6 START-STOP: A NEW ERA IN BATTERY TECHNOLOGY. Everyone s talking about protecting our climate and reducing CO 2 emissions topics that present the car industry with enormous challenges. From 22, new EU regulations will not only reduce maximum levels of vehicle CO 2 emissions across Europe to 3 g/km, but will also increase the demands on vehicle batteries. That s because meeting this target is going to take more than just improved engine management innovative battery technologies are absolutely key. This makes the issue of hybrid technology more relevant than ever before. Car manufactures use the term hybrid to emphasise the eco-friendly characteristics of their vehicles. There are various types of hybrid technology such as micro hybrid (Start-Stop), mild hybrid and full hybrid. Of these, Start-Stop is set to become the most important. Start-Stop vehicles are forecast to represent 7 % of all vehicles produced in Europe by 25. The short-term storage temperature must not exceed 25 C. Batteries should be sold according to the first-in, first-out principle. Therefore, they are helpfully colour coded according to the date of manufacture (please see colour coding table). Guidelines for installation and possible recharging. Installation The battery should be installed in the customer s vehicle no later than a total of 5 months from the date of manufacture (please see colour coding table). The terminal voltage should be greater than 2.2 V. 2. Recharging The battery needs to be recharged when the terminal voltage has fallen below 2.5 V due to extended storage periods. When recharging the battery, you must observe all relevant safety regulations (especially the requirement to wear safety glasses) and carry out the work in a sufficiently ventilated room. 2. Checking the terminal voltage The terminal voltage should be checked two to four quarters after the date of manufacture. If the terminal voltage has dropped below 2.5 V, the battery needs to be recharged to between 2.7 and 2.8 V before being stored further. 2.2 Measuring the terminal voltage The terminal voltage is to be measured with a digital multimeter ( mv resolution) at a room temperature of approximately 2 C. 2.3 Recharging recommendations Should the terminal voltage drop below 2.5 V, the battery must be recharged. The recommended charge current equates to one tenth of the battery s nominal capacity (e.g. 8 A for a battery with a nominal capacity of 8 Ah). How long the battery needs to be recharged depends on how it s going to be used afterwards. If the battery is going to be installed immediately in a vehicle, a short recharging period is generally sufficient to prepare it for use (i.e. a terminal voltage of between approx. 2.2 and 2.5 V, measured approx. one hour after the recharging period is complete). If the battery is going to be stored for a further period, then a maximum possible state of charge should be reached (see page 2). A 44 Ah battery with a terminal voltage of 2.45 V can be charged to approximately % in 2.7 hours with a recommended charge current of 4.4 A equal to one tenth of the battery s nominal capacity (Uo terminal voltage = 2.8 V). The charging time falls proportionately with the rise in the current the battery can supply (e.g. when the current is doubled to 8.8 A, the charging time is reduced by half to.35 hours). Overcharging is to be avoided at all costs, however, as it leads to permanent battery damage. The terminal voltage should always be measured at least one hour after recharging (please see ). 7

18 MAINTENANCE AND CARE. Installing the battery 4. Charging Once the battery is inside the vehicle, remove the protective cap from the positive terminal and place it on the terminal of the old battery before connecting the terminal connector to avoid short circuits. Clean the terminals and connectors and lightly lubricate with terminal grease. When installing the battery, first connect the positive terminal and ensure that the terminal clamps are fixed firmly in place. Attachment parts such as terminal covers, vent pipe connection holders, elbows, hose connectors, filler caps and terminal holders should be taken from the battery being replaced. Elbows and filler caps are available under the article number if required. Leave at least one gas outlet open. This also applies when transporting the old battery. Ensure the room is well ventilated. Only use suitable direct current chargers. Connect the positive terminal of the battery with the positive connector on the charger and then connect the negative terminal to the negative connector. Do not switch on the charger until the battery is connected and do not switch it off until the battery is charged. We recommend a charge current (amperes) equal to one tenth of the battery s capacity (Ah). Stop the charging process if the acid temperature exceeds 55 C. The battery is fully charged when the specific gravity and charging voltage do not increase for a period of two hours. 2. Getting started The batteries are factory-filled with acid with a specific gravity of.28 g/ml and are charged and ready to go. If there is insufficient starting power, then recharge the battery (see page 4). 3. Storage and transport Please note that the batteries are filled with acid. Store upright in a cool, dry place. Ensure that batteries do not tip during transport. Do not remove the protective cap from the positive terminal. 8

