1 rd th 3-5 February 28 - March 1, 2015 Matthew 13:1-23 Adventure Bible (pp ) Cnnect Time (20 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids int grups and begin their activity. Large Grup (25 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Mdel what it lks like t be engaged in large grup. Small Grup (15 minutes): Keep kids in small grups until parents arrive. If yu all have extra time at the end, yu can review the vide and sngs tgether. When leaving, encurage kids t share the way they want t grw t be like Jesus this week (it s written n a small piece f paper inside the Ziplc bag). The Swer Gd calls us t share Jesus with ur friends Tday is all abut sharing Jesus with ur friends. Encurage kids t bring their friends and t be bld in sharing their faith. *The Cnnect Time activity might seem cmplicated if yu apprach it step by step. Read the instructins t the game ahead f time and make sure yu understand it. Jesus tld a parable f a farmer swing seeds t help us understand hw imprtant it is t grw t be like Jesus and share him with thers (even if smetimes they dn t listen). Read Matthew 13:1-23 ahead f time t prepare t teach it t kids.

2 GOAL: Cnnect Time is all abut engaging kids in an activity that allws them t cnnect with each ther right away while simultaneusly piquing their curisity fr Large Grup and preparing their minds fr what they re ging t hear. Telephne Pictinary * Break kids small grups Give each kid a stack f ¼ sheets f paper and a pen/marker (make sure they have as many pieces f paper as kids in their grup.) Everyne writes a phrase n the tp paper f the stack. This can be as ridiculus r as serius as the students want it t be. Sme starting ideas culd be their favrite Bible stry, mvie, TV shw, etc. Pass the whle stack clckwise (but keep it hidden frm everyne else). Kids will receive smene else s phrase. Debrief: They shuld mve that paper t the back f the stack. Then draw a picture f their interpretatin f the phrase (if they can t read their neighbr s writing, they can ask fr it t be whispered t them verbally). Pass the stack clckwise again (with the drawing n tp this time) Everyne will receive a drawing frm the same neighbr wh gave them a phrase. They shuld mve the drawing t the bttm f the stack and write a phrase that they think interprets the drawing n the next blank piece f paper. Repeat the writing-drawing stages until the kids receive their riginal stack. Then, take turns sharing yur stacks, seeing hw well the riginal phrase stayed intact r hw funny it has becme! Instead f silly messages, what are sme imprtant messages (such as gd advice) that we culd pass n t ur friends? Then ask kids abut the best and wrst parts f their weeks. **If yu feel this game is t cmplicated fr yur grup, play regular Pictinary n blank sheets f paper r regular telephne. If yu have extra time, remind them f yur expectatins fr their behavir: (1) be kind, (2) listen when smebdy speaks, and (3) fllw the leader s instructins.

We have a message f gd news and we want t share it with ur friends. Tip: Fill the spray bttle with water ahead f time. REVIEW THE STORY 1. What happened t the seeds in the parable f the swer? 2. What d the seeds represent? 3. Wh des the famer represent? 4. What imprtant lessn (r message) can we learn frm this stry? 5. Hw can we be like the seeds in the gd sil? (Brainstrm ways t becme mre like Jesus, including ways t share Jesus with thers.) CONNECT TO THE STORY Give each kid a Ziplc bag and paper twel. Have kids spray paper twels with water. Paper twels shuld be damp enugh t prvide misture fr the bean. Kids shuld fld the paper twel and place it in the bag. Have the kids place a dry lima bean n tp f the damp paper twel s it s visible and seal the bag tightly, s there s n air in it. Give kids (1) an instructins sticker and t stick n the utside f the bag. Have kids cme up with ne way they want t grw t be mre like Jesus and have rts (Here are sme ideas: read the Bible, pray, invite a friend t Kids Club, etc.!) Draw/write that thing n the blank quarter sheet f paper. Then slip that inside the bag as a reminder (r tape it t the utside depending n hw wet yur paper twel is). Grw these seeds as a reminder that by talking t Gd and listening t him, we can keep grwing t be mre like Jesus! Extra time? Play additinal runds f Pictinary Telephne (r Pictinary r telephne), but this time the phrase shuld be a way t share t Jesus!

THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER Yu knw, ne message that we dn t want t get mixed up is the message f Jesus and the gd news that he has rescued us! But yu knw what? Jesus tld us a stry t help us understand that sme peple wn t understand his message, r wn t accept it. Let s take a lk at the whle stry. We re ging t watch a vide f the time Jesus tld this stry t a crwd f peple. It s called The Parable f the Swer. Des anybdy remember what a parable is? (Let kids respnd.) Yes, it s a stry that teaches a lessn. And des anybdy knw what a swer is? (Let kids respnd.) Yes, it s a farmer wh plants seed. Swing is anther wrd fr planting. This stry is all abut a farmer wh planted seeds. The seeds are like the message f Gd s kingdm. When we hear what happens t the seeds, we can understand what happens when peple hear the message f Jesus. As yu watch, see if YOU can figure ut the lessn f this parable. Ready?

6 Vide: Parable f the Swer Pretty fun way t hear that stry, huh? OK, I want everybdy t think in yur head fr a mment. What lessn d yu think Jesus wants us t learn frm this stry? (Give kids time t think.) Turn and tell ne persn the lessn yu think we can learn (give kids time t share). What did yu guys think? (Have kids share a few lessns.) That s right: it s a reminder that we shuld grw rts by getting t knw Gd better thrugh things like the Bible and prayer. If ur rts are really strng, we ll be like the seeds in the gd sil. And then we ll be able t tell thers abut Jesus and share the message, just like farmers shuld plant seeds! Smetimes peple wn t listen t us but smetimes they will and it ll be like seeds falling n gd sil. THE MESSAGE Yu knw, when Jesus talks abut a harvest, he means that mre peple wuld becme part f Gd s family, and they wuld tell thers hw t becme part f Gd s family, and they wuld tell thers and n and n and n. Gd wants everybdy t be part f his family! Basically, this is the message that Jesus wants us t knw. It s summed up really well in Jhn 3:16 in the Bible: SLIDE: Jhn 3:16 Gd lved the wrld s much that he gave his ne and nly Sn. Anyne wh believes in him will nt die but will have eternal life. When we believe that Gd sent Jesus t rescue us, we becme a part f Gd s family and a part f Gd s Kingdm. Then ur jb is t get t knw Jesus better and act mre and mre like him, which includes telling thers abut him. And if we d that, we re like the seeds in gd sil that grw and bring a bigger harvest. Grwing means becming mre like Jesus and bringing a bigger harvest means sharing Gd s message with thers. RESPOND AND PRAY We can be mre like Jesus and tell thers abut him right nw, and that s called being Jesus disciples. We re ging t watch a vide abut it. Tday we learned abut the Parable f the Swer, which teaches us the imprtance f listening t Gd s Wrd. Ask yur child abut why it s imprtant t share the messages f the Wrd f Gd with their friends and family. Yu can read the Parable f the Swer at hme, in Matthew 13:1-23. We als started grwing bean plants tday s yur child can see hw the Wrd f Gd can take rt in their lives. The seeds shuld be placed in a warm, sunny spt in yur hme (such as taped t a windw). If the paper twel becmes dry, sprinkle it with water. The seeds shuld finish grwing in abut tw weeks.
