4 Executive Summary Trend Micro SafeSync is a cloud-based solution that keeps digital files backed up, synchronized, and secure across all your devices. SafeSync allows you and your digital files to move easily between PC, Mac, ios and Android. You can stream music and video to your smartphone, share photos with friends on your tablet, or just play it safe and keep secure backups of your most important memories on all your devices. Trend Micro thinks the world is easier and less stressful when you can get access to your files without having to guess which device they re stored on. SafeSync works where you want it to, backing up and syncing files between your computers and mobile devices. Developed and operated by Trend Micro - an industry leader with 20+ years of Internet security expertise - SafeSync keeps all your important data secure. With SafeSync you ll never lose photos, videos, or other valuable files again. Simple to set up and easy to use, SafeSync works silently in the background, automatically providing backup and access to all of your files, on any device, in the event of a disaster, accident, or loss. SafeSync users can login to the web console and have access to all their files from the lost device. Features include the SafeSync Folder providing a drag and drop sync function for all your devices. Put a file in the SafeSync Folder and have it available on all your devices. 12 Chapter 2: Getting Started with SafeSync This chapter gets you started with Trend Micro SafeSync. Topics discussed in this chapter include Quick Start Signing Up for a Trial SafeSync Account Verifying Your Account Quick Start Trend Micro SafeSync is an online synchronization and backup service that requires you to set up an account. Once you do, you can download and install the SafeSync Client and configure it to automatically synchronize and back up your files and folders with their twin in your online account. You can then manage your online folders and files using the SafeSync Web Console. Signing Up for a Trial SafeSync Account To sign up for a Trial SafeSync account: 1. Click The Trend Micro SafeSync landing page appears. Figure 4. SafeSync Landing Page 2. Click 30-Day Free Trial to go to the Signup page. The Signup page appears. 12

Fill out the form to try SafeSync free for 30 days, then obtain the Trend Micro License Agreement by clicking the hotlink and downloading the agreement for SafeSync. 4. After reading the agreement, if you agree check I have read and agree to the Trend Micro License Agreement and click Next. Your account is created and Start Now window is displayed. Figure 6. Start Now 5. To get started with SafeSync, click Start Now. A Download and Install Trend Micro SafeSync webpage appears where you can download and install the Trend Micro SafeSync client. 13

14 Downloading and Installing the SafeSync Client To Download and Install the SafeSync Client: Figure 7. Download Trend Micro SafeSync 1. Click the Download Now button to download the SafeSync Client, or click the hotlink for the version you wish to install (Windows or Mac OS X version). In Windows, using Internet Explorer 9, a File Download dialog appears at the bottom of the browser. 14

15 Figure 8. File Download 2. Click Run. The download proceeds and Windows scans the file for security. When complete, a User Account Control dialog will appear on Windows 7. Figure 9. User Account Control 3. Click Yes to the User Account Control warning to permit the SafeSync Setup Wizard to make changes to your computer. As setup begins, the License Agreement appears. Figure 10. License Agreement 4. Read the License Agreement. If you agree, select Agree and Install. The Installing screen appears. 15

16 Figure 11. Installing 5. When the installation is finished, a dialog notifies you that Windows Explorer will be restarted to complete the installation. Figure 12. Windows Explorer Restart 6. When the restart is finished, a Sign In dialog to Trend Micro SafeSync appears. Figure 13. Sign In to Trend Micro SafeSync 7. Enter the address and password you used to create your account and click Sign In. The wizard continues, welcoming you to Trend Micro SafeSync and explaining how to use your SafeSync Folder. 16

17 Figure 14. Welcome to Trend Micro SafeSync 8. Click Next to continue. SafeSync setup wizard explains how to make any folder a SafeSync Folder by right-clicking it. 9. When the popup appears, select Trend Micro SafeSync > Make This a SafeSync Folder and when the SafeSync Console appears, pair it with an online folder. Figure 15. Make Any Folder a SafeSync Folder 10. Click Next to continue. The introduction continues, explaining how to share files by providing SafeSync links to those you wish to share them with. Figure 16. 18 11. Click Next to page through the screens. SafeSync reminds you that it s also available on ios and Android mobile devices for those who want to go totally mobile. Figure 17. Go Totally Mobile 12. During this introduction, SafeSync has created the SafeSync Folder and made it available through your Windows Explorer Favorites. In Windows, it also places a Trend Micro SafeSync Files shortcut on your Desktop; you can use it or simply double-click the SafeSync icon in the System Tray to open the SafeSync Folder. 13. If this is the first time you re using SafeSync, your SafeSync Folder will be empty. If you re upgrading from an earlier version of SafeSync, it will be populated by your synchronized folders. These are cached in the SafeSync Folder on every computer where SafeSync is installed. Figure 18. SafeSync Folder 14. Simply drag and drop new folders and files into your SafeSync Folder to sync them with your cloud storage, or leave folders where they are and right-click them to make them SafeSync folders. Details are given in the following chapter. 18

