3 The US is under increasingly greater Pressure Availability Demand Environment Solutions Fossil fuel reserves are unable to meet long-term demand, resulting in ever-rising prices for oil and gas. Although the United States holds only 2.4% of the earth s petroleum reserves, it consumes 22.5% of worldwide production, spending approximately $250 million dollars each year on petroleum imports Six billion tons of CO 2 are produced in the US each year, thus making electricy production the single greatest source of industrial air pollution. Renewable energy provides a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel energy sources that is both ecological and economical

15 Various Funding Opportunities exist in the USA The Product Tax Credit (PTC) provides a tax exemption of $0.0215/kWh An alternative is the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which amounts to 30% of the costs Instead of the PTC or the ITC, eligible parties can claim a cash settlement amounting to 30% of costs, provided construction begins by Dec. 31, The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) extends the PTC through 2012 and provides new funding and credit opportunities

16 Texas specific Incentives Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) Provides financial resources to help strengthen the state s economy. The fund is used as a final incentive tool when a single Texas site is competing with another viable out-of-state option. Texas Emerging Technology Fund (TETF) Provides Texas with an advantage in the research, development, and commercialization of emerging technologies. Solar and Wind Energy Device Franchise Tax Deduction Texas allows a corporation or other entity subject to state franchise tax to deduct the cost of a solar or wind energy device from the franchise tax. Solar and Wind Energy Business Franchise Tax Exemption Companies in Texas engaged solely in the business of manufacturing, selling, or installing solar or wind energy devices are exempted from the franchise tax.

17 Low Production costs make Wind Energy Profitable Production costs per kwh fall between $0.03 and $0.07 per kwh in the US (minus PTC of $ per kwh) The electricity rate for industrial consumers averages $0.067 per kwh and $0.116 per kwh for end consumers

22 Offshore Wind Installations remain a Distant Goal Offshore wind fields have a potential capacity of 900,000 MW Offshore construction isn t available in the US yet; the only project underway, currently in New York, has been postponed Nevertheless, measurement planning has already been begun in many locations around the country, including Texas and New York A giant project in the Gulf of Mexico has been submitted by Pavilion Energy Resources. This project, referred to as the Texas Coastal Clean Power Project, includes five wind farms with capacities of 10,000 MW each.

25 Present Situation Despite a still-recovering economic situation, the US market still exceeded expectations by achieving growth of 5,115 MW Overall, the market grew by more than 14% (compared to 6% in Germany) The US represents the second largest cumulative market in the world with an installation capacity of more than 40,180 MW States are increasingly adapting to wind energy specific requirements, encouraging the growth trend even more strongly In the long-term, the US market is expected to expand even further

26 Prospects After a relatively weak, 2011 will be a year of booming growth The stimulus package is supporting a strong growth trend New instatllions are expected in 2011 that will produce up to 10 GW Despite the economic downturn, investments in electricty plants and grid networks will make 305 GW a positive impact on 2011 Through returned liquidity, many projects put on hold during the recession will be reimplemented Total Capacity of 305 GW by 2030 is a realistic expectation
