1 The future of the vehicle technologies Starting with 2012, the new EU regulations regarding the CO2 emissions at the vehicles at 130 g/km come into force; these requirements generate also other increased requirements for car batteries. To fulfill these new CO2 emissions requirements, it is not enough to intervene in the engine management, but especially an innovation batteries technology. Due to this reason the issue hybrid is more up-to-date actual as ever. The term hybrid is used by the automotive producers to emphasize the ecologic aspect of the vehicles. There are different hybrid types: Hybrid micro (Start-Stop), hybrid mild and hybrid full. Among these future technologies, Start- Stop will have an increasingly importance. The Start-Stop car percentage in Europe will reach 70% in 2015 according to all forecasts. It is recommended to get prepared in time: with EFB and AGM VRLA batteries. Note: *130g/km through engine technology and a supplementary 10g CO2/k reduction through other components (bio fuel, optimized tires). For 2020 it has been established a target of 95g CO2/km. Currently 2,8 car millions are equipped with Start-Stop systems and by the year 2015 their number will increase with 30 million. In other words : the new cars equipped with Start-Stop systems will increase until 2015 to 70%!

2 Start Stop technology Due to Start-Stop technology, the requirements that the battery must accomplish are much higher. It is the heart of the Start-Stop system. The battery manufacturers have at their disposal two technologies for innovative batteries: AGM VRLA with AGM technology for vehicles with recuperation of the energy from braking and other innovative additional technologies for fuel saving. EFB with EFB technology required for vehicles with Start-Stop basis function. Important indication: For vehicles with Start-Stop technologies there are always special Start-Stop batteries required. A conventional battery does not affect only the Start-Stop functions and has negative ecological implications, but influences the battery life itself. The test has proven that a conventional lead-acid battery installed on a vehicle with Start-Stop system loses 7-16% from the loading capacity available, in only one week. START-STOP. BASIC PRINCIPLE. Start-Stop system can be done by using more technologies that have the same effects: CO2 emission and fuel reduction. The basic function represents for instance the decoupling of the engine at the red light of the traffic light or when the traffic is blocked. Through this the fuel consumption and the CO2 emissions is being reduced. The battery takes over the supplying of the electrical consumers, like: air conditioning installation, radio or navigation system. The conceived battery for the Start-Stop standard function is the EFB battery.

3 Start Stop technology START The battery starts the vehicle. ENGINE STOP AND STARTING The driver stops the vehicle, for instance at a red light or when the traffic is blocked and removes from speed, the system decouples the engine. Through this the fuel consumption and CO2 emission is reduced. Battery requirements : The battery takes over alone the supplying of the electrical consumers like : air conditioning installation, radio or naviagtion system. So the engine works only then when it is truly necessary. DRIVING CONTINUING When the driver presses the clutch pedal, the engine starts again automatically. Battery requirements : The battery must have enough energy to be able to start again the engine.

4 Start-Stop Plus When the Start-Stop technology is used in combination with other systems (for instance : regenerative braking, very sophisticated energy system management) the battery requirements are increasing. Here is required the AGM VRLA with AGM technology. ACCELERATING AND CIRCULATION A sophisticated battery management system decouples the alternator while accelerating and normal circulating. In this way the wheels have more power at their disposal, what determines a fuel saving. The alternator is coupled again when the battery voltage has reached a minimal limit. Battery requirements: The battery charges and discharges and must supply by itself all the electrical consumers. BRAKING When recuperating the braking energy, the movement energy of the vehicle is converted in electrical energy which is stored in the battery again. Battery requirements: The battery must be fast rechargeable and to dispose of enough supplementary energy Therefore it must function in a reduced state of charge. STOP + STOPPED ENGINE The vehicle stops and the Start-Stop system decouples the engine. Battery requirements: The battery must have enough energy at disposal, even in the lowest state of charge.

5 AGM-VRLA Battery AGM VRLA WITH AGM TEHNOLOGY AGM VRLA is the solution for vehicles with extended Start-Stop technique with regenerative brake and other supplementary fuel saving technologies. Only the AGM VRLA batteries with AGM technology special designed in this way can resist to these requirements. 6 AGM-VRLA Battery construction AGM means Absorbent Glass Mat - An improvement of the lead technology which contains the absorbant micro fiber glass; that is, the electrolyte is stable incorporated in this micro fibre glass. Due to high pressure force of the plates set, the micro fibre glass joins uniformely and tight on the plates. The active mass loss (the paste) is reduced in this way to minimum. This technology does not allow the acid stratification, which is the main batteries claims source for the vechicles that work in hard conditions. 7 EFB battery EFB BATTERY MAIN ADVANTAGES: The EFB Battery with EFB technology is perfectly corelated to the standard Start-Stop function. When the engine is decoupled, it supplies in a reliable manner the electrical consumers and assures the restarting of the engine in a split of second. Besides these characteristics, it has double cycles resistance compared with the conventional batteries and can be more deeply discharged, without losing its functionality.