19 Verifying Your Account Upon signing up for your Trial SafeSync Account, you re ed a verification notice to verify that your account is valid. Figure 19. Verify your now 1. Open the and click Verify your now to verify your account. If your account is valid, an Address Verified webpage appears. Figure 20. Address Verified 2. Close the webpage, or click Go to your Trend Micro SafeSync account to access the SafeSync login page. 19

20 Chapter 3: Overview of the SafeSync Client This chapter provides an overview of the SafeSync Client. Topics discussed in this chapter include: Viewing SafeSync Status in the Client Console Configuring Synchronization Configuring Your Connection About SafeSync Managing Your Account Getting Help Using the Desktop Icons and System Tray Tool/Menu Viewing SafeSync Status in the Client Console The SafeSync Client Console provides you with a variety of tools to view your SafeSync status, configure the folders and files you wish to back up and synchronize, adjust the Client for the speed of your connection, cache backed-up files locally, and configure your updates. To view your SafeSync Status in the SafeSync Client Console: Figure 21. SafeSync System Tray Menu 1. In the System Tray, right-click the Trend Micro SafeSync icon and select Settings; or select Start > Programs > Trend Micro SafeSync > SafeSync Settings. The SafeSync Client Console appears, with the Status screen opened by default. 20

21 Figure 22. SafeSync Status 2. The Status screen provides an overview of your SafeSync usage, as well as other details: Storage Summary. This indicates the amount of space you ve used in your allocation. The bar chart shows how this usage is broken down. Account details. Your Account Name, address, and Subscription expiration date are provided. Hotlinks. You can renew your subscription by click Renew Now. If you have a key, you can enter it by clicking Activate with Key. You can also edit your Trend Micro account by clicking Edit Account, which takes you to your account. Sign Out. Sign out of SafeSync Client Console by clicking this hotlink. Status bar. The Status bar at the bottom tells you if all files are up to date or a sync is still in progress. Configuring Synchronization To configure SafeSync synchronization: 1. In the SafeSync Client Console screen, click Sync to configure what files and folders will be synchronized. The Sync screen appears, with the Sync Editor displayed. Figure 23. Sync & Selective Sync 2. The Sync Editor lets you pair Local Folders with their Online Folders for synchronization, as well as Customize the default SafeSync folder pairs. We call this Selective Sync. You 21

22 can also pair local folders outside of your SafeSync Folder with existing or new online folders. 3. Click Add one now, or Add another folder to the list, to add a new folder for pairing. Step 1 of 2 appears, displays the default folders in Windows Explorer, and asks Which folder should have an online copy? Figure 24. Synchronizing Folders 4. Display subfolders by clicking the arrow to the left of the target folder, then select the folder you wish to pair and click Next. Step 2 of 2 steps appears. You have a few options. Figure 25. For your first option, Create a new online folder is selected by default, and you can use the name of the local folder, or give the online folder a new name by typing it in the field provided. 22

23 Figure 26. Connect to an existing online folder 6. For your second option, select Connect to an existing online folder and select the online folder you wish to pair with the local folder. 7. Click Finish to complete the pairing. The new paired folders appear in the Client Console. Figure 27. A New Synchronized Folder Pair 8. To unlink a previously paired set of folders, simply position the mouse over the link between the folders and click the Stop button. Figure 28. Stop Synchronizing Paired Folders 9. A dialog appears, asking if you are Ready to Stop Syncing those folders. 23

The folders remain on your local disc and in cloud storage, but they are no longer marked for synchronization. 11. Additionally, previously synchronized folders may be unsynchronized in the SafeSync Folder. Click Customize to open the SafeSync Folder. The contents of the SafeSync Folder appear. Figure 30. Customize your SafeSync Folder 12. Uncheck a folder that s been checked for synchronization and click OK. The folders remain on your local disc and in cloud storage, but they are no longer marked for synchronization. Configuring Your Connection The SafeSync Client allows you to determine how much of your internet connection is used to transfer files. To manage your Connection: 1. Right-click the Trend Micro SafeSync icon in the System Tray to open the SafeSync Client Console. 2. Click the Connection tab to configure your connection settings for optimal synchronization. 24

