3 Dear Candidate, Thank you for showing an interest in our advertisement for a new Head Teacher. We hope that the information in this pack will inspire you to apply for this rewarding post. The governors are very proud of our school with its happy, well motivated children, dedicated, inspiring staff, supportive parents and committed governors. Our children are well behaved and eager to learn. In September 2014 Ofsted inspected our school and judged it to be Outstanding. However, the school is committed to constant improvement in standards of teaching, learning and achievement. Our numbers on role have gradually increased to 140 and children come to us from Melton Mowbray and the surrounding villages. This is a popular school. Our school is very much part of the community with strong links with the Pre school, the Church and other organisations. A number of adults from the community volunteer to help in classrooms, give music tuition, sports training, cooking and reading. All are very welcome and their time and efforts greatly appreciated. Our next exciting venture is to join a Multi Academy Trust. This process is in the very early stages and we hope that our new Head Teacher will enthusiastically lead our school forward to embrace the next stage of its journey. 4 Job Description Appointment of Head Teacher Job Description Job Title: Head Teacher NOR: 140 Responsible to : Responsible for: The Governing Body, represented by the Chair All teaching and support staff Job Purpose To provide vision and professional leadership, which secures the success and continuous improvement of the school, ensuring a high quality education for all its pupils. Main duties and responsibilities: 1. To undertake all the duties and responsibilities of the post of Head Teacher, as set out in Part 7 of the School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document. 2. To ensure that high quality education is provided for all children and young people that meets their needs and enables them to make good progress across the school. 3. To be responsible for child protection and the welfare of children and young people, ensuring that rigorous recruitment and vetting procedures are followed and the safety of all children and young people is maintained. 4. To ensure that a Designated Senior person for Child Protection is in post and that person is accountable for all elements of the role (as set out in Keeping Children in Education ). 5. To develop a positive working relationship with parents, governors and the local community, including any schools with whom Great Dalby collaborates. 6. To maintain a keen awareness of developments in education, teaching and learning, to ensure that the school is able to meet current and future requirements and resources are secured.
5 7. To maximise the contribution of all staff, leading by example to develop a performance culture which supports the best possible outcomes for children and young people. 8. To be responsible for the management of staff, including recruitment, selection, induction, deployment, professional development, performance management, attendance and conduct. 9. To ensure that the school operates efficient and effective financial and administrative procedures, setting appropriate priorities for expenditure, allocating funds and ensuring effective financial control, in accordance with the requirements laid down by the Governing Body. 10. To undertake the duties of the job in accordance with the relative legal requirements, including health and safety and employment legislation. 11. 11 Our staff s thoughts. The staff of Great Dalby Primary would like the successful candidate to have strong leadership and management skills and be a committed and effective team player. He or she will have excellent interpersonal skills and be a good listener, valuing the view, opinions and experiences of staff, parents and children. It will be essential that the new Head embraces and leads change, building on established good practice and respecting the culture and ethos of the school. The new Head should have considerable primary experience, preferably through the whole age range, and be a successful practitioner, willing and able to lead by example. The staff require the new Head to be ambitious for continuous improvement and high quality learning for both pupils and staff, with the vision and passion for education to achieve challenging goals. He or she will be personable, enthusiastic, child centred and committed to achieving very high quality learning and teaching within a happy, supportive environment. Above all, the staff would like the new Head to be approachable, respectful of colleagues - and have an excellent sense of humour. The quality of teaching is outstanding. 12 Our village Set in rural Leicestershire, Great Dalby is a small village with a population of approximately 500, located 3 miles south of the market town of Melton Mowbray. The nearest cities are Leicester, 13 miles away and Nottingham, 23 miles. The attractive towns of Stamford and Oakham are also within easy reach. Amenities in the village include the Village Hall which plays host to the Pre School and is used for various events such as whist drives and quizzes. There is a Gardening Club, Table Tennis Club and an active Cricket Club as well as our own Primary School. The Royal Oak public house is situated on the main road through the village. There are two churches, St. Swithin s Church of England and the Methodist Church. Both churches have strong links with the school and host a number of events during the year such as Easter, Harvest and Christmas Festivities. People have lived and farmed in the area for more than two thousand years.
13 Great Dalby Primary School It is thought that there was a settlement here prior to the Norman Conquest and as the name Dalby means Settlement in the Dale it suggests Danish origin. The majority of villagers continued to work on the land until the railway arrived in the 1870 s and a station was built, thus connecting the village to other towns and cities. However, the station and line did not survive Lord Beeching s cuts. The first school was in a house called Town Street. A local benefactor, Thomas Bunney, bequeathed funds to be used to teach village children to read. In 1871 several farmers began to raise money to build a new school room which opened on the present site in The present school has had two recent additions including new offices and staff room and, in 2011, a new two classroom unit for Key Stage 1.
