2 System Requirements To ensure that Trend Micro SafeSync runs smoothly, make sure that your computer meets the following requirements. 4 Installing Trend Micro SafeSync To install Trend Micro SafeSync: 1. Open the Trend Micro SafeSync website and set up an account. If you already have an account, click Activate with a key. If you just want to try out SafeSync, click Sign up for a free trial. 2. Click Get Started after creating an account. 3. Click the Download Now button on the next page that opens. 4. Read the license agreement carefully when it appears. If you accept the terms of the agreement, click Agree and Install. SafeSync automatically checks if your computer meets the system requirements. 5. When the "Restart Your Computer" screen appears, click Restart to finish the installation process. 6. After restarting your computer, provide the address and password for your account when the Trend Micro SafeSync screen appears, then click Sign In. 4

Click Run when asked what you want to do next. 5. Read the license agreement carefully when it appears. If you accept the terms of the agreement, click Agree and Install. 9 Using Your SafeSync Folder Your SafeSync folder is just like other folders on your computer, except it creates an online copy of everything you put inside. A copy also goes into the SafeSync folder or app on every other computer or device where you have installed SafeSync. Just drag and drop files to the SafeSync folder on your desktop to make them available wherever you need them. Any changes you make to the contents of your local SafeSync folder are automatically synchronized with the online folder, plus your other computers and devices, and vice versa. You can also select any folder on your computer and turn it into another SafeSync folder. 9

13 Downloading Files and Folders You can download files from your SafeSync account even if you have not set up the SafeSync folder on a computer. If you can reach the Internet, then you can download the files you want. To download a single file: 1. Sign into the Trend Micro SafeSync website. 2. Double-click a file. 3. Select where you want to download the file. 4. Click OK. To download multiple files and folders: 1. Sign into the Trend Micro SafeSync website. 2. While pressing down the CTRL key on your keyboard, click several files and folders. 3. Right-click files you want to download, and then select Download the selected items. 4. Select where you want to download the files. 5. Click OK. You must enable Java on your computer to download multiple files and folders at the same time. 13

14 Removing Files or Folders To remove files or folders from SafeSync, just open the SafeSync folder on your computer and delete what you have stored inside. Your changes will be synchronized online to your other computers and devices. 14

15 Sharing Files and Folders You can share files or folders in you SafeSync folder with anyone using just a simple hyperlink. The recipient will be able to see the files and folders but not make changes to them. You can send this hyperlink through messages, instant messages (IMs), or post them to any website you like. For additional security, you can add a password to the shared folder so that only people who know the password can access the shared folder. You can also disable the link whenever you want, or even add an expiration date. To get a secure shareable link: 1. Double-click the SafeSync folder on your computer to open it. 2. Right-click the file or folder that you want to share, select SafeSync from the list that appears, and then click Share this Click Get extra protection and add a password, an expiration date, or both. 4. Click Copy Link. 5. Press the CTRL and V simultaneously to paste a copy of the link wherever you want. To get a secure shareable link using the SafeSync webite: 1. Sign into the Trend Micro SafeSync website. 2. Right-click the file or folder that you want to share, then select the option that starts with Get link to this (the last word of the phrase will vary depending on what kind of file you have chosen). 3. Click Link options and add a password, an expiration date, or both. 4. Click Copy Link. 5. Press the CTRL and V simultaneously to paste a copy of the link wherever you want. 15

17 Optimizing Your Connection Putting a lot of big files in your SafeSync folder could slow down your connection to the Internet. If websites seem to open slowly, try adjusting your Trend Micro SafeSync settings. To adjust your settings: 1. Sign into Trend Micro SafeSync. 2. Right-click the Trend Micro SafeSync icon in the Windows system tray and choose Settings. 3. Click Connection on the left side of the window that opens. 4. Move the slider towards Browse Faster or Sync Faster. 5. Click Save. Moving the slider towards Sync Faster makes SafeSync update your files faster, but could make websites take longer to load, especially if you have a slow Internet connection. Selecting Browse Faster meanssafesync has a limited effect on how rapidly websites open, but your files may take longer to update online, especially if you have a slow Internet connection. 17

18 Enabling Java on Your Computers You must enable Java to use some Trend Micro SafeSync features. To enable Java on your computer: Different computers may require slightly different steps. 1. Open the official Java page. 2. Click the link to download and save Java on your computer. 3. Close any other open programs, and then double-click the saved file. 4. Follow the instructions shown to install Java. 18

19 Troubleshooting Java Issues If a message asks you to install Java, try the following suggestions: Windows Mac Close all open web browsers, and then reopen Trend Micro SafeSync. Install the latest version of Java on your computer. You can get it for free by visiting If you still have trouble after installing Java: 1. Open your Web browser and click Internet Options. 2. Go to the Advanced tab and scroll down to Java (Sun). Make sure a check mark appears beside the Java applet. 3. Close and then reopen your web browser. The message requesting for access to your Mac (with regards to SafeSync) may keep appearing if you run version of Mac OSX. Follow these steps to fix the problem: 1. Go to Applications > Utilities > Java Preferences.app. 2. Click the Advanced tab. 3. Under Java console, enable Hide console. 4. Click Save. 19

20 Configuring Proxy Settings Many businesses and schools connect you to the Internet through a "proxy server," a computer that accelerates or filters communications between you and the Internet. Your home computer probably does not use a proxy server, but Trend Micro SafeSync can automatically detect the proxy server addresses of a home network or Internet Service Provider. If you use a proxy server to access the Internet, and Internet Explorer does not store the correct proxy server settings, then you must enter the proxy server's name or IP address and port number yourself. Contact the network administrator of your school or office to obtain the correct proxy server information. To configure the proxy settings: 1. Sign into Trend Micro SafeSync. 2. Right-click the Trend Micro SafeSync system tray icon and select Settings. 3. In the next window that opens, click the Proxy tab. 4. Type the proxy server information into the appropriate fields. 5. Click OK. 20

21 Uninstalling Trend Micro SafeSync How you remove Trend Micro SafeSync from your computer depends on your operating system. Windows XP 1. Click the Windows Start button, select All Programs from the list that appears, then click Trend Micro SafeSync, and finally choose Uninstall Trend Micro SafeSync. 2. Follow the instructions shown, and restart the computer when asked. If the procedure above does not work, click the Windows Start button, select Control Panel from the list that appears, click Add/Remove Programs, choose Trend Micro SafeSync, then click Remove. Restart the computer when asked. Windows Vista or Windows 7 1. Click the Windows button in the bottom left corner of your desktop, select Programs from the list that appears, then click Trend Micro SafeSync, and finally choose Uninstall Trend Micro SafeSync. 2. Follow the instructions shown, and restart the computer when asked. If the procedure above does not work, click the Windows orb, select Control Panel from the list that appears, click Uninstall a Program, choose Trend Micro SafeSync, then click Uninstall. 22 Uninstalling Trend Micro SafeSync from a Mac If you encounter any issues, you can remove Trend Micro SafeSync from your Mac. To remove Trend Micro SafeSync from your Mac: 1. Click the Trend Micro SafeSync icon on the Finder bar, then select Quit. 2. Open your hard drive, then double-click the Applications folder. 3. Look for Trend Micro SafeSync, then drag and drop it in the Trash. 4. Type your password in the appropriate field, then click OK.