25 Figure 31. Connection Settings 3. Use the slider to choose among the following options: Connection. Sync Faster. This is the default. SafeSync will update your online files more rapidly, but websites might not load so quickly, especially if you have a slow Internet connection. Browse Faster. SafeSync will have a limited affect on how rapidly websites open, but your files may take longer to update online, especially if you have a slow Internet connection. Balanced. SafeSync will balance its performance between the two options. 4. Click the Proxy tab to configure your proxy. Proxy. Automatically detect settings No proxy server Enter the necessary proxy server settings (Proxy IP, Port, User Name, and Password) 5. Click Apply to apply your changes. 25

26 About SafeSync To obtain information about SafeSync: 1. Click the About tab in the SafeSync User Console. The About screen displays. Figure 32. About SafeSync 2. The Trend Micro SafeSync Version number is displayed. Editing Your Account To Edit Your Account: 1. Back in the Status window, click Edit Account to modify your account settings. Figure 33. Choose among the following options: Click Console to access the SafeSync Web Console. Click Buy Now to upgrade your Trial account to a Full account. Click Download to access available downloads, e.g., Trend Micro SafeSync. Edit your address, or click the various Actions and Support links to change your account details or obtain support. 27

In the Help menu, click the various headings to obtain help Getting Started, Working With SafeSync Folders, etc. Using the Desktop and System Tray Tool/Menu To use the SafeSync Desktop Icon: 1. Installing the SafeSync Client on Windows automatically places a Trend Micro SafeSync Files folder icon on your desktop, which you can use to open the SafeSync Folder. Just double-click the folder to open it and the SafeSync Folder displays. Figure 38. SafeSync Desktop Icon 28

29 Figure 39. The SafeSync Folder 2. As noted in the previous sections, the SafeSync installation places the SafeSync Folder within the Windows Favorites tree, accessible through the Desktop. Clicking it opens the SafeSync Folder in the same way as the Desktop icon. 3. As previously noted, SafeSync also places a tool in the System Tray, which you can use to access the SafeSync Status screen and the SafeSync Website, as well as your files, account, configuration data, etc. Simply right-click the icon to open the SafeSync System Tray Menu. The SafeSync System Tray Tool / Menu provides a variety of tools, including access to the SafeSync Folder, the SafeSync website (Browse files online), an indicator of the percentage of Storage used, Settings, Get Help, a Tutorial, a menu item to Pause syncing, a menu item to Sign out, and an item to Exit SafeSync and shut down the client. 5. 30 Chapter 4: Overview of the SafeSync Web Console This chapter provides a brief overview to the SafeSync Web Console. Topics discussed in this chapter include: Accessing the SafeSync Web Console The Web Console User Interface Uploading Folders and Files Using the View and Upload Tool Uploading Folders and Files Using Drag & Drop Upload Managing and Sharing Folders and Files Using the Web Console Using Other SafeSync Tools Accessing the SafeSync Web Console SafeSync provides a Web Console for managing your files and folders in your online storage account. To Access the SafeSync Web Console: 1. To access the SafeSync Web Console, type into your browser. The SafeSync Sign In page appears. Figure 41. SafeSync Sign In 2. Click Sign In. The Sign In page appears. 3. Enter the address and account password you created when you signed up for SafeSync and click Sign In. The SafeSync Web Console appears. 30

31 The Web Console User Interface The SafeSync Web Console provides you with a variety of tools to view and upload your files and to organize them by folders: Figure 42. SafeSync Web Console Use the icons in the Main Menu (described from left to right) to Move Upward in the Folder Tree, Go Home, View by List, View by Icon, Search, and Upload Files. Click Upload Files in the Main Menu to start uploading files from your computer to your Trend Micro SafeSync Website. Click the Hotlinks to variously, Edit your account, View Details, Buy Now, View sign in History, View events history, access the SafeSync Blog, Download the client, Get Help, or Sign Out. Account Information also displays how much space you re using in your Trial Account allocation of 20GB. Click Common Tasks to execute common tasks. This section changes by context. Use the folders on the left in the Folder Tree to browse your files. Your online folders work just like those on your computer. Double-click to open items and drag and drop them to move them. Uploading Folders and Files Using the Upload Tool To Upload Folders or Files Using the Upload Tool: Use the icons in this menu to view folders by list or icon view or to upload folders and files. 1. To upload folders and files one at a time to SafeSync, select the folder in the Folder Tree you wish to upload your file or folder into, then click the Upload Files tool in the Main Menu. The Upload Files dialog appears. 31

