Oceanology International 2016, Wednesday 16 March 2016, London A Centre for research-based innovation in Exposed Aquaculture Operations - Collaboration and Synergies Between Maritime Industries Within The "Ocean Space" Dr. Arne Fredheim, Research Director Aquaculture Technology, SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture Adjunct Professor, Centre for Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) 1

Food gap challenge towards % increase in food production needed Change in diets Population growth 2006 population population Source: World Resources Institute (2014) Creating a Sustainable Food Future 2

The world need more (sea)food World Bank Report: The world needs more seafood UN panel on climate change: More of the food need to be produced in the ocean Wild catch fisheries is stagnating the increase need to come from aquaculture FAO: Largest potential for in marine aquaculture FAO,

Global marine aquaculture Volume plants and molluscs Value finfish and molluscs 2% Finfish Volume 10% 1% Finfish Value 2% 13% Plants Molluscs 34% 53% Plants 45% 6% 34% Molluscs Aquatic Plants Molluscs Crustaceans Finfish Other Aquatic Plants Molluscs Crustaceans Finfish Other FAO, 2014

Production quantities of the nine largest marine finfish species in the world (FAO 2014) 5

OECD Workshop on Future Prospects of Marine Aquaculture Main challenges and constrains to growth Perception and acceptance Suitable area for farming (fed and non-fed) Technology Regulatory framework for use of sites/area Technology development Farming equipment etc. for available sites Increased effectiveness and industrialization Fish feed (fed) Fish oil - EPA/DHA Fish protein Regulatory framework and predictability National and international Legislations Market 6

Blue blue sector collaboration to increase innovation Technological development will play a major role in future expansion of the aquaculture industry (FAO) Transfer of knowledge, competence and solutions Operations in the wave zone Offshore wind Synergies in collaboration Reliability and operability Risk management and design Challenges and constrain Operational limits for feeding Operational limits for handling, delousing and changing nets Transfer of fish Biological limits Illustration: Ocean Farming/Salmar 7

Marine aquaculture Larger and more advanced Ill: Aqualine Cages: Larger units including auxiallary equipment 1000 tons of salmon ( ) in each cage = 2200 cows From manual to mechanical and automated operations Service vessels: Specialized vessel for maritime aquaculture operations m in length (used to be 14.99) Increased diversification of vessel designs and deck equipment Well boats: New set of operations and new strict rules and requirements Increased capacity 4500 m3 can carry 700 tons of live salmon 8

Evolution rather than revolution Search for more space and stable water conditions Temperate, oxygen, salinity Fewer and larges farms Expanding existing systems towards the open ocean Existing traditional farming equipment for Hs above 3 m Definition - class 1 to 4 Present status Class 3 - Exposed Durations of weather time to operate Reliability and operability

Efforts to develop next generation offshore fish farms Ocean Farming/SalMar Diameter of 110 meter 67 meter high Tested for Hs of 5 meter 8 times volume of a regular large cage Nordlaks 430 meter of length 54 meter wide Capacity of ton Designed for Hs of 10 meter Illustration: Ocean Farming/Salmar

Submergible farming concepts Separate fish and sea lice Avoid the upper 5 10 meter of water column Two separate concepts under development Supplying artificial air Feeding deep Using light ATLANTIS SUBSEA FARMING AS Aqualine AS

Existing HDPE circular cages Proven to withstand high energy environments Mode scale test Scale 1:16 Significant wave height Hs = 4.0 Wave period Tp = 8 Current velocity = 0.7 m/s 12

Significant parts of the Norwegian coast is today unavailable to industrial fish farming due to remoteness and exposure to harsh wind, wave and current conditions. The Exposed Aquaculture Operations Centre will draw upon Norway's strong position in the aquaculture, maritime and offshore sectors to enable safe and sustainable seafood production in exposed coastal and ocean areas.

Why farm at exposed coastal areas? There has been a gradual move towards using more exposed coastal areas Need for more space and less areal conflicts Improved production environment with stable conditions and greater dispersal of wastes Located at a greater distance to wild salmonids in coastal waters Photo: Kartverket

Challenges and needs Regular as well as infrequent operations are challenging. Postponed operations due to weather: Transport of fish Treatment of fish Daily inspections Removal of dead fish Sites have been abandoned due to difficulties to perform key operations farm production must be sustained under all conditions Photo: Salmar Technological innovations (such as more autonomous systems, offshore structures and vessels) are needed to enable safer, more controlled and reliable operations Thorvaldsen, Trine, Ingunn M. Holmen, and Helene K. Moe. "The escape of fish from Norwegian fish farms: Causes, risks and the influence of organisational aspects." Marine Policy 55 (2015): Photo: SINTEF

A long-term alliance between industrial and research partners

6 Research areas

Research methodology Field experiments Complex and realistic

Exposed aquaculture operations are demanding and require larger capital investments can play a key role in unlocking the potential for blue growth and increased food production have a lot in common with other maritime operations. Blue - blue sector collaboration to increase innovation are special fish welfare must be ensured in all operations and conditions has an international potential, both in terms of research, production and technology and we will seek to build a collaborative platform based on the EXPOSED Centre Photo: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
