2 The TuNur Project Solar Energy Export Project between Tunisia and Europe TuNur consists of a modular Concentrated Solar Power ( CSP ) plant with storage in Southern Tunisia; and dedicated HVDC lines from the site in Tunisia to Europe. Once landed in Europe power can be transported to all other European countries including the UK. TuNur will deliver over 10,000GWh of 100% dispatchable* renewable power per annum to Europe starting from 2018, capable of supplying energy to circa 2.5 million European homes. TuNur is being developed and financed by UK companies Nur Energie Ltd and Low Carbon Ltd alongside Tunisian and Maltese shareholders. *Reliable and stable power i.e. semi base load or base load Phase MW Phase 1 250MW UK-Tunisia Trade and Investment Forum, October

3 TuNur: How does it work? Mirrors reflect solar rays Heliostats (mirrors) track the sun and concentrate direct solar rays atop the central receiver. Power Generation and Transmission The rays heat the molten salt in the receiver. The salt can be stored or used for steam generation at ~550 C. The stored energy can be released in the evening hours or during cloud transients to provide predictable base-load power. Sub-sea HVDC Transmission Electricity is transported from Tunisia, Malta and to Italy through a high voltage DC connector cable with minimal losses (3% per 1,000km). Once landed in Italy power can be transported to any European country. Electrical Transmission throughout Europe The whole European grid is connected so once power lands in Italy it can be sent across Europe without any need for network upgrades or new transmission. Through existing interconnectors power can also arrive in South East UK. Distribution to Europe and the UK TuNur will deliver more than 10,000GWh per annum, equivalent to 2.5 Million UK homes, starting from This disptahcable power can be tailored to meet demand and will be cheaper than many alternatives such as offshore wind, nuclear and others. 5 A Balanced Win-Win Approach Benefits to Tunisia Benefits to Europe (and the UK) Job Creation The TuNur project is expected to create circa. 20,000 direct and indirect jobs in Tunisia and the region. During the operational phase of TuNur, it is expected that circa jobs will be created. Tax and revenues for the Government. Industrial Local Integration Local manufacturers and service providers can fully participate in the supply chain. Tunisian companies have many of the skills and products required for the project. Tunisia can become exporter of CSP systems and industrial components. Energy Security the development of local CSP industry will ensure Tunisia`s long term energy independence. Low Cost Low Carbon Power Imported CSP is cheaper than many low carbon alternatives, including off-shore wind and nuclear. Non-intermittent Power - Imported CSP with thermal storage alleviates the problem of renewable energy intermittency. New Source of Base-load Power - Imported CSP with thermal storage can provide base-load power to replace decommissioned coal and oil-fired power plants and phased-out nuclear power. Increased Energy Security Less reliance on imported fossil fuels and imported nuclear fuel Specialised services and technology transferopportunities for UK and European firms.