32 Figure 43. Upload File 2. Click Add Folder or Add File. A Windows dialog appears, letting you choose a folder or file to upload. Figure 44. Choose File to Upload 3. Select the folder or file and click Open. This loads the folder or file in the uploader. Figure 45. Start Upload 4. Click Start upload to upload the folder file. This uploads the item to your online storage. 32

A dialog appears, indicating you re enabling the Advanced Trend Micro SafeSync features, followed by a Security dialog verifying the digital signature and asking if you want to run the application. Note: Java must already be installed on your computer for the automatic installation to occur. If Java is not installed, you will be prompted in a dialog to install it. Just follow the installation instructions. 33

35 Managing and Sharing Folders and Files in the Web Console SafeSync provides a variety of tools to manage and share your folders and files. 1. Views. Use the Main Menu to modify your view of the folders and files, or move upward through the folder tree. For example, click the List View or Icon View buttons to change from list to icon view and back again, for either folders or files. Or type in part of all of filename to Search for a file. Figure 51. Share a folder or file with friends and collaborators using the Get link to this file icon in the Common Tasks or Action Menu. You may copy a link to a file or folder to place it online, embed it in a webpage, or click the respective icon to share it on FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or send it via , Gmail, Windows Live Mail, or Yahoo Mail. Your browser takes you to the proper social networking site, where you log in to place the link. At any time, you can also disable a link to the file you re sharing. 8. Click Link options to add a password and expiry date to the link, then click Save. 37

41 Chapter 5: Overview of the SafeSync Mobile Apps This chapter provides a brief overview of the SafeSync Mobile applications. Topics discussed in this chapter include: Installing the SafeSync Mobile Apps for ios and Android Example: SafeSync for ios Installing the SafeSync Mobile Apps for ios and Android The Trend Micro SafeSync Mobile Apps provide many of the features and benefits of the SafeSync client for ios and Android mobile devices. SafeSync Mobile functions include Full access to all the folders and files in your SafeSync account Folder and file creation from the mobile device, including uploads to SafeSync Photo display, as well as music and video streaming from your SafeSync account. SafeSync touch tools and settings for managing SafeSync operations on your mobile device. There are two options for downloading and installing the appropriate SafeSync Mobile app. 1. Open your mobile browser and login to your SafeSync account, then link from the SafeSync Web Console Download page to the Android Market or Apple App Store to download and install the SafeSync mobile app. 2. Search in the Android Market or Apple App Store for SafeSync, then download and install the SafeSync mobile app directly from the market or store. (For ios devices, you need a prior active Apple account.) Direct download and install is the easiest method. Once you ve installed and launched the mobile application, you may sign up for a new SafeSync account or log into your existing account. 41

42 Example: SafeSync for ios In this example, we show the ios version of the SafeSync Mobile app, but the Android version is comparable for most functions. 1. Touch the SafeSync app icon in your ipod Touch, iphone, or ipad. The SafeSync splash screen appears. Figure 66. ios SafeSync Splash Screen 2. Touch Sign in to your SafeSync account. The SafeSync Sign In page appears. Figure 67. ios SafeSync Sign In 3. Enter your account user name ( address) and password and touch Sign In. Your SafeSync account opens and displays the folders and files that are synchronized or backed up to your SafeSync online storage. 4. Click folders and files to open them. Files are opened by the appropriate viewer(s) or players installed on your mobile device. Photos may be viewed individually or as a slideshow, and music and videos can be streamed to the device. 42

With some variation, depending on whether you re using the Android or ios version, your tools include the following options:. Folder Icons. Touch the folder icon to open it. File Icons. Touch a file icon to open it. The file is downloaded to the SafeSync cache on your mobile device. Back Arrow. Touch the back arrow in the upper left-hand corner to back up through the folder structure. Upload File. You may upload a file from your mobile device. Touch Select from Library to upload from your existing device library, or touch Capture from Camera to take a new photo or video and then upload it to SafeSync. New (Create) Folder. Touch the Plus icon to create a folder in your SafeSync account. Thumbnails. Touch the Thumbnail icon to change the view from a list to thumbnails and back again. Refresh: Touch the Refresh button to refresh the view. Settings: Touch Settings to change options such as Image Upload Quality (Low, Medium, High), Set Cache Size (10/100/500/1000MBs), Help, About, Sign Out. 43