19 5. Maintenance 6. Jump-starting Keep the battery clean and dry. Check the acid level at regular intervals and add distilled water if necessary. If water consumption is high, have the alternator regulator checked.* Do not use any so-called means of improvement. When the specific gravity falls below.2 kg/l, recharge the battery. Should you lose the screwcaps, replace them only with those of the same type. * An important fact about closed batteries Closed batteries are self-contained and lose very little water, so it s neither possible nor necessary to check the specific gravity. Only use jumper cables certified in accordance with the standard and read the instructions carefully. Only use batteries of the same nominal voltage. Switch off both vehicle engines. Firstly, connect both positive terminals. Then connect the negative jumper cable, first to the negative terminal of the feeder vehicle and only then to the negative terminal of the receiving vehicle (please observe the vehicle manufacturer s instructions). Start the engine of the feeder vehicle and then the engine of the receiving vehicle for a maximum of 5 seconds. Disconnect the cables in reverse order. 7. Periods of disuse Charge the battery and store it in a cool, dry place or leave it in the vehicle, making sure to disconnect the negative connectors. Check the state of charge at regular intervals and recharge as necessary (see 4). 9

21 C High rate discharge test Only conduct this test if the specific gravity is even and at least.25 kg/dm 3 ; otherwise charge the battery first. Please ensure you follow the battery tester s instruction manual. Does the high rate discharge test show that the battery is faulty or needs replacing? Yes Replace the battery* No The battery is in good working order For discharge testers with adjustable resistances: test the battery at approximately three times the battery s nominal capacity for around seconds (e.g. a 2 V, 45 Ah battery should be tested with a load current of approx. 35 A). During the test, there should be no significant fluctuations in voltage. D Test the battery with an electronic testing device Please ensure you follow the testing device s instruction manual. The correct low-temperature testing current also known as cold start current or cold cranking amps (CCA) is found on the battery along with the corresponding standard which should then be set on the device itself. N.B. If the low-temperature testing currents are not specified, please note the following: For starter batteries, low-temperature testing current = 5 x K 2, so K 2 = Ah. The current is 5 x = 5 A. For ignition and lights batteries (especially VARTA Gel), 3 x K 5 gives the approximate possible cold start current. If the device only has one setting and it s based on the old German standard, the EU standard current can be used to determine the current of the German standard: current = EN current x.6. If the temperature falls below, it s necessary to compensate accordingly. RESULTS GOOD The battery is fully charged and ready to use. GOOD + RECHARGE Once the battery has been charged, it will be ready to use. CHARGE + RETEST Charge the battery and then repeat the test. If the same message appears after the second test, replace the battery.* REPLACE THE BATTERY The battery is faulty and must be replaced.* TEST NOT POSSIBLE No readings check that the measuring cable is properly connected. The battery may be deeply discharged. Charge the battery and repeat the test. If conducting the test in the vehicle, turn off all electrical devices. NO READINGS DESPITE A PROPER CONNECTION AND PRIOR CHARGING Replace the battery.* General points to remember about testing devices: The device calculates the results good or replace based on the state of charge and the available starting power. It s possible that a battery with 45 % starting power can be rated good and a battery with 75 % starting power as in need of replacement. The starting power represents the difference between the low-temperature testing current entered into the machine and the current that the machine actually measures. It can exceed %. Electronic testing devices are only suitable for batteries that have been in use for a certain period of time. They cannot provide any indication of the performance of new or unused batteries. For this reason, VARTA recommends confirming the nominal figures by conducting the tests as detailed in the EN 5342 standard. * Returning the battery in accordance with the applicable returns procedures and warranty conditions. A WARRANTY REPLACEMENT IS INVALID AS A RESULT OF: a) Normal wear and tear. b) A failure to follow the instruction manual. c) Negligent and improper storage, usage or installation. d) Unauthorised modifications to the battery. e) The use of so-called means of improvement We would especially like to draw your attention to the fact that the period of use, temperatures and the application of the battery play a crucial role in determining whether it attains its maximum service life. Authorising a return should always take place with this in mind. 2
