix carries many), art exhibitions of Italian artists, performances in other cities ( as long as the event is in Italian and approved by the instructor beforehand).
