The motivation for use of recirculation during this period was connected to the possibility of rearing 1-year old smolts by using heating water. Heating was used from first-feeding and until the fish was about 10 grams. In Norway in 1980, about 9.3 mill. smolts of salmon and trout were produced from 81 active farming licences; on average smolts per licence. After the introduction of the heat pump for heating water for first-feeding, all recycle systems in Norway was removed! 3

7 This article describes among other things what progress has been achieved in regard to technology in cold water recycle systems, and why it is possible today to call such systems effective and predictable: - Correct design of tanks and piping (e.g. self-cleaning) - High flow rate through the tanks and low water retention time - Micro screens with high capacity - More efficient degassing - Better oxygen control - Strategies for ozone with or without UV Not described in this paper: biofilter designs Feed quality Selective breeding 7

How will it be possible to produce this amount of smolts in Norway? 8

11 Status today (feb 08) regarding production of smolts of trout and salmon in recycle systems In Norway - About 9 sites are using recycling in production of smolts of trout or salmon - 2 sites have recycling as the sole method of production - 7 sites use recycling for part of their production Many projects are in the pipeline! - Estimated production capacity in systems using recycling per Feb. 08: ca 5 mill. smolts per year Less than 3% of total production volume in Norway 11
